Railway Goods Freight and Passenger Fares Raised

Railways had announced on May 16, 2014 and then put on hold the increase of 14.2 percent passenger fare in all classes and freight charge hiked by 6.5.

The NDA Government has decided to implement the same today. The hike will be effective from 25th June, 2014.

This is a big hike in one go on the eve of the starting of Budget Session of the Parliament. It would be interesting to see what would be the impact of this step on the inflationary trend presently prevailing in the market.

If it results in further increase in the prices rise, it may cause delay the onset of much publicised good days for the people - 'Achchhe Din Aane wale Hain' !

Railways is in poor condition due to antics of upa and mamta. They did not hike fares and kept on piling debts on railways. It is their incompetence which had led railways in this situation. For all Modi haters, this hike was approved by khangress govt but stopped from implementation due to their vested interests. On one side you support removal of subsidy, on another side cry of inflation. Why was inflation not counted in by upa during their regime while deciding no fare hikes??

I am agree here ! Railway Department is poor. Budget pass hota hai 25000 cr ka or lagte hai 5000-6000 cr. Question is here ! How BJP will handle this department?

Train fare for 100 km journey from Shamli to Delhi was Rs 20.00. Don't you all think this is ridiculously low. Train fares have to be reasonable, else we will continue with third rate railway infrastructure.

don't you think 5000-6000/month is too less for a labor worker. There are too many things which are ridiculously low.

the hike of train fare is not good for all societies because due to this the all items price will be increased.the BJP had promised for "Achchhe Din aane wale hain " and when congress party had to be increased the fare then BJP shouting against hike of fare and today they are supporting it that is unjustice to the people of India.

Train fare in local EMU is rs 5-10 from faridabad to delhi while DTC/Hrayana roadways charges rs 25-40 . there is no other option left for railways besides increasing fares to have surpuls amount needed on its infrastructure.

We Indian have grown so addicted to freebies that we consider it an usurpation of our 'birth-right' of freebies if any move like fare and freight hike is made. It hurts us. It does NOT matter if substandard services are provided. We give a damn to such an idea if it costs us. We deem it a trespass if reforms are to be made and in return we are to pay for them. Indeed time has come when we need to change our attitude. Let us keep vigil eye for the outcome of fare and freight charge hike.

these price don't effect middle or upper class.
What about a lower class who is travelling every day in train, most of duty worker.

even transportation rent also increase, it's mean things also gonna be expensive.

i used to study in Perth, Australia. There was a ticket $1.80. It was valid for 2 hours. You could travel as much as you can do in 2 hours in transperth buses and metro.

Average per capita in Australia $40,000
while in India just $1000-$1500

In any case, Welfare Governments normally keep fare high enough to keep the services running smoothly and efficiently. Their idea is if fare need to be subsidised for poors or elderly do it through other means or provide them with concession cards.

The fare no doubt need to be increased to keep the railways running but alone fare increase isn't the solution. Lot of people evade fairs in India and majority of them can afford the fare. We need to fix this as well. Another thing to keep in mind is that if they make railways administration private the fare would be much higher.

Normally Govt in India don't take unpopular measures. This Govt has done it. Lets see it they deliver as well.

If the facilities at the Railway stations are increased, renovation of railways is taken up, people will soon forget the hike. But, would it be done, is the moot question !

But people think that railway rent does not effect people or still rent is too low. But I felt for lower class it's still too much.

I like your idea about concession card. it's really can work.

The increase in Railway fares was long overdue. Owing to vote bank politics, the successive governments have been pushing the matter under carpet and whatever little increase effected in the past has never been adequate enough to meet the expenditure towards innovation and improvement in the quality of services and up-gradation of infrastructure. If the government is able to bring some tangible changes for the better by increasing the fares, the action is justifiable. A precarious balance needs to be struck between progress and populism and some of the sops may have to be mercilessly scrapped in the broader and long-term interest of the country. New government needs sufficient time and peaceful atmosphere to be able to deliver. The over-reaction by some opposition parties is immature and rhetorical. An improved railway can help reduce excessive use of private vehicles which is becoming a nightmare for Indian economy and an environmental hazard.
