Hi guys,

I don't know if anyone else noticed this or not but one team from each of the eight original groups made it to the quaterfinals. Quite a coincidence.

I am also interested in finding out what your thoughts are on which team has impressed you the and which team has disappointed the most so far.

....wow, that's right! Good observation, Puneet!

and a good idea on the discussion! Here goes on my two cents:

The team that has impressed me the most in this is the Argentinian team...they are playing very good all round complete soccer, and really delightfully deadly at the goal mouth.
While, it has always been tradionally a strong football nation, no doubt; but that means nothing nowadays.....specially after those Maradona and Batistuta days they have kinda floundered on the international scene. Anyways, for somebody like me who only gets involved into the game at the time of the world cup and really don't follow the ups and downs of the individual players and nation performances, this team's spirit and skill etc. has been quite a pleasant revelation!....
The team that has disappointed me so far (even though they have scraped thru somehow all this while) is England! With so many stars and on paper supposedly the best line up ever.....they have hardly lived up to anyone's expectations! (even their own Nation's; whose papers are rife of discontent even on their supposed nail-biting winning performances)....

Also, maybe it is time in this thread to start predict the finals too: My pick is Germany and Brazil (I would have loved to say...Germany-Argentina....but that happens this Friday and is really the finals! and Germany looks omnious, with the home advantage in their favor too!)...
and really on second helpings I would gladly take a Brazil-Argentina final too!!!

My views are slighty different and perhaps a little biased. Australia impressed me the most and Netherlands disappointed the most.

No one gave Australia any chance of getting through to the second group but they gave a good performance in all four games that they played. They have played good attacking football and have as a team transformed in the last year - under Guus Hiddnik. Only last year they lost 3 games in a row in the confederations cup and well completely outplayed by Tunisia.

On the other end of the spectrum the Dutch were - well Dull. I expected a lot more from the Semifinalist in 1998 and two time finalist in the 70's. After all they are known for playing entrprising football and are considered masters at using the entire width of the field. Let's just say expectations were not met.

@ shailandra: South American giants Argentina and Brazil are expected to play exciting, skillful football with a lot of flair, arrogance and technical excellence. Having said that Argentina have been the best team in the competetion so far. As for England, I think I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, only God and maybe the queen know how they will perform. One of my pommy friends at work said that they not playing well and winning, imagine if they played well. Well we can only hope that they can turn in a performance worthy of their indiviual talents.

my finals prediction(just to be differnt) : Germany V England - and riots to follow no matter who wins.

...Interesting observations Puneet!

Here is some more food for thought: Don't dismiss Brazil so easily! Brazil is still looking deadly no matter what!
The only weakness that the Brazilian's have is supposedly their defense (specially even when their midfielders are pressing forward into a deadly attack), but then their main motto anyways has always been: attack, attack...attack! (like the say for Brazil,"If you score two, Brazil will score three!"... and that kind of reputation is hard to dismiss!)
Watch for the Brazil-France game, Ronaldo is out for revenge (can anyone forget how he supposedly choked in the finals against them infront of the whole world?)...he would be a mean customer that day hopefully!

I liked how your pommy friend put it though....

Brazil are an extremely good team even though they haven't really played the free flowing football they are known for. I saw some glimpes in the match against Japan, especially in the second half and hope they can reproduce that kind of football in the rest of the games.

P.S: where are the rest of the guys?

Argentina OUT

DEKHA BOLA THA NA... BAD NEWS FOR ALL ARGENTINA FANS... HA HA... .SOMEBODY HAS TO GO SABATTICAL FROM JATLAND... MEIN BOL RAHA THA JEETEGA BHI JEETEGA GERMANY JEETEGA... ULTIMATELY BRAZIL WILL BE WINNER, dekh lena.... I GENERALLY CHEER FOR UNDERDOGS BUT I LOVE PERFECTION, SKILLS AND CLEAN GAME AND BRASIL IS SYNONIMOUS WITH US...

Argentina slightly dominated the 90 min game but Germany fought and fought... Germany's goal involved more skill then Argentina's corner goal... in the end all the players were to tired... bechara Ballak... phir bhi penalty kick out tak fight marte rahe... Home ground made the difference

Argentina is not a team to go down like this but still they fought bravely and it doesnt matter if they lost in penalties, they performed really well. If it were a neutral venue they would have certainly won. Their ball possession was also more than Germans.I was surprised when players like Cambiasso and Ayala missed penalties. Klose did it again for Germans.
Now today, again a big day with 2 big matches. I wish Portugal and France should advance:) .
Daksch where have you been????

