Dear Jasbir,

Every word of what you have mentioned, is true. Many of us have very strong desire and sound strategies in place already..Trust me, you will see some action on the ground. There will be initial problems and frustrations, but I am sure we will address them all as we move along.

We all know in what a mess India was when Gandhi ji arrived in India from SA. He inspired people to the extent that many left their well paid jobs and joined the freedom movement. Rural India is almost at the same point where whole India was at that point. Some of us have to give up our personal comforts to make rural India shine...there is no short cut..

Coudn't agree with that more....it's a very interesting topic to debate within our own conscience and judgement....

Priti makes a valid point here...sports is one area where Jats in general have a natural flair....I would like to cite the example of village Johri near Baraut where the villagers without any government support put up a shooting range and produced some good shooters......with little institutional support such initiatives can go a long way in providing alternatives to the youth.....

Yes Varun. I know about this great work by my very cloase friend Dr Raj Pal Singh. His efforts are really commandable. We need people like him who really care for villages.

Now that Deepender has become an MP, let us debate this topic further. Issue is very important and needs ongoing discussions. Employment is important not only for educated youth, but for semi-educated and others as well.

Jat Youth

If youth community in Jats can give up the typical Jat attitude from their Minds and can be motivated towards the self employment then only we can grow because creation of sarkari & private jobs at mass level is not possible.

As i have already mentioned in one of some previous thread & its very shamefull to share with you all people about what I observed in Rohtak(being a Education Hub in the area) that college boys coming from various villages to city for studies and just passing their time by playing cards & watching movies in theatres and simply blowing off the hard money earned by their parents. Most of the college students desire a job after completion of their graduation and if they dont get the same for a year or two then they are getting attracted towards the crimes to maintain their needs.

Where as for eg if any one of you get a chance to travel by local trains from various nearby NCR places(Jats dominated Rohtak,Bhiwani,Sonipat,Rewari, Merrut) to Delhi. You will find most of the daily passenger are non- Jats and of the very young age group involved in small-2 trading business & earning some good money (at least for themselves). So it is very important to motivate our Community’s youth generation about Self employment or some cooperative businesses.

Job ?

My dear all, Jobs are not easy to come by as govt jobs have almost dried up and part of it [whatever we have] are grabbed by reserve categories. On the top of it, most of our young boys do not have the chrishma and qualification to get those [a few left over jobs]. Our youth lacks direction and purpose. There is no fire inside to do well in life.Food is available in plenty and uneducated parents don't know what to do and hence the younger generation end up doing what they feel like doing......? Then our people have this MARRODD of considering every job below their dignity. All want to be appointed Deputy Commissioners straightaway and that too with a request from the hirer. We have to change this mindset first. If jobs are not available in Haryana,UP,Rajashthan and MP then these people have to move out and fend for themselves and not burdon the parents and indulge in anti-social activities thereby bringing bad name to the kaum and state. They should not be offered GICHCH ROTIES and comfort after they have attained Majority. They should be kicked out of the house to fend for themselves. We ourselves are responsible for the situation we are in today as we have not worked out and planned the future of our generation. Today it is the survival of the fittests and if you are not there to catch the bus then sit and repent. A great damage has already been done in last 30-40 years by neglecting education and if we still don't pay heed then Jats may not be so proud a Kaum in near future. Let us contribute in our own way to bring the youth out of this quigmire of uncertainity and gloom. Bhai Deependra ji, you also have a larger responsibility on your brave shoulders.

Samay rehte jo nahin jaga,wo ho gya luppt jammane se
Jo hua karte dil ke tukdde, wo lagne lagte hein beganne se

RK Uncle jee

Today the serious problem among young generation is that they are heading in wrong direction and most of young jats of my age group are really heading toward Nasha and this problem is not a small problem. I have seen lots and lots of youngsters smoking Sulfa and taking other drugs and due to this they dont have any direction to follow. My personal beleif is that this issue is really demands action. Our young MP should have to look on this factor too and take the class of Police that wht they are doing in stopping drugs in the area. I can Say District rohtak is really in the worse situation these days due to drugs problem. Another thing abt Unemployement is that its not possible for govt. to give jobs to everyone so people have to start there small scale businesses and they can use loans to start their business. One more thing is that Now Deepender Bhai saab have to overlook the Bank managers that how they charge big sum of money from rural areas people to grant them loan.

