Worthy members, as we all know that inspite of our land holdings and almost complete dominance of the rural economy in past, what went wrong in last 30 to 40 years that Jats have been pushed to a dark corner. Punjabis came to India in 1947 and within these 57 odd years they have amassed wealth of unbelievable proportions[they deserve it by all means as they played their cards well and were street smart], where as the JATS who provided shelter and food to these Punjabis initially are in bad economic shape. Are we slow to learn, easily satisfied, Don't dream or use foresight,Lack basics of business sense, our attitude is harsh..................WHAT YOU FEEL IS THE REASON THAT MAJORITY OF JATS ARE NOT DOING WELL IN THE FIELD OF ECONOMICS.

There is only one reason for any community's success: Enterprise.

Be enterprising. Never think you have enough. Keep aspiring for more. You may call it greed. I call it the quest for exploring the extremes.

Many Reasons...

There are many reasons. Please pardon me should they be too harsh to accept.

1. Typical JAT attitude of not accepting anyone better than themselves.
2. An air of INVINCIBILITY that is inherited, generation after generation. Apne te bada kise ne sochte e na. Same here.
3. RELUCTANCE to take up business and restricting to only 'Fauj', 'Police', 'Haryana Roadways', 'DTC', 'Bijli Daftar' etc.
4. A sense of SHAME in starting small ventures, shops etc. Why? Log ke kahenge, ke phalane ka potaa susra dukan kar rhya se.
5. Unwilling to accept or should I say tolerate the success even within own community. Hogs susra DC apne ghar mein!!
6. Failure to IMBIBE positives of others experiences, even in farming.
7. Not accepting anyone as a LEADER. Saare leader hain.
8. ABANDONMENT of villages by all those who shifted to towns. Of course they only return to take their share of sale proceeds and give lectures.
9. A basic hatred towards JATS by Brahmins, Banias & SCs.
10. INABILITY to become a single votebank. Har ek gaam mein kam se kam teen, char gut sein.
11. Not educating and trusting daughters. Ke kare gi padh ke, agle saal byah dein ge.

However, there are exceptions too.

Regards,

JS Malik

Malik Sahab,

You are 100% right and this leads to the next logical question. How to address the problems in our community? Es bimari ka koi ilaaz hai ya fir yeh lailaaz hai?

Lead...

RK Ji,

It’s a vicious circle really. We have to first agree that we have failed as a community and accept that we do have a serious problem that threatens our very existence. This I presume would be the first step before we even think of the ‘ilaaz’. The more we think about this problem, nearer we would get to the solution.

I believe some of us, if not all, MUST get back to the villages and live there to experience the problems firsthand. I know it is extremely difficult to go back to a village that has none of the basic facilities that one has got used to or takes for granted. Then the next challenge is to convince the people there that you are there for a purpose and not to become their ‘Sarpanch’. Then the community in the village, all castes and creeds have to be brought on the same platform to agree that the problems they face are COMMON to all. Doing only this much would take a lifetime I presume.

Taking that the individual is able to do this quickly the next big challenge is even more insurmountable. Provision of affordable education to all kids, primary health facilities (so that women don’t die during childbirth), clean drinking water, improving the hygiene conditions, trying to get the village to start converting to solar & wind energy devices, cash crop farming, getting back to traditional culture & customs (meaning ONE FOR ALL AND ALL FOR ONE) and million other things. And while all this is going on, one has to ensure that each person is kept abreast with what is happening in the world outside, I mean benefiting from modern communication means. The AIM: A villager should not get intimidated by a English speaking ‘Bhaand’ in a city and our TAU should be able to send an E Mail to his grandchildren.

The MISSION IMPOSSIBLE is to convince the people that IT CAN BE DONE.

The space here does not permit me to give details of HOW IT CAN BE DONE. But I am convinced it can be done. We are lucky to be occupying one of the most fertile land in the world and I have no doubt that FEW GOOD MEN & WOMEN can convince those left behind that we can all work together to ensure a better tomorrow. Some of us have to leave our comfort zones and get back. It is PAYBACK time. And there is also no other way. Those who are fortunate enough to contribute have to contribute with ‘Tan’, ‘Man’ and ‘Dhan’, all three. This has to be grass root approach. I have said N number of times that one has to individually make sacrifices to FORCE CHANGE for a better future for out community and no amount of get-togethers, conferences, mission statements and seminars are going to make a difference.

I think we have discussed these issues a hundred times and would keep doing so for years on end. I know discussion is good but it is time to lead and meet the challenge head on, instead of waiting something to happen.

JS Malik

Thank you Malik Sahab. I fully agree with you views on the subject and have been one of those who are planning to move back to my village. Hope you will take some time off once a while to join my efforts and address the rural folks. If we can make a team of 5-10 persons, that will surely make some dent.

RK Ji,

Bas thodi poonch atki huyi hai varna mein ye reply ek gaam se de raha hotaa.

I shall dedicate myself totally in the Rural JATLAND, full time, starting Jul/Aug 2006. And since I am settled in Meerut, Shamli is not far off at all. I have enough relatives there too. I promise you here and today that I shall surely offer my services to your hospital, in whatever little way I can.

Yes, we need to make a team. Ek ek hafta bhi ek gaam me laga diya to bahut logon ka bhala hoga.

JS Malik

No problem Malik Sahab. Even I will be moving back to India only next year in April. Team of committed persons will certainly send a strong message among rural folks and I am sure they would listen to us. Let us hope we get some more highly committed persons.

Dear Col Malik,
Beautifully covered. You are bang on Target. We see this attitude some times on this site as well, even though very well educated members of the community are participating on various discussions. My fear is by pointing out all these weaknesses some one might not doubt about your's or any one supporting your views as "NON JAT" Attribute of our personality? I think we need to come out of all these evils that has affected our community adversely.

