Excellent

That is what the mental mobility is. Excellent Sandeep and thanks for posting it. It is purely this reason that these people top the examination or make it to the top.

These are "smart arse" answers, that have little or no reflection
on your mental agility...people who resort to such answers
for the most part would be termed as jokers. These are plays
on words that do not require a genius.

Try these sort of answers in a managment consulting interview.
You'd be shown the door pretty quickly.

And, oh by the way, if you are looking for people infinitely capable of
such presence of mind, you should take a look in our rural area. The
"taas" playing Rundu Khundus are highly skillful at these sort of
retorts. Try getting a straight answer from them.

Those guys and then there are the stand up comedians.

[
For the rest of us who are more interested in professional and private work
environments rather than licking the tushees of corrupt politicians and
seniors, please don't try these answers in interviews or even
post interview dinner etc.

You are quite right Bhateeje to large extent and that reminds me of two real jokes..

1. Ek tau upne ghar ke saame leta huaa thaa.

Kuch gauman me to log seedha jaba dette hi nahi. I know for sure some such villages.

Right Chacha ! These guys can frustrate the heck out of the best !

Colonel Chacha said that this "mental mobility" is what gets these folks
to the top. He he he. I almost laughed off my fake mustache on hearing that.

It is not this mental agility for "smart arse" answers that gets them to the
top. But it is their incessant ability to say "Haan Ji, jo hukam !" that gets
them to the top. Just like those officers who were saying "Haan Ji",
when apne CM Hooda sahib was telling them to get into action.

Rathee mate- Take a chill pill!

Well these answers are quick-witted and no way a sensible man would term these people 'jokers'.

It takes a hell lot of alacrity to play with words, try doing it when you have a whole interview panel staring right in your eyes.

I wonder what would be your ans to some of these questions.
Go on! give it a shot MR. Non Smart Arse.

It's funny when you call the CM ( apne CM Hooda sahib ) and Class 1 officers to be incessant ability people.

Haanji ki naukri and Naaji ka ghar, ye kahawat to suni hi hogi.

Seems like these guys frustrated the heck out of you for sure 'Mr. Best'

Theek sae bhai/beta (jo bhi tunnae aacha laagae). Milte rehna,
err apne experieces bhi batate rehna. We are all here to learn.
I told you like I have seen it. Others can tell how they have
seen it or will see it. We are here to learn from each other.

There was a time when I too thought that these were cool answers
and the perfect way to handle ones in an interview. But experience
often slaps us around until we learn the hard way.

Now when I am sitting on the other side of the table I am able to
look at all this with a completley different perspective.

Well I completely disagree here. Aisa response dene sae chalte
purze nahin hote. Like I said you can get plenty of such "witty" answers
from all the Rundu Khundus.

Ideally what we need in those positions are problem solvers and administrators. This is no different from what you need in any private
enterprise.

Practically what happens over there is the "yes man" are the ones
who do well. And to be a "yes man" what you need to be proficient
at is the ability to more often than not come up with the "Ji
Haan, Jaisa aap kahen" answer.

In neither case do the "smart arse" answers display ones ability to
do well.

Self Obsession: And You Miss the Bus

I am amazed, how sentimental are we about what we write and what reply we get from other members. While these answers may look stupid to some members, to me it is presence of mind and very much needed for the people who are going to become IAS, IPS officers. When you are dealing with public, there would be numerious occassions when you come across such situations and thus need smart answers to come out of it. If you analyzed these questions and answers, the answers given are more positive. It also shows the character of the person who is answering these questions as to how is he likely to react in difficult situations. Would he bogged down or would he think widely to find a solution to the problem. The people selected for IAS, IPS are required to find the solutions to the difficult problems. If these officers get corrupted in the system UPSC is least to be blamed.

That is the difference in doing a job where study of human behavior is more important rather than solving a computer programming problem, for human behaviour does not follow a set piece pattern. I would like to hire people giving me such answers rather than person who is obsessed only by 2+2=4.
Such answers clearly show the presence of mind, mental mobility and wider view point and clearly needed in people who should be leading.

Well, Colonel Chacha, I just don't agree that these questions and answers
correlate in any way to desired qualities for such positions. But convincing
anyone one way or the other would probably be a futile excercise...I don't
think psychologists would have an answer either.

But that said, the most important aspect of any interview is pretty obvious.
You want to give the answers that the interview panel wants to hear,
whether or not it is the right/best one. All said and done, those folks
on the other side of the table are the ones who will make the decision
about you, and they are as human as anyone else. If you have Rundu
Khundus on the other side, then the Rundu-Khundu answers is what one
should give.

So if UPSC is expecting "smart arse" answers, then that is what they
ought to get. That is the bottom line.

Hmmm...Now makes me think. I've spent most of my growing up years
amongst IFS people. Perhaps all this can explain all the odd balls I have
seen....