Very Good topic and need of the hour

:) Dear friends,
It is heartening to see young jats taking interest in future planning. There are a few good examples where individuals have tried very hard to help rural community in their own manners i.e. education, employment, attitude.
In my opinion these three pillars are essential to sustained development. Let us do some risk assessment on some of the ideas and see how far they are likely to help.

Starting with the facts.
Fact 1 - India is developing economically through industrialisation and knowledge based exports.
Fact 2 - Land holdings of Jats is declining and has reached to a stage when moving out of the village has become a necessity for some members of the family.
Fact 3 - Rural youth are not able to find decent jobs easily in cities.
Fact 4 - Performance of past Governments in attracting industry to Haryana is debatable.

What can be done- A lot needs to be done and each one of us has our jobs cut out but just have to see it clearly.

1. Government can build infrastructure for industrialisation and skills development. Skills development is more important than industries themselves. If a person has skills he/she can relocate to where the jobs are. Technical trade skills are very important. Not every one has to become an Engineer but an average youth can become a technician within a few years provided such a facility is available. Need for technicians is always there and it is likely to increase with more industries coming in to the country. So Deepender please consider this option as one possibility with a very low risk of failure. What can go wrong if Govt. builds a few trade schools and runs them rather than handing over to fly by night operators whose only interest is profit.

2. Those of us who have moved from village to city have their role cut out i.e. to encourage others to look around for opportunities which probably they can not identify. Also provide whatever guidance or assistance we can provide.

3. Those who are at student level or looking for jobs can look beyond Government jobs and consider other options e.g. learning some marketable skills.

4. Those who are in a financial position to help others, provide scholarships and build infrastructure in cities and link them to villages e.g. warehouse or retail outlets for products from rural areas. These businesses have to be real businesses and not rely on Govt. hand outs.

I Hope, worthy members have some comments on above proposals.

Subha Chand ji you have tried find a way out and that in itself is a testimony enough that there are people around in the vicinity, who are truthfuly and honestly devoted to the upliftment of lesser fortunate people related to us all by blood. This is an only silver lining which stops me from being outrightly negative. Things are really very bad and our society is in grip of so many ills that confusion and deperation is complete. Our people are loosing direction and are heading towards hopelessness. While we must sing our songs, we must also crtically examine the areas where our society has degenerated and must do something at the earliest before things become BEYOND ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL REPAIR. I must be excused for a slight diversion here [as the thread is employment related] to highlight some of the ills our society [latland] is in grip of:

1] Teachers don't teach at all [specially in govt schools]
2]Most of the Teachers are not qualified [how they got the job is anybody's guess]
3] When there is no motivation for the children, they too don't bother to pay any attention to their studies. Here i must mention that either way it is the child who has to pay a price for not getting educated because teachers draw their full pay round the year.
4] A very few can send their children to good schools away from villages and those who go out of village, never turn their faces back except for a few hours/days to change the taste of tongue.
5] Crowd in the villages is generally uneducated and parents/elders have no intertest/mechanism to monitor their children's activities and hence the youth is getting swayed towards drugs and crime.
6] worst is the condition of girl child and the grown up girls. There is no education towards basics of life for them. Unhygienic conditions prevailing there compounds the problem further. Correct guidance during adolescence is missing and they are supressed like animals still. I see no future for them except getting married at the tender age of 15/16 and deliver 4-5 children by the time she is 20-21. Real bad going ons.
7] Land holdings are dwindling and means of livelihood are shrinking. This in turn is putting pressure on our people to adopt dishonest means, thereby putting the moral fabric of our kaum to test as our people have started compromising with those absolute qualities for which jats are known. There is a large scale disgust, which is putting the delicate balance to great risk.
8] Elders once respected and heard with dignity are at the mercy of misguided young generation , there by making the atmosphere FREE FOR ALL.
9] Jobs are not there as youth is not qualified and hence they are not going out of the villages. Inturn they are becoming a liability on the already shrunk resources and pollutting the atmosphere of the villages.
10] Rassi jal gai hei lekin hamare gaon mei logon ki eithhan abhi bhi vaissi ki vaissi hei. Other casts have started hating them much more than what they ever did.

MORE ON THE TOPIC SUBSEQUENTLY............................to be contd.

One of the main cause is.....

Dear Deepender jee...

