Really unfortunate incidents; guilty must be punished by the court.
However media (especially ToI) 'reporting' on the issue is pathetic say the least... not following the very basic principle of journalism shows how 'professional' our media is!!
----------------------
Two similar incidents and Media's role (and aftermath):
1. 2005 Gohana case: whole India 'know' about this issue... it was presented in such a way as if Dalit are victim of JAT's dominance in Haryana.
Yes, it was wrong to burned down the murderer's house and may be it was media's duty to report the incident. No issues here.
2. There was another incident of 'burning down a house' last year:
i don't remember the exact details. But it happened something like this:
One young couple (from West Bengal) had a jewellery shop in Bangalore; their servant, who was working with them for quite a while, planned to rob them. He and two of his friends went to the shop owner's house (they knew that the guy keep cash and some jewellary at home and that day Lady was supposed to be alone as the husband was out of station). Unfortunately, the shop owner was there too, he came early or something.
Anyways, they went ahead and killed the couple and also their 5-6 year old daughter who returned from school when they were inside house (smothered her with a pillow)!!
This incident was a first page story in most newspaper.
After a few days police cracked the case and the murderer, who was a local, was arrested.
Now, angry people from the locality burned down the murderer's house. This was not a major news (published in states-news-page in Indian Express, few lines and no dramatic theme or picture). I don't know if somebody from the 'mob' was arrested or not.. as no paper followed the case after that.
----------------------------
I could not help but to relate these two incidents. In both cases, a house was burnt down by angry people. In both case, the house was of a murderer. (well, no caste angle was reported by the media, so don't know if the 'mob' and murderer were of same caste or not.)
But in one case, Media made it look-like the oppression of Dalits by Jats and what was the result of that: Needless to say, SCs across the country were agitated. Road-jam in many cities, Haryana Roadways buses were burned in Punjab. and the image of Jats was tainted !
I had long (and heated) discussion with southies at my institute that time, had really tough time in explaining that cast- situation is not 'that' bad in Haryana. I joined institute around that time and seniors first question were related with that incident.
Surprisingly, in the later case, there was no news in most papers, no furore among tv-intellectuals, no procession, most importantly no buses were burned down!!
What kind of journalism is this? If few Jats are involved in any incidents, It is portrayed as if whole community behave is like that, few criminals are portrayed as the face of whole community. You click on 'Jats' tag in times of India.. every news will be either murders or caste-feuds or honor killing !!
I really wonder, why only in some cases, caste of the parties is mentioned;
in rest it is just x murder y,
Or a girl was murdered by her brothers. But if it Jats, It will be mentioned: a JAT GIRL.. and invariably either the Fatwa by Talibani Khap or Fear of Khaps. How come??
Every now and then there are gang (rowdies) fights in Karnataka/AP but nobody will mention their castes,... just rowdies x or rowdies y!!
But if it includes Jats, ToI (even those published from Bangalore) WILL mention JATs did that. Latest fashion is Honor Killings.
2 Days back news was: Soni, 18 yrs old JAT girl, spent night in a village school with her lover xyz from other caste (same village, in Rajasthan) and around morning jumped in WELL (fear from Khap , not her parents, please mind !)
Many Jatlanders have said many times that 'refugee' dominated media is against Jats and things like that. Frankly speaking, i always thought that members are going overboard... there can NOT be any conspiracy against Jats and probably it is more of sensationalizing the issue rather than intention of showing JATs in bad light.
After many such cases of inappropriate and biased reporting , i have little doubt that certain sections of media (-men,-women) have 'bad blood' with Jats, whatever be the reasons. Probably some members saw it before me!!
