Those of you who have been to countries like US, UK and European countries can easily make out the huge difference between the traffic sense between those countries and ours. I barely listen a horn in US, see red-light jumps and people criss-crossing in the lanes whereas this is a story in every part of India including metros.

I think correcting Traffic problems should be the easiest one. Few times back in Delhi, a rule was made for separate lane driving for buses, it worked for a brief period of time and then back to the same story. I think we have enough Traffic policemen to challan people not following the rules. If the rules are implemented strictly and people are charged everytime they drive in wrong lanes, cross a red-light, criss-cross without giving indicators, over a period of time everybody will be scared of shelling out money for even a small mistake and will start behaving.

Even in US, its not that people just have great civic sense rather there is a fear of paying hefty fines for even a small mistake which also affects the insurance premium. Why can't government work on implementing such things so that it becomes habit of people after some time. This will also add greatly to the revenue for the govt. I know some people would try to bribe the traffic man but for how long. Even shelling out 50rs. note everytime you make a mistake is not small and nobody would want that.

Did you know how haryana roadways employees behaved recently on issue of fines by Delhi Police.

Also, what's the deal with businessmen of Delhi, why would they oppose the sealing thing? What's wrong with having businesses only in commercial areas and not in residential areas.

I remember how families of victims of Kandhar hijacking acted, none of them said anything against terrorism it was all about getting their family members back no matter what the cost was.

The whole thing is, when it comes to you paying the price for setting things right the idea of better civic sense goes out of window.

The traffic rules which I talked about are already in place and when there is a fear of paying fines, the civic sense automatically comes to you. For ex, many times Traffice police creates a drive for various rules like helmet, Seat-belt or black car windows and everytime this happens people start following this even if its for a week or 2.

If the traffic police does it everyday or randomly every 2 weeks, it will itself make huge amount of money and people will also start following religiously. After all no one wants to pay money unnecessarily.

Even in US, just remove the Traffic Cameras from redlight crossings, then you will see an increase in Red-light jumpings. So, its a mix and match of Civic sense and fear of paying hard earned money everytime.

Hi Prashant,

The problem of traffic in metors is becuase of lack of infrastructure.

Surface area of all roads in delhi is less than the no. of vehicles commute on them everyday.

Roads are not enough to support around 1.5 crore population. Issuing tickets is not a solution. We need multi level approach to decongest the roads.

1. Better flyovers and alternate transport systems like Metro, Monorail.

2. Encourage people to use bicycles in congested areas.

3. Encouraging people to use Mass transport system like Mumbai local train.

Problem here is of population my friend.. It will take its own sweet time to get resolved.

Cheers

Yudhvir bhai,

Lack of infrastructure is one thing but following traffic rules is another. While we obviously need to look into the need for much better infrastructure, we must implement the rules which are already there. Reducing population is another problem which we can take in another thread :)

I will give you a practical example. Today, in Noida I cannot cross a green light without stopping at the light, looking around that there is no one jumping the redlight, no rickshaw puller going in between the road and no cyclists pedalling as if there is no traffic signal and thinking they are the sole owners of the road. I don't think this is due to lack of infra or higher population. People just don't care a hoot for the rules and believe in giving 20 ka note if caught. Why can't we change this?

Once, I was going to delhi from noida, driving in my lane..suddenly I see a car coming from opposite side driving in the reverse lane right opposite me..I was furious and gave n no. of galis to that man..this is what I think can and should be changed without waiting for population to come down or infra to come up..

Population

Foreign kee toolnaa me hamare desh kee population kai guna jyada hai oosee
ke anusaar vahan sankhya bhee jyada hai. Traffic Niyamo kee to baat hee
chod do kitne niyam hai or kitne niyam log mante hai aap delhi ko hee lelijeeye auto ya single riksha wale ek tyre ghusane kee jagah miljaye bakee
ke dono wo apne aap ghusa leta hai fir hamre lycence dene ka kayada
dalal 600 se 1000 Rs/- me aapko two wheelers to kya four wheelers ka bhee
lycence dila dete hai. Mere pass hai four wheelers ka jabkee mujhe handle
bhee pakdna nahi aataa. To is desh kee toolna bahar ke desho se karna
bada mushkil hai.

Raat ko kitne driver deepar ka istmaal karte hai or kitno ke head light aadhi
kali hai kon bata sakta hai ye padhe likhe logo ke hal hai anpadh kee to baat
chod do ye mai delhi kee bat kar raha hoo ya to koi check nahi karta agar
koi karta hai to 100 Rs dekar chod deta hai agar chalan bhee kat deta hai
to court me 50 Rs tak me kam hojata hai.

