As far the caste system is concerned it was not suppose to be that way, during vedic times people were given the choice to do whatever work they wanted to do hence the metaphor of Varna was introduced but later on as our old values and system went in free fall decline the metaphor became the nomenclature of caste system. Dear Vipin, I know people from India, who are working at top level positions in Aussie companies..There is no discrimination as such..As long as you are skilled enough and serving to the business, no one is there to stop you..

Most of Indian taxi drivers do not have good communication skills..they are not proficient in English. On a telephone call to police, they cannot even explain the location from where they are calling..Then what you can expect from the police..I am sure some of them would not have a clue of what number to call in an Emergency...

Look i do not feel unsafe here..Never had any issues as such..So many times i came late home from the city...But yes i admit that in last couple of years,thug infested Melbourne has experienced a crime rate more than ever..But the police presence has increased as well.

Could you name a few of those working at senior post. I know you wont because there are not. Leave alone senior position how many Indians are even finance manager( which is like a middle manager) despite the fact that lot of indians are CPAs or CAs.

OK taxi drivers dont know english???? They dont know which no to call??? You must be joking ? I am sure a lot of taxi drivers speak as good as you do. I can pass you a few numbers of those drivers and you can find yourself.

A taxi driver cant explain the location is the joke of the day.

Only a few cant speak good english but they are the new drivers who recently arrived in Australia and they wont be driving taxis for long.

Well, I think ppl here forgetting the real motive behind the thread? As the title says- 'Racism, Safety and Wayout!' I think Samar wanted to ask ppl living abroad what are the safety measures and Wayouts!

Although I never been abroad but I strongly believe Racism is everywhere be it India or any country thou the % of such ill-thinking ppl would be really less but you can't deny it. The other thing I believe plenty of Indians are timid n' hv inferiority complex in general (exclude Jats) therefore if they don't get selected for job or other thing they tend to feel they're being discriminated due to their color or 3rd world country etc.

Anways, JL members living abroad for long should provide some useful info and advice about security measures and way outs, then only motive and essence of the very thread will be fulfilled.

My friend who usually supports India blindly was travelling in the train yest.
there is a newspaper MX available for free,so nearly everyone reads it in train,specially during peak hours
So when she was coming home yest, there was a headline about India not prepared well for Comm Games and had depicted very young children, emaciated and anorexic, doing the labour.
So, she sitting in the train, was very upset what inference it wud have for the other Ausises and everyone else in train.,,
Came home, she told me about the embarassment.
unfortunately, the same paper today,coming bk home, there was this headline of that douchebag setting his car on fire for financial gain.(it was not a twisted, inflammatory report, but quite balanced)
She was mortified n came rushin to me embarrased..loooooooooooooook...haha

n now we think,even if there are genuine assaults on Indians, not many people will rely.

There is something called credit history.. I hope we all know that.. All contract phones are given to people after checking their credit history. It takes more than year to build credit history to take these phone contracts.Venki is an American citizen and just came to UK for educational program.. It means he doesn't have credit history in UK. Then how come you'll give him 35K Iphone???

There is nothing wrong on O2 part... People just want to ride this wave racism...

Now based on various posters contribution and other sources, here are some safety measures, guidelines to encounter the racial distasteful situations arising at any country.

1.Travelling: - This a is serious caveat ; do not travel in trains after 9pm. Even if you do, choose to stay in a group. While coming back from through public transport such a Train, Always choose to stand, sit in driver’s/Guard’s cabin. However buses are safer to travel and work. Much better is to own a second hand car. This would cut all the possibly threats of attacks. Watch out your budget and make a serious note to own a second hand car.

2.Communication: Avoid being loud in native language at public places. This spur the anger in locals and taken as rude. Put your gadgets off while travelling in public place. Mind it showing off your gadgets attracts wrong kind of people. Make social network out side Indian, it would help to improve your communication in an English speaking country.

3.Accommodation: Use a bit of commonsense while you start living in any area.Usualy cheapest suburbs is not safest ones. In Melbourne, avoid suburbs like Hoppers Crossing, Werribee, Frankston, Broad Meadows and Springvale .Choose average or above average localities to settle. Also avoid renting in the area which have mostly pubs and bars.

4.Acting in trouble: Don’t panic. If danger is imminent run and pull the door handles of all the cars nearby. Mostly the cars in Australia have security alarm. The pulling of the car handles triggers the alarm and its alerts the neighbourhood thus dissuading the attacker. Also keep Emergency number 000 in Speed dialling mode in your cell phone. This helps. Be careful when and how you retaliate. It is alright if you are protecting yourself and inflict somebody a blow in self defence. But make sure, you don't make the first move. In Australia, even a thief or anti-social criminal can take you to court. Anyone can afford a public lawyer and sue you and get you prosecuted. So you have to be careful in your actions and make sure you don't give the first blow. Police will not do nothing unless you can identify the attackers, which is rarely possible because most of them look the same. Noting down car numbers is a good habit as it can lead to arrest of culprits.

5.Indian Associations: Keep in touch Indian associations like Jat Association [if there is], Punjabi Association, Bengali, Gujarati or any Indian group.Check out with local Jat chapters in particular country.

6.Avoid argument: Remember it’s not our country, so better to brush off any racial comment, argument.

Hopefully these books will help you get over your inferiority complex and puberty. Life is not easy boy, you have to stand up and be counted among men if you want to succeed in this world or keep riding the cottails of others. Training to become men begins early on, guess you missed that class, its time for you to attend that paathshaala where boys become men.
