These figures are floated by politicians and I don't think there is much truth in this. Haryana deserves the water more than sending it to arabian sea via pakistan. Natural resources belong to whole country and can not be the sole property of one state. Don't forget that Haryana was carved out of punjab and has to get its share of resources.

I believe supreme court gave it´s judgement long back and Punjab Govt didnt implement it. Although figures used during the case were fairly old( circa 1950s) and situation has changed from then. But that doesnt mean that people of Haryana shouldnt get their due. Politicians of Punjab are trying to use this issue to gain political mileage. As Rajendra jee rightly pointed out that it is far better that extra water is used for irrigation of arid areas of Haryana than to add to prosperity of feudal landlords of western punjab who are sworn enemies of India.
But I dont think that reasoning goes any far with people of punjab, as they have got used to see anything and everything with glasses with "khalistani" tinge , and it has become fashionable to term any step of further integration with state of india as a part of "brahmanistic" or "hindu" designs over punjab.
And at the end of the day I seriously doubt whether this agreement will be implemented as Khalistani elements have started raising their voice and will use this as pretext of further bloodshed. Tough to choose between devil and sea( quite literally here).

I do not beleive that "khaslitani tinge" is to blame here. Like any other dispute over water sharing, This dispute has more to do with state politics.

the khalistani sentiment is a natural reaction of punjabis to the attack on golden temple by a terrorist lady called indira, and also the massacres of punjabi sikhs in delhi by a bastard named rajiv gandhi. this might hurt your feelings, but in punjab, no one hates pakistani punjabis, as punjabi is a race, and paki punjabis are our brothers, only thing that divides the two punjabis is our religion. but we still share the same language, culture, food and traditions. so to be honest, punjabi sikhs have more similarities with the paki punjabis, then we have with the rest of india.
peace!

what a sick mentality you have. Looks like you people have forgotten history when sikhs were butured in west punjab in 1947 by so called your paki punjabi brothers. in 60 years they have become your brothers and you have nothing to do with rest of the India. Khalsa came in existence not because of Punjabi sikhs but because of Guru Gobind Singh and hope you know he was not Punjabi. Why don't you guys clain Nankana sahib from your paki punjabi brothers if u think they are so close to you? If they can not give the birth place of Guru nanak, what sort of brothers you are? This is the tragedy of most Indians that they try to seek relation with very same people who kicked their butts...By the way are you in some relationship with jagjit singh chohan as u seem to be speaking his language..

I believe we dont need to be enraged at what this self proclaimed saviour-uniter of "punjabi race" is preaching. Polemic, rhetoric are their staple diet and however logical we might be they will not come out of their fancied world.
I think this thread was started to discuss about SYL canal but instead of answering to some valid points raised he chose to talk about "similariies" between muslims and sikh punjabis.
Best response would be not to answer to this thread anymore.
Oh yes it seems that "punjabi race" has this habit of being stuck in past: those living on east of wagah in early 80s and those on west in mughal era.
I am still waiting for their "fuehrer". ;-)

Dear All,

Let us forgive the ignorance of the gentleman who doesn't seem to be a JAT in the first place. That he has no knowledge of history is proven by his post (though I may have to eat my words for he may turn out to be a doctorate in History).

Let's get back to the topic of SYL Canal. It has been argued by many thinkers that the next big conflict in the world would be for control of WATER. It has been argued by Samuel Huntington in his thesis 'Clash of Civilizations' as well.

Thankfully people have started taking steps towards conservasion of water. Many NGOs are working towards water conservation in different parts of the country. Water will have to be saved and shared. There is no alternative to this. That's why the government is now talking of connecting rivers.

The SYL Canal issue is pending for a rather long time now and Haryana should get its rightful share of water from Sutlej River. All those who know facts on the ground would know that Punjab would not suffer by giving water to Haryana. And this water is a natural resource and not produced by the people of Punjab. Even we were part of the Punjab state till 31 Oct 1966. My fear is the politisation of this issue. You already saw how illogical can people get while discussing this issue. Wait till the next Assembly elections in Haryana and you would see this issue taking center stage. I can foresee Punjab Roadways buses being burnt in Haryana, as had happened earlier. Since the politicians can't deliver on their earlier promises and don't have a developmental record to show, they will end up diverting peoples mind by exploiting issues like SYL Canal. And the Brahman lobby will exploit the situation. Who else can be a better target than JATS of Punjab and Haryana. The Refugee Punjabis on both sides will profit from such a fight as they always have. As it is these refugees have few thing missing from their DNA. Things like 'Izzat', 'Laaj', 'Sharam' and trustworthyness.

This issue is best left to experts. The various committees have given their reports and Supreme Court has announced its judgement. The construction work of the canal must start sooner than later to avoid confrontation between brothers.

Regards,

Lt Col JS Malik (Retd)

If one looks at the price of bottled water, it is more expensive than milk and in many countries more expensive than petrol. So definitely its going to be the mother of all future wars. Day is not too far when china will like to divert the water of manay Indian rivers which originate in Tibbet. High time Haryana builds large reservoires which can be filled during monsoon season and used later on..There is no way, whole India has to reserve land for such big size reservoires, else we are doomed..I will even go a step further to suggest..Let us think of some under sea pipe line which can get pure water from Antarctica..Its feasible and economic to get pure water this way...It will help Tamilnadu at least if not others...