Traffic Problem more because of corruption,

Prrashant Bhai,

Traffic problem in Delhi is due to large scale corruption in traffic police. If govt. put cameras on red lights then more traffic regulate. Lesser the traffic
police on signals make more traffic regulate. They are taking brive after doing
something wrong by somebody and taking monthly from commercial vehicles
that why this problem is gorwing fater in Delhi. People are driving without
helmets, with more passanger then prescribed, car running with black glasses, with wrong number plates, without using seat belts and jumping red
light are fashion here.

The first solution, minimise traffic police mans on signals, Challans will be done automatically through camras.

Regards

The root cause of every problem in our country is Lack of Self Discipline. These rules, cameras, cops cant do much in a single day, we need to develop self discipline n patience. We shudnt bother about others, we should try to do our part.
Whenever i change my lane i always give indicator ( though lanes are not much specified ). Many times people think that i dont know how to handle switches of my machine :D (as i am a female) Maine to bahut baar comments bhi sune hain, "madam indicator on hai" with a sarcastic touch obviously :D even people driving luxury cars n sedans never leave any such opportunity of commenting :) But still i always try to do right. Apne aap ko sudharenge to sab sudhar jaenge n if they dont, let them. Atleast i have the satisfaction that i am a good citizen :)
So all the fellow Jatlanders lets start from ourselves first :)
But ya this discussion should continue, is se hi to pata chalege. What should be changed :D

i support ur view , in our we have many rule but it require will power within syestem to implement and people have ro understand its benifits , u can take the example of chandigarh , here people follow all the traffic rule because of vigilant traffic police. in chandigarh u can some when sitting on a driving seat , but u can break all rules if u r in panchkula.

apart from that there r lots os safety issue which r not undertaken in consideration here in india , now we r moving ahed very rapidly in transport syestem ( expressways, national highways ) which r passing through the rural area also . it create nusense for fast moving vehicle when some body coming on wrong side of divided carriage way to reduce the accident frequency the highway patrol team must fine them and syestem should be developed to make a cross check on higway patrol police or traffic police who r culprit or motivate driver to break the traffice rule by taking a bribe

netrapal ji
u r also rt , but dis is the responsibility of goverment to provide the facility to country man by developing a infrastrure. govt is well known about the population growth from begining.

foe kind information as per concern of traffic syestem or road infrastructure , govt. taking cess on fule approx rs 2 per lit on fuel only othersource of income r registration fee , tyre spare part, from manufacturer etc. and toll tax on national highways

another problem tht faces Indian traffic is the wide variety of vehicles plying on the roads..these r-->>

cars, buses, autorickshaw, cyclerickshaw, bicycles, motorcycles nd scooters, small tempos tht carry goods around the city, taxis, various animal carts and we can add stray animals too to the list,as they also sumtimes cause traffic jams....
if we gradually try to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads...then the congestion might be reduced...

Somebody was saying tht in Rohtak the Autorickshaws r divided in two grps nd they r to ply their vehicles on alternate days...(I m not sure if its true or not..but sure seems to be a nice idea of reducing the congestion on the roads..)

very well put miss....self discipline combined with stricter implementation of existing rules will surely go a long way in putting the motorists on the right "path"....
besides, instead of blaming the govt. everytime...if we utilize the existing facilities judiciously it will help to reduce the traffic snarls...

You are right,

You are right but what we do when no body bothers about our indicator or nobody like to give way on his right, no one is ready to go in right lane.

I think smoth trafic will run only when every one will follow the system otherwise we as folloer of rules will definately be in trouble on road.

My car was hit from the back side only because of not jumping signal on yellow light its heppen three times in three years.

a suggestion...

to reduce the traffic woes in Delhi...i suggest tht the small tempos, which carry goods around the city, should be banned.
these tempos break down in the middle of the road, especially on the flyovers as their axels cannot support the heavy load....for delhiites its an everyday scene with a tempo in the middle of the road during rush hour, blocking the traffic...
similarly many a times trucks nd buses breakdown in the middle of the road causing huge traffic jams...

for this there shud be a prompt TOW-Away service....tht shud take away the vehicle from the site...

We can't correct the traffic problems just by Self discipline. I try as hard as I can to drive in lanes in India, stopping at red lights but when people around dont give a damn and blow horns on you if you stop at red light or shout at you if keep on driving in lane then it will cause nothing but frustration or lead to situation as Karamveer ji mentioned.

Similarly, I think even if there is corruption in Traffic police, as far as they try to implement rules and ask for bribe when you break it, that would be still be sufficient for the time being. How long will people keep on bribing..after all its their money. Corruption is an altogether different issue of our country and we need to devise various ways to tackle that..but as a STF (Short Term Fix), implement all rules immediately even if that means traffic police asking for bribe..people would start following due to fear of police and paying fine everytime..laaton ke bhoot baaton se nahi maante :o

Maybe people among us who have acquaintance with MP/MLA of a particular area can coax him to implement this in his/her area and make it a model town atleast for Traffic!! I am planning to talk to Noida MP atleast for my area in my next trip to home..
