Why does every Jat have the last name Singh? We have a gotra then we have Singh?
Why did we adopt/have the name Singh added to us?
Thanks

That is not true. There are a lot of Jats (may be in majority) who do not add Singh (which means lion and king of jungle) to their names. Ths trend is only common in some parts of Jatland.

i hardly remember that any one in my family has last name singh:rolleyes:. to know my dad middle name has singh. capt ravinder singh rana. but not last:rolleyes:

Hindu jats dun use Singh as last name.. its more like a middle name. In my family every one uses Singh except cpl of cousins.

my frn mandeep singh sodhi is sardar, singh to jiss ke mann mein aaye woh hi use kar le....................
same with verma it is also in use at large scale

Trend of using "SINGH" as lastname is more comman among RAJPUTS.
JATS also use singh, but not so common as RAJPUTS. the young generation of JAT has almost completely ignored "SINGH" & prefer to use their GOTRA or "kumar".

Kamal Hai Bhai!!!!

Are bhai ye sochiye ki baaki log kyo SINGH surname use karne lage, JATon ka to hai hi..

Why other use it?

This is only for JATS.

Bye

CHAUDHARY RAHUL SINGH

I have read this thread only today. Among us, perhaps there is no hard and fast rule of using 'Singh' like in Sikhs. But it is well said : "ALL SARDARS ARE SINGHS - BUT ALL SINGHS ARE NOT SARDARS" (Like Charan Singh and so on). My younger brother writes only this name : Dharampal Singh.

Humor:

Ek Tau ney ek chhohre se poocha : Tera ke naam sey?

Chhora bolya : Satbir SINGH.

Tau : 'Singh' Kachche ya pakke ?

Chhohra : Pakke

Tau : Bhai, pher tu iss gaam mey ke karei sei? Pakke singh tey jungle mey honn sein. !!!

...Singh (as already been pointed out means: Lion). just like Ajit used to say,"Mona Darling, saara sheher mughe 'loin' kae naam sae jaanta hai! ;) )
You see in sanskrit,....it is derived from the word 'Seenh' (kinda difficult to write the word in English, I tried and wrote it in the way it is pronounced in Sanskrit! )

The fact that it is shared by a lot of other castes in India: Sardar's, Rajput's (and surprisingly even a lot of Trinidadian's and Fijians; for example there is this hugely famous Golf player- Vijay Singh in the US of A who actually belongs to Fiji!), unfortunately means that we (the Jats) do not neccessarily have the copyright on it.

Jat was always identified by his last name i.e. clan name

singh, khan, lal, kumar, verma, chaudhary, ... etc. used 2 be the temporary symbols among jats. but since birth 2 death, n even after that jat was identified by his sur-name means clan name.

i'd been 2 muslim jat site for a few days (under the garb of nawabijutt) but they also save their clan names while marrying, thats what i learnt from there. and it gave me the pleasure deep down to my heart. i heard there from gujranwala jat saying that I'm cheema n my mother is nagra, thats against the marriage rules; if cheema and nagra are the same tribe.

jat was the most democratic, self reliant and practical person

he never knew god or knew it more than n e body else. but always relied upon a leader in war. its leaders were always elected like indra, jatau-jatan, jat of jats n king of kings, as he is mentioned in rigveda.

jats simplicity can be judged from the fact that he easily adopted islam, sikh, christienity, hinduism, bisnoi, kabirpanthi, jainism, budhism, judaism, ....

but remained jat first.

rk ji

like ur logic what i liked most about indo-european where india is b4 european, similar was jat; jat sikh, jat muslim, jat hindu, jat christien, jat bisnoi etc.

even budhism n jainism could never stop a well determined jat from his martial characteristics.

jat is a jat first because its more ancient than his other suffixes behind him except for his clan name.

jat never used 2 b a castiest figure

swami dayananda, hazrat sahib, respected gurus, yeshu ji, jambushwarji, kabirji, budhaji, mahavirji..

hardly anybody of them was jat but jat always laid his head for them... giving them the status of more than god.

guru gobind dono khade ka ke lagunn paaye, balihari guru aapne jin givind diyo milaye.

jats n their clan names

Soko norman wrote : The Jats undoubtedly descend from the easternmost branch of the Sarmatian people, the Yazyg of Central Asia, that curiously have the same name of the westernmost branch in the Danubian region: Jász, Jat, Jut. During the British rule over India, colonizers and scholars noticed to their astonishment that many Jat people had apparently English family names or very similar. Certainly the proud Jats would have never adopted British surnames for their own ancestral clans, and they did not result from intermarriage either. Other foreign powers ruled over the Indus Valley before and for longer periods than England, yet no Jat clan names corresponding to the previous rulers have been found. Besides this, no other Indian people had such names except Jats. This peculiarity led scholars to research ab.......

Well, i think the motto of this thread is to discuss about the suname singh. Maybe some people trying to discuss that's not relevent here. Why don't they throw some light on Singh surname instead of using some jargons or any other thoughts.

muslim jats are known as mulejat ( and not jat muslim) in UP.