Dear All,
I am deeply hurt by what Mr. Ajay Singh Chohan has written about his feelings towards Pak Vs Rest of India. Why Col Malik has discussed the issue in great details, I have some questions to ask and some suggestions to offer.
Questions:
1. None of the rivers that flows through Punjab originates with in the geographical boundries of Punjab. If that be so, how come this has become property of Punjab?

2. If it is not the property of Punjab, then, it is either the property of the state from where it originates or the national property. If it is national property then, the Central Government should have the courage to implement the Supreem Court Judgement.

3. Mr. Ajay Chohan is willing to give this water to Pakistani Punjabis, whose fore fathers butchered Indian Punjabis and molested their women during partition. I am not here to aggravate wrong feelings against any one, but that is part of history.

4. The dividing line may be as thin as it is, between Pakistani Punjabis, and Indian Punjabis, but then it is the international border.

5. Fianlly, what is the status of Mr. Chohan to represent the entire Punjabi population.

6. If Mr. Ajay Chohan is an analytical person, then should not he maintain the decorum of this site? We welcome all Jats whether from Punjab, or any other part of the world, whether Sikh or Mona on this site but wish to maintain a decorum for it. The only Jats we don't appreciate on this site are the "Sick" Jats.

7. I am stongly against what happened in Delhi in 84 but, I have not regrets of Indian Government using force to flush out terrorists from the place of worship, be it temple, mosque, Church or Gurudwara. We can't allow our religeous institutions to be used as safe haven by terrorists.

Now some suggestions:

1. Haryana should get its legitimate share of Satluz water. For example if Haryana is 50% of total land area of undivided Punjab, then it should get 50% of Satluz water.

2. To make up this deficiency we should think in terms of linking Chenab, Vyas and Satluz river by an extensive canal system along our Western border. This will not only make up the deficiency of water in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, but also create series of formidable obstacles against any Pakistani aggression.

3. A nice road work can be developed along these canals. This will facilitate communication during peace and allow lateral movement of armed forces in the event of war.

4. I would say, even the project of linking Ganga with Yamuna shuold be considered to make up the shortage of water in the areas along Yamuna right from Delhi to Agra.

I am deeply hurt by Mr. Chohan's statement that they have more similarity across the border than this side of the border. If that be so, why doesn't he go across and live there. Pakistanis would be too happy to get one more Muhazir.

This Ajay Singh Chohan is probably a Rajput and not a Jat. Just like politician Jagjit Singh Chohan who is a Rajput.

Anyways, 2 points from me:

1. Kalkhunde Ji touched upon it in his first post. Haryana was originally carved out of Punjab. But - if we stretch it, districts like Patiala were never part of Punjab. They were independent kingdoms.
The Patiala Sikhs were instrumental in helping the British overthrow the Sikh Empire (once ruled by Maharaja Ranjit Singh); and then again a decade later, they helped the British in quelling the 1857 revolt in Maalwa/Delhi regions from Jats/Ahirs etc.

So - begs the question, what right does a Patiala Jat Sikh have over a Haryanvi Jat Sikh??
Most punjabi sikhs - khalistani tilted or not - will always be clean bowled by that question.

2. will agree with that idiot on 1 point - I hate the Gandhis. All of them (except Maneka). Itna gandio ke bare mein main bhi keh loonga!

Ramandeep.

Haryana state is not 50% of the undivided Punjab.

Leaving aside Pakistani Punjab, the East Punjab is states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Union territories of Chandigarh and Delhi.

To resolve all outstanding issues this entire East Punjab (but probably minus Delhi) should be merged together into one unit called Punjab.

Punjab, Haryana and Himachal are small useless states as they exist now. Look at other areas of India and see how large and intact the states are then look in north-west corner and see three small useless states.

Time to reunite East Punjab and put an end to all petty issues.

My opinion,

Regards,

I have tried to stay out of this discussion, having some idea where it is most likely to end up.

But there are dangers of staying out too, as we all know.

Members may recall some time ago, that I had suggested that Jats of the Sikh faith be allowed to be members and participate in discussions.

My reasons were that communication would avoid misunderstandings, and lead to more harmony.

Some members were vehemently opposed and this site was not opened up.

Now we have here an issue the SYL canal that affects the Jats of Punjab and Non Punjab.

Like others I am also concerned that this issue will become a conflagration between the Jats and Punjab , Haryana and UP, which will be happily exploited by politicians of all colours

There are a lot of harmful stereotypes that are being created, and as there is no interaction, there is no discussion, and no detoxification, I am afraid we are going to see more divisiveness.

Ajay Singh Chohan is a young Jat Sikh, who has his share of conceptions and misconceptions, and a haste to use inappropriate words

He posted on this site, and was promptly banned, according to his post on another site.

Thus posters referring to this issue here, like Ajay Bamal or Ramandeep, are not talking to him, but to the walls of a closed room.

This site is not immune to non Hindu Jats. A visit to Jat Sikh sites, shows they are open to all, and they wonder why this site is closed.

Some have entered this site, and are copying and posting the material onto those sites.

http://www.jattworld.com/exoops/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=588&forum=1

The misconceptions are plenty. How do you clear them up?

I will suggest

by open discussion.

Would it not be better, simply to allow those who wish to participate to do so openly ?

Why call it "Punjab"? When most of the people in this hypothetical bloc wont even speak Punjabi?
Why not a Jat-stan?
Yet again we see Singh-Sabha imperialist views in action.
