What's wrong with BJP?

All the current popular anger is against Congress and justifiably so. Congress deserves all the brickbats, but it is a pity that despite Congress being so weak, BJP looks no where close to forming the next govt at the center. It is a house in shambles that can't even take advantage of anti-incumbency. Some reasons in my opinion are:

- Lack of any alternative to Vajpayee's leadership. Vajpayee carried the NDA through - other parties trusted him. There is no one else in BJP that has same image with either masses or other parties.

- Indecision on leadership. When BJP says there are many prime ministerial candidates, it just means they can't be decisive. The opposition to Modi comes as much from outside as inside. I am not a Modi fan, but if they have to try him, they should do it and move on if it does not work.

- Lack of any agenda. In early 90s, there was a clear hindutva agenda. That gave them a headstart but BJP understood that it can't take them beyond it. So under Vajpayee, they tried to become a true right-wing party. Now BJP has abandoned that too. Their stand on any issue is to oppose the govt and to stall the parliament. Their stand on nuclear deal and FDI in retail (that were their own policies) shows that. They also keep going on and off hindutva which is well past its sell by date. Instead, they should have come up with an alternative vision for India and sold it to people.

I feel that BJP has become weaker. In fact, it's not only BJP but all opposition parties have become weaker, be it in Haryana, UP, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, etc. non of the opposition members are in position to stand up and say "enough is enough". The worst case is that of UP CM, she is being continuously hounded and screwed at every nook and corner by Congress, her party is still an outside supporter of the central government.

The only time I found some courage was at the time of special parliament session on LakPal bill. Sushma Sawraj's speech was quite bold and reflection of ground realities. However, press did not gave much coverage to it. The speeches of that special session are available on the internet if someone wants to go through them.

Wrong with BJP: May be May not be??

1. While certainly not all is well with BJP, but it is made out much more than what actually it is: Thanks to media. An analogy: there is hardly anything in Rahul but still he has been projected (rather successfully) as "somebody with a substance"..

2. There have been concerted efforts to ensure that BJP is not benefitted even in the present favorable condition. Congress spin doctors have realised that they can't undo the damage done to the congress, so they are focussing only on two things: A. To keep Gandhi family's reputation intact and B. To ensure BJP is not benfitted.

3. Needless to say that all the potential PMs in BJP forsee a fare edge in the current situation and have staked renewed claims to the post. This certainly caused friction.

4. BJP has tried to sway from hard hindutva and move to soft hindutva. They are trying hard to project a nationalist and development driven agenda as their core strenghth, but largely hostile media, ensures that this agenda does not get the requisite visibility. This can be termed as lack of political acumen on BJPs part that they are not enable to manage if not all but even a section of media. Not to forget that, BJP fights all its elections on Development Plank, whereas Congress takes refuge on giving alms and so called secularism ete etc.

5. FDI was a smoke bomb by the government to distract attention. There are larger issues which need far more urgent attention than FDI. BJP saw an orgnaised baniya community a potential vote bank and scuttled the FDI move. If Congress can get to the level of Food Security, Loan Waiver and NAREGA like bills which fall short of their objective but do bleed the economy for the sake of vote bank, then BJP did a congress on FDI.

I feel that BJP could be more aggressive though and project LK Advani (If he is hale and hearty by the election time), 'coz only he has larger acceptance in NDA, let Modi be his deputy and get more acceptance.

While BJP may appear to be week, but do not forget that the maximum benefit share of JP andolan was extracted by BJP-RSS by rebranding themselves..so they may appear to be naive and raw, but, in actual sense, they may be at their wittiest best by ceding space to Anna in an hostile media environ and then hijacking the benefits of Anna Andolan.. Just a speculation..wish that it turns out to be true..and we have at least two comparable political forces in india.

Most of the points have been covered by various brothers, I would like to add few more:-
a) Mr Advani is certainly a negative force going aginst the BJP.
b) Lack of unity
c) Lack of ability to rule, public has seen them last time, they can talk well but weak in execution
d) Weak party president
e) No solid/permanant policy/agenda to workon.
f) Yougth wing has gone very weak.
g) lack of sincerity with collition partners.
h) For small gains at many occasions, they have helped congress directly/indirectly, Infact so far policy of BJP had been to marginelise/finish reasonal parties to become alternative to the congress but failed to become hope of public and finished many reasonal parties and unity of opposition.
i) The fact is that BJP is party of business class/upper castes (brahamin, bania, punjabi and rajput) or atlist it carries a tag of business class/upper castes, is also a draw back.
j) BJP leaders are equally corrupt and donot know sensible way to collect money.
k) The public have already seen their result to do any worth for Hindus, rather during BJP rule Hindus got disorganised and minorities got organised and benifitted.