I belongs to village Prithla, Faridabad. District faridabad is treated badly by all the CM's so far in the history of Haryana(as per my experience in the recent years). Being one of the Biggest Industrial hub of haryana in the past, it was not taken care of properly by the administration, which has resulted in the shifting of Big Multinationals to a better budding place like gurgaon n nearby state - in Noida, Gr. Noida. This has created a lot of unemployment in the area, as nearby villagers use to earn by means of business generated thru these companies and the employement provided by these companies. And the acqusition of land by Govt. is still going on in the villages in Distt. Faridabad..... resulting in the loss of Farming land. Goverment is providing the money in lieu of Land, ITS GREAT BUT "WHAT ABOUT THE UNEMPLOYEMENT ITS CREATING BY AQUIRING THE LANDS". The young generation is totally disillusioned by the hefty amount they are getting but unaware of the fact that what will happen when the money will vanish slowly n gradually. The budding guys will not be exposed to hard work, due to which they will not be capable of working in the unfavourable conditions. Normal trend in many of the villages is that the families are ruined due to the bad habits acquired by the family heads, the money is spend in consuming alcohol, gambling and all.
The young generation is not at all ready to cope with the conditions, and when the money they got in lieu of land vanishes in due course of time.... they start doing the robbery, dacoity and other means by which they can get money bigger & faster. Though I'm not living in my village since my childhood, but has observed the things in due course of time that how the facets are changing.

So, I request the authorities to look into the matter seriously, as providing the money in lieu of land is not at all the solution, it'll not favour the nation in the coming years. MODERNISATION IS GOOD, BUT NOT AT THE COST OF YOUTH. The folk youth will remain unemployed and unemployment leads to crime.

Regards,
Inderjeet Singh Tanwar.

There is always a hope

Dear Dev ji and Inder ji,

Thank you very much for the message and kind words.
Despair does not help any one. If we are to do some thing for the community we have to start with a hope that things can be turned around. Invariably things do turn around when people have suffered enough and try to help themselves. That is what we can learn from history.

Jats are no stranger to hard work but their difficulty lies in handling the power which gets to their head faster than any other community. There are some excellent examples of young Jats doing marvellously for less fortunate brothers and sisters. I am not at liberty to disclose the identity but there is atleast one such Jat who has set himself a target to help atleast one Jat youth to secure employment every six months. He has been meeting those targets up to now and with the help from God and blessings from his well wishers he will go from strength to strength in his career and in life.

Others can learn from this. Let us hope our young politicians take notice of plight of educated and uneducated unemployed.:)

resource probs

Dear all namaste,

I would like to comment here on the proper use of resources in villages.

1.) In our villages peoples just use cow/buffalow dung as for making dung cakes, how many of them know that they can even use it for producing gas and that kinda stuff. My suggestion would be to build such plants in villages which would be of great help atleast for those native peoples of villages and even it can be of great help for villagers as they can be paid of in reply of dropping all the DUNG and other waste by providing them with gas and hot water facilities for little amount at their door steps and even some peoples from village can be given training about this kinda job.

2.) Again I was just wondering that for use of electricity I`ve seen in villages that most of the youth feel proud to be in AKHADAS, their power can be utilised with a good game like RUGBY and even it is a good game in terms of money as well and I bet that HARYANA can give many a lot good RUGBY players if provided with proper training.

3.) Regarding Deependar bhai`s SOLAR LIGHTS for village childrens thought I would like to say why not have a common room/library in every village/school, where only students should be allowed. AND even it would help in creating competition among all pupils in their.

WELL I would come again with some other worth ideas.

