Dear Jatlanders, it gives me great pleasure to announce that our own Col. Jagmohan Malik has graciously accepted to take over as Director of Sukh Ram Memorial Public School, Kalirawan, Hisar as of August 1, 2006.
Let me first give a brief description of the school. My wife Santosh and I started this charitable school in my village in 2001. School takes in 60 kids every year, age 4-5 years in LKG. So far we have 435 students up to 6th grade. We already have the recognition from Haryana Bd of Education up to 10+2, a Haryana Govt. requirement before we can be associated with CBSE. Now after getting NOC from Haryana, we will apply for affiliation with CBSE. School building of about 45,000 SF, 3-stories is complete, and is enough for high school. Teacher’s quarters and a Guest House (for Jatlander volunteers who would like to impart some of their knowledge to students) are under construction and will be completed within the next three months. Since there is no residential arrangement for students, all the students are from Kalirawan itself. School is situated on 28 acres on Hisar to Bhadra Road. Couple of pictures of the school facilities may be viewed at www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11886. Santosh and I go to India twice a year to spend some time at the school.
At present we have a teaching staff of 17, a very dedicated and hardworking staff. For the first couple of years, the medium of instruction was Hindi but then changed to English. I was very apprehensive when we changed the medium to English but students and teachers were very excited and are doing well. Monthly fee was Rs 60 and is changed to Rs. 60 for KG, 80 for primary and 120 for middle school. The total increased revenue from this change has been provided to teachers as pay increase. All near future increases in revenue will also be provided to the staff as additional pay increase. Santosh and I are providing and will provide for all the Capital Expenditure (land, buildings and infrastructure, furniture, playgrounds, landscaping etc). In addition to capital expenditure, at present there is and will be in the near future a deficit of about Rs.1500. per student per year, which we provide for.
Most of you are familiar with Col. Malik, however let me add what I think he is and what will he add to the school’s future. He is a very dedicated person to family, welfare of the community and rural education. He has a pragmatic approach to any problem with very balanced views on life and everyday happenings. His vision for the future of this institution is similar to ours. He insisted that he will not stay in Hisar (about 16 miles) but in the school premises so that he can devote his full attention to the affairs of the school as well as to the welfare of the villagers. It is ours and school’s good fortune to have a person of his caliber to take care of the day to day affairs of the school and future plans. It is a turning point in the short history of the school.
My heartfelt thanks to Col Malik for accepting to be part of our dream, for leaving a comfortable life in Mumbai and taking the responsibility of the welfare of the students and the villagers. Some Jatlanders have asked as to what we get out of Jatland.com? Now this is one example where we would not have met if there were no Jatland.com and that would have been the misfortune of the school. My thanks to Nitin Dahiya for creating this site.