Agree with problems discussed in above posts. Congress' loss should be BJP's gain but its not happening.

Biggest problem with BJP is lack of leadership. Party presidents after LK Advani have been very weak. Its senior leadership is ageing and second line leaders do not have unity between themselves. All are working to promote themselves and not the party. There is a sense of lack of leadership in whole BJP and more specifically in lower cadres. It seems that BJP has got many groups in itself.
They have to project unity to come up as an alternative of congress. Its the best time for BJP to project itself as a national party with a vision.

Very rightly summarized Jakhar sir.

Vikas,

The point here is not who to vote for - BJP or Congress. I am quite convinced about voting for BJP, not because I like it, but because Congress needs to be voted out. But my problem is that I have to choose BJP because of TINA (there is no alternative) rather than any sort of liking for them.

I don't buy any media conspiracy theories. I have read enough critical articles on Rahul Gandhi. In fact, there are quite a few "right-wing" commentators who should be natural sympathisers of BJP, but are sick of the mess it is in. The fact the BJP keeps going back to "soft hindutva" shows that it can't make up its mind on basing its agenda solely on pro-development or good governance. FDI may have been a smoke bomb from the govt., but when I am looking just at BJP's behavior, it gives me no comfort that the self-proclaimed "party with a difference" can do a volte-face on its own government's policies (Nuclear deal, FDI, etc.). So good luck for BJP if all its actions vis-a-vis irresponsible behavior and Anna's movement are part of a grand political strategy, but that doesn't make me feel any good about them. What's the positive change I can expect from them over Congress? All the reasons for change from Congress are due to negatives of Congress than any sort of hope from BJP.

yeah yeah

Yeah, I agree to a certain extent. But, before the things get into oblivion due to the verbosity of my response, let me mention points on two specifics o FDI and Nuclear Liability:

Nuclear: If am not wrong, Nuclear Deal Bill was more of a Nuclear ‘Supplier’ Liability Bill: BJP wanted a strong bill to ensure sufficient supplier liability in the eventuality of an accident, this was true more in the context of Bhopal Tragedy. Am not saying that you are not aware of this. But all of us get carried away in the din of managed media debates. Media hardly took any pain to discuss the fine prints of the bill about “limited” liability of the suppliers. The majority of the discussion moved around the energy needs of booming India and how nuclear energy is the most efficient way to fulfill the need. The liability part was discussed but mostly in inner pages or subtext of the papers. There also, hardly any space was given to the opposition’s views, below is one of those rare links that clarifies that BJP did not oppose for the sake of opposition.

FDI: 2004 ‘NDA NOT BJP’ manifesto talked about 26% FDI, prior to 2009 election ‘BJP’ Manifesto clearly opposed the FDI..(Had BJP been opposing for the sake or had no reason whatsoever, there was no need to mention this in manifesto!). Also, 51% Vs 26% makes a lot of difference, no brainer to guess who controls what in which case. Backend infrastructure investment is already allowed : e.g. Bharati Walmart is already operational in India with Walmart as backend,, same is true about TARGET etc. Everynews channel flashed a headline that BJP did a volte face on FDI just to oppose govt, talked about 2004 Manifesto and conveniently omitted the 2009 one.
Besides, BJP clearly mentioned that they are not against FDI in every sector and in fact mentioned various sectors that they allowed FDI in like insurance etc. I do agree with you that self proclaimed right wingers and conservative writers like Swapan Das Gupta gave brickbats to BJP for this stand, but they agreed that the BJP's opposition was not for the sake of it.
I agree that we should not vote for BJP for the sake of TINA factor and BJP also should not project itself merely as Congress Alternative.

But above two incidents do show that BJP has been victim of media bias. A simple Test is to observe most of the channels for 5-10 days, especially the chats shows, you would see a trend to outsmart BJP.

That said, this does not mean that BJP has no issues, leadership issue looms large on their face esp due to imminent factionalism if any one is chosen chosen above others. Also, sometimes I feel that they have been ruling in if not more that at least in equal number of states as that by congress and have not yet gathered enough muscle power to be assertive in media, but don’t you think that when we expect them to control media, we want them to do a congress to media. Then we will say that where is the “Difference” in the “party with a difference”.

The least we can be assured and relieved is that BJP at least follows internal democracy and works through task force and does annual performance review of its CMs- The things alien to Congress culture.