CHEERS and THANKS

An Excellent Topic

Dear Deepender,
An excellent topic to discuss. The response itself shows the commitment of the community and the importance it gives to this subject.
I have written a number of times about creating employment for rural youth while taking control of the agricultural produce system. We need to remove the middleman who makes more money than the framers for keeping the agriculture produce for a day or two in his godown. The question is how to do it.
The idea of VDO as suggested by Rajendra Ji is brilliant. I differ on this being only the honorary position. While having it a paid position may have its own pitfalls, having an honorary position may itself be a non starter. As far as politicization of the position is concerned, it will still be there even if it is an honorary position. A bad thing but true, and we have to live with it. All we need to do is to find a solution for it. Difficult as it may be, but surely each problem has more than one solution and with the think tank we have on this site, we may be able to find more than one.
I feel, the position could be performance based. The problem is of defining accountability. We can set up the annual goals for this position and evolve some system to monitor it. The annual balance sheet of the project could be the deciding factor. I can bring out the micro level details for this project as it has been in my mind since I was a school going kid in the village.
The biggest challange is to unite the people. I am sure a successful project would be able to do that.
As described by Lamba Ji, projects of bee farming or for that matter chicken or fish farming could be developed in the villages. In my own battalion in 1980 we made a small pond where we directed lunger's waste water containing the left over food, and created huge money in a year with extremely little investment. The area required was also not much. That was a raw project, but much more sophisticated projects can be developed in the villages. Most positions could be made on commission basis to give incentive to the people working on them. Distribution of milk, butter and other dairy products could be another project that can generate income as well as employment for the village youth.
The myth of being a BABOO has to be removed from the village youth as most of the people had been trying to get into government jobs to have an easy life, be it a police constable or a clerk in DC's office.
Monitoring the assets of these BABOO's could be another project that may require attention. (Not part of this topic though)
Dignity of the profession has to be understood by all of us and necessary education needs to be imparted among the village folks. The attitude of "Yo to sabji ka thela lagavai hai" needs to be done away with. We need to educate our folks with the quote "it is not what job a person does, but how well he does that job that matters"
Once again thanks a lot for raising a very pertinent topic. Our discussion on Rohtak Rural Convention was on the similar lines. The topic got lost in wilderness. We need to continue with that project. October 2006 could be a good time to do that as had been suggested by Rajendra Ji. We already have two members who want to do a lot for this convention. We can do a lot better by getting the message across. Let us all help Depender in this noble cause.

We are still dedicated and eady to go.....

Dear uncle ji,

Me and Mr. ABHI are still dedicated and looking forward to make this convention a success but we need a lot of help from you guys because of your experience and we need your guidlines too.

As for creating oppurtunities for rural YOUTH, to get themself self-employed is the only option or bottomline in this regard, so there is a need to start the project regarding self-employment. Some of the other ideas I had in my mind regarding this are:-

1) AGRICULTURE based on modren needs like agricultre of plants needed in HERBAL-DIESEL, which is a very profitable business as well, also agriculture of KHUMBI`s (mushroom) is not a bad idea.
But the problem lies in this is that in many parts of state peoples in villages don`t have enough land to do farming.

2) Plantation of olive trees is not a bad idea as well and even it won`t take too many efforts for it. As olives are exported to many countries, so govt. should help farmers in regard of this and contact companies around the world about how much their demand is and if this is profitable or not.

The main hurdle which comes on way is the fertility of land as well, so Govt. should have a commitee or a department with AGRICULTURE universities who can give tips to villagers of each and every region that "by doing farming of such and such crops or plants is suitable for their land" and tell them all the benifits of those crops. Also their is a need to follow up all the results.

cheers

Thanks for Quick Response

Dear Pammu,
The time if for youth to take over the reins of the community leadership. We can definitely will advise you all what ever way we can. I guess, you and Abhimanyu should get in touch with Deepender in order to organize this event. It needs to be apolitical to say the least. What we need to strengthen is Deepender's credentials among the public.
I will work out on the minor details of the projects that could be taken to regulate the distribution system of agricultural produce removing the middlemen. We do need a lot of support from public and this convention should aim at getting that. We have a very rich think tank over here and I am sure we can do a good job.

Col. Sahab, Nothing can change the plight of Jat Youths untill they realise
"Shram ka mahtav"( Dignity of Labour).

I have some first hand information about Building Industry in and around Delhi, specially in Haryana. Most of the trade people engaged in trades like plumbing, carpentry, brick laying, white wash and paint/ polish etc. come from eastern UP and Bihar. Most of their thekedaars are from those areas only and with no formal education in the respective trade. They started as acasual labour and with sheer hardwork and dedication they have mastered their trades.

Couldn,t our jat youths do that. Our youths when young do not educate themselves in those trades because that wouldn,t get them govt jobs and on later stage it is below their dignity to start as a labour. They will have to understand and believe in the 'dignity of labour'.Sarkaari naukri ke lalach ko bhoolna hoga.

Pammu Bhai, projects like Gobar Gas plant, fishery and mushroom plantation etc.failed to take off in villages due to failure of monitoring or lack of technical guidance. Finaces for these projects was mostly from Cooperative banking which no proper auditing of funds being spent.

Wish you all the success for the meet and hope that it comes out with some positive results that would provide a solid platform for Rural Development.