Guys ..... my world cup is certainly over.........
Argentina played bravely in the german backyard..............
There is no doubt they foiled the game plan of germany in the first half.....I think the turning point is the injury to their goalkeeper and some decisions of pekerman....... he substituted requelme and didnt bring savoila and messi......all the players played well ...cambiasso, rodriguez....
These guys deserve the world cup....On the other hand , i will never pay a single dollar or wake up in the middle of night to watch germany or italy or england play ....their football doesnt interest me..........

same here bro,
I've also lost intrest in world cup...my fav. team is out :(
btw, Im still with Pourtgal!

rock on

Yes guys, Brazil was totally upset by France in every whichever way! Totally out-played, out-manouvered and left holding the lollipop!!! I had of course been rooting for Brazil for all this time, they were really playing good football till before this game........ but guess what; surprisingly I was not at all distraught at the end and after watching the whole game, why would anyone be?....Brazil was not in this match at ALL!!!........ No one deserves to go thru by playing like that, specially not the last world cup Champions themselves; Consider this- the French goalie was never challenged at all in the game! Not even ONCE!!! Nada!.....The Brazilian offense was COMPLETELY missing.......
In the end good job France (and Zidane)...

I was really-really sad after Argentina bowed out yesterday! ...[reminds me; then today England too did not play (again) to their potential as was touted on paper!]... Rooney should hang his head in shame for trying to play the hard ass tough guy in such a crucial game, and leaving his country down to 10 men!

Ah well; If it has come down to an all European Cup then my bet stays with my other fav to get to the Final: Germany it is then.............................Go Aryans! (just kidding! ;) )

Guys, I also have lost interest in world cup... I don't understand it.. although I cudn't watch Brazil's match becuz we were in AJA picnic. All the equations have changed... es moh-maya mein ab kuchh nahi rahya...

All European affair now!!!!

Dear Binod, Did you break our deal? ok, Never mind;)
England couldnt score even in penalties so they didnt deserve to go to semis.Argentina's eviction was truly disappointing. They fought really brave and deserved to win but I think German crowd might have made the difference. I indicated in my earlier post (127) about Portugal and France and they did advance. Zidane played exceptionally well and his game was inspirational.Henry struck at right time. I knew that France will definitely go upto semis and even to finals if Zidane and co. strike again. Deco is coming back so Portugal will not be an easy team to beat. Portugal will certainly give hard time to France. They both are my favourite but unfortunately both cant win at same time:rolleyes: .
Keep watching its not over!!!!

Nahee Nahee Vinod, esa kaam mat kar yaar!!! Yo bimari chaar saal main ek baar hi aave sai, ot le nae!...kae jhulam kar rhya sai es stage pae aake!?!
Bhai yo khel mein esa hi hua kare!
You win some, you lose some.....don't fret too much and keep enjoying the festivities, nothing has ended yet; not the action by a long stretch at least!!!

Abhi to aur discussion baki sai....

Football is still winning and it is still fair play all around (though our most fav teams may have bowed out early)...you still should go ahead and chose your next fav from the contenders and enjoy the sport.........believe me you, after the final is over you shall miss all the sneaking away from work to watch the football action and all the joy and disappointment of those won and lost strikes on the goal......

Keep WATCHING!!!

Yess!!!

FINALLY!!! The men have been separated from the boys!

the german 'babies' luck finally ran out! and about time too! All they had was crowd support and luck since the beginning....and Everyone knows who played better in germany vs argentina...just their damned luck worked again in the penalties...

I hope its France vs Italy...a dream final now...with the french making the samba dancers look like a school team in the quarters...i believe they deserve it, their game has build up really strong and they did not burn out really quick in the tournament....

:) :) :)

Nahee yaar Vivek, come on....it was not just pure luck for the Germans; tell me frankly- which team thrilled you throughout with their game in today's semi-finals normal time play of the 90 minutes??? (if you watched the whole thing, that is)....
But yes, to be very-very fair; Italy came out with full guns blazing in both the Over-time halfs! No doubt!!!...they pelted the German goal and it was pure luck for the Germans this time, like you say....to stay float; only for it to run out and to drown in the last three-four minutes!!!...

I hope too now that it is France-Italy! (though all my fav. are not officially out! Heh! Heh!)....go football!!!