Five steps to a revitalized Brand BJP

It is boring to watch anything one-sided — from a wrestling bout to a cricket match. Indian politics is facing a similar situation. The BJP is turning out to be the weakest political opponent we have had in a long time. It is boring to be an observer in Indian politics. Also, it is terrible for the nation to not have a good alternative.
This is despite the Congress doing numerous self-goals in the past two years. Scam after scam, a borderline civil unrest, rampant inflation, a smug and silent leadership and a first family that is either complicit or does not know what is going on — even if the BJP planted insiders in the Congress, they could not have engineered so many debacles.

ill, the BJP could not work the tide in its favor. People are not warming up to it. This despite having earnest BJP spokespersons, who come on TV everyday and tell us the following: Sonia Gandhi is Italian (for the nine millionth time), all Congress decisions are made by madam and everyone in the Congress party has an account in Switzerland.

Yes, there is resentment against the government, but few think that the BJP will be any better. The recent government missteps could have been a lifetime's opportunity for the BJP — to not only come back to power, but also stay there and expose all corrupt Congress leaders. But it has been a PR disaster, showing that while the BJP is extraordinarily high-pitched with anti-Congress rhetoric, it has no real answers, no convictions, no leadership and, scarily, no grip on the pulse of the people.
The biggest evidence of this came from the Yeddyurappa situation. Many had told them months ago to get rid of him. Well, they kept him there, giving convoluted logic ranging from 'he is immoral, not corrupt' to 'we are less corrupt than the Congress'. If the BJP had preemptively removed him, it would have signaled a resolve to fight corruption. Today, they come across as losers.
The BJP's failure is also sad because to a certain extent, it represents non-dynasty politics. If they can't make it work, it means India still is not ready to be weaned off the Gandhi family, and we prefer our kings and princes to a real democracy. Something is clearly wrong. Here are some suggestions the BJP may want to consider as a matter of urgency.

One, stop criticizing the Congress. We are sick of hearing how terrible the Congress is. We know. Instead, talk about what you are offering instead. As a policy, the BJP should not denigrate the other party beyond a point. It is counterproductive. The next time someone tells me Sonia Gandhi is Italian, i am going to throw pizza at his face. Grow up, please.

Two, choose your PM candidate and tell us. Do not make statements like 'we have many capable PM candidates'. Sorry to burst your bubble, but you do not. Some of your senior leaders neither have the poise nor the aspirational, globalized Indian personality that the youth are seeking in their leader. This generation is used to the current PM, who, for all his flaws, is educated and graceful. Some of the top BJP leaders scream too much. They are crass, regressive and lack modern thought to inspire a young person. They cannot and will not become the PM of this nation. Wake up, face the reality, bring out the other good BJP leaders to the front.

Three, if you claim to represent the Hindu cause, do it with grace. It is true that in the name of secularism, the Hindu voice is often subverted. However, it doesn't mean we criticize other communities for the same. Some of the most revered Hindu shrines are poorly maintained. Temples at Mathura and Varanasi are filthy and full of touts. The young generation does not want to go there anymore. Why not clean them up? Why not show your love for Hinduism by doing something positive within the community, rather than find flaws in others.

Four, start an operation cleanup. There are a significant number of corrupt politicians in every party, including the BJP. Every year, remove the top-10% most corrupt leaders, and bring in new honest individuals. In ten years, you will have a different, fresh party.

Five, be the torchbearer of the new India— a society where truth, equality and justice have stature above power. Frankly, without these values, a democracy cannot work. We have to carve out new values for the Indian society. Concepts such as equality and justice are alien to most Indians. Who is going to uphold these values and lead us into the future?
If the BJP listens, and acts, they can come back strong. If they don't, they risk losing something more than an election — they risk losing their relevance. As Yeddy packs up, I hope the BJP will reflect on what could save them from packing up. If they don't, well, we always have the queen and the prince.

Mulayam Singh Yadav
Jayalalitha
Mayawati
Karunanidhi
Shibu Soren
Lalu Prasad Yadav
Ram Bilas Paswan
Bal Thakrey
n the latest...

Kuldeep Bishnoi

.....................and so on.

BJP is suffering from Indecisiveness

parsthiti jo bhi ho.. lekin agar congress ki arrogancy aur taashahi se desh ko nikalana hai to BJP ko majboot karna padega... nikat bhavishya mein aur koyi vikalpa nahi hai... ib yo janta ne sochna hai ek kisi palanhaar ka wait karein ya jo best option available hai usko utilize karein...