Really Nobe cause for the community

Very well Covered By Col. Malik
Pls refer to the point no. 1 & 4 of Col Maliks Observation. if we can cover these two points than I feel most of the problems can be solved. If youth community in Jats could throw the typical Jat attitude from their Minds and can be motivated towards the self employment then only we can grow.

Ek Punjabi ya Baniya ka 8vi main padheniya chorra khlai time main dukan pe baitha pavaga ya pher koi bi part time job karat pavaga

I feel shamefull telling you all people about what I observed in Rohtak(being a Education Hub in the area) that college boys coming from various villages to city for studies and just passing their time by playing cards & watching movies in theatres and simply blowing off the hard money earned by their parents.

Where as if any one of you get a chance to travel by local trains from various nearby NCR places(Jats dominated Rohtak,Bhiwani,Sonipat,Rewari, Merrut) to Delhi. You will find most of the daily passenger are non- Jats and of the agegroup of 16-25 years involved in small-2 trading business & earning some good money (at least for themselves). So it is very important to motivate our Community’s youth generation about Self employment.

I will feel proud to be a part of this noble cause.

Jitni ban padagi utni karan main kasar nahi rakhange

Thanks & Regards
Pankaj Balhra

Col. Malik has hit the nail on its head. The situation is further aggravated by the fact that an average jat on receipt of money will go to a "theka", get drunk and fight with his own people. Most of the parents of marriageable boys behave as if their son is the reincarnation of Alexander and the girls of whole jat community at their feet asking for asylum. Those who manage to reach at some comfortable level will never help or guide his fellow jats as there is, I think, a fear lurking in his mind that if others also did good nobody will respect him. To me, most of the well placed jats are even worse than Indian politicians. Those in the villages are no better as they always keep their noses skywards and won't budge from the beaten track for the sake of chaudharahat. "thotha chana baje ghana".

I think Sehrawatji this quote of yours is misleading " Most of the parents of marriageable boys behave as if their son is the reincarnation of Alexander and the girls of whole jat community at their feet asking for asylum"
It can apply bothways. Parents of girls also behave likewise.

Very well said Sehrawat ji, and there is an old saying about Jats -

" Jaan mare baniya ....Pichan mare Jaat .."

Even after recognising a person, Jat turn his eyes to prevent that guy ...though there is no loss of his in talking or helping but its matter of Grudge only.

A few more traits

1] Can make enemies with ease[ infact it is our hobby]
2] Refinement is a word we tend to hate
3] Generally are in habit of getting carried away by instigations, without even bothering to verify the facts.
4] Double standards
5] Very aggressive initially but once snubed, take no time in getting into the shell.

i have ben trying to think anout an answer to " what went wrong with jats" since last 15 years and i have failed terribly... cause i just can't think of wats right with them .. everthing seems to be wrong .. whatever l'le exposure i have of the community no body seems to be doing well and those who are doing well dont even seem to acknowledge the fact that they are Jats... in Delhi three departments are famous DDA DTC and Delhi police .. all are full of Jats and most often a subject of mockery. its difficult to put up a proud face in public which i always do .. . can't we learn to work hard, and not live off our ancestral lands , can we do something other than the "Property Dealing".. this is strictly a DELHI JAt attitude..
wish i could get some sense hammered into thier heads.

Damn on target Jagmohan sir! I acknowledge all your points :)

This is the best possible description of a typical Jat. And we love to be Jattu :D

Ghar-ghar neta, chhori hai - padee reh, ego, ignorance and all!!

Can we hope to reach greater heights with all this? Exactly not!!

Bahut samay lagegaa abhi - ye sabh kuchh badalnein mein :o

Dear Swaty,

Even I have also failed terribly to understand "what went wrong with jats" :D

So, please don't take everything -ve and wait for the day - when "all Jats will be right" :)

I am also so much 'baked-up' that I don't expect any good/favour from Jats I encounter in public deptts. in Delhi - as mentioned by you (Oh!! I even have to bribe them, every time I face them :D). No exceptions dear

Once my Bike was picked-up from a 'No Parking' zone. I went to the PS. I was asked to either pay Rs. 50 (their flat rate :) ) or have a (white) reciept of Rs 100. I asked him "Jat ki koi sharam nahin?" That guy said "Munirka waalon ko kya kami hai, bahut muaawja mila hua hai" and asked for Rs. 50 only or have a receipt. I simply took a receipt of Rs. 100/- and went away with my Bike.:p Akhir main bhi Jat tha - aur kya karta?

I know, this is strictly a DELHI Jat attitude...but, there are some more things we can do - other than "Property Dealing" are - "Property Development" or have a "Printing Press" ;). Jats are also trying their best to work hard

Please don't try to hammer a Jat's head - all his/her intelligence is inside that only  Even yours and mine :D

Take care!!

Too much bashing unnecessary

Tokas Bhai, Jgmohan sir, it is good to wish for the upliftment of community. But it is not that bad as depicted here. There are some good examples as well. But as they say in software there is always room for improvement.
I had some good exp with Delhi police...
I went to Delhi train station and on way near CP, I missed the exit from one circle. As it was early morning around 5 AM so not much traffic., I stopped and tool little reverse instead of completeing the whole circle. DP gipsy was there and they got it close to me and were ready to give me tiket. I just said in Jattu "Err parene e te jana se, er hade traffic bhee konna" I could see the smile on their faces and rest is bye bye.
They could have given me tiket easily and I was at fault
Err Bhai Jats are trying there best in other areas as well, it is not only in property dealing. Many jats are trying in other business as well, but as we hope for we need to do more...
Jagmohan sir I beg to differ little on ego part "In my opinion some ego is good and every jat should have it" This keep us separate from rest, especialy punjus....
