Taare Zameen Pae!

What a movie!

Really one creative movie... unique, first of it's kind in Bollywood, clean, thoughtful and thought provoking, very intriguing, deeply poignant, even funny, educative and simply marvelous!...

The little actor steals the thunder directly from under Aamir Khan's feet, I feel... But that's not to say Aamir doesn't deliver a mule-kick of a performance in this directorial venture of his!

All the songs [by music director's Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy]are simply superb (In particular listen to the one that is titled,...'Maa' :o)

I would say after a long time one Movie that totally deserves a mention under this 'Creative' movie's thread! (Especially considering since some people are getting so particular/picky about only mentioning the creative ones here..... ;))

It made me cry...finally we have a child artist who can give will smith's son a run for his money :) [not to take anything away- both father and son were superb in -'The Pursuit of Happyness'].

Eastern Promises

Had read a nice review about the movie in NYT. Came to know that it has earned an Academy nomination (for Best Actor). Went for it the day it released here and guess what...it's an absolute waste of money!

The movie is about Russian mafia in London, a la Godfather. Throw in prostitutes and Soviet style spies and you have quite an unconvincing plot that just falls woefully short of heightened expectations.

You may still go for it at your own peril but the flick is not certainly for the faint-hearted. Throats slit open and fingers cut, there are a few profoundly disturbing scenes.

Avoid it, if you can.

PS: If you are still scratching your head over why I quoted Priti in this post, it was just to welcome her on homecoming. Her thread after all.

I was about to wrestle with you on calling pursuit of happiness a waste of money (having read only the first paragraph of the post and not having read the title:o) but it turned out that you're talking about that blood curdling, no consequence, no climax movie...I was thrilled by the promos but the movie really fizzled out...so I second this review (unless you want to see men covered ONLY in tattooes fighting till death in sauna)....hoping against hope, during the movie i really wished it was more bollywoody- that the baby would grow up and revenge his mother giving the movie some spice...but that was that...hoping against hope...

P.S: thanks for the welcome, this is my favourite thread on the entire www.

3:10 to Yuma!

... Yaaaa! The westerns are back! (my first true cinematic love, farnkly! No wonder I love our good ol' Sholay so much too... the fact that our biggest hit was clearly inspired by that whole denim, horseback, western influence is quite unmistakable! "Yae haath nahee fansee ka phanda hain!")...

Anyways, what a COOL western this 3:10 to Yuma is, and I enjoyed it thouroughly!
Russel Crowe and Christian Bale are at their absolute brooding, sometimes humorous, laconic best!!!...
Bale being the 'traditional' hero of the movie, with Crowe playing the other 'traditional' baddie, but if you know your westerns- you would agree that there is such a thin line characterizing anyone good or bad in those wild west times.... and in the end you can take your pick who you liked better!
It is a fast paced, no-brainer, adrenalin rush caper!

Frankly, all i am trying to say is- what fuel this was for that good ol' western shoot-em-up parched eyes!!!...

ps. ... and oh on a separate note- I somehow ended up enjoying Eastern promises, Kabir... cause I guess I do like the whole mafia kind thrillers by default too, and more so cause maybe it reminded me so much of our own Bollywood potboilers! That whole larger than life cruel but now aging underworld don straddled with the useless son, who incidentally is out to prove a point to the ol' man and all that!... the movie did finish kind of abruptly agreed, but maybe then there is hope for a sequel (?)...
[Priti, Maybe the kid will grow up and try to take vengeance out on the new Don by mistaken identity???...and we have a thriller on our hands! :D]

But anyways, in the end the fact that the movie has the stunning Naomi Watts in there pretty much wraps up the deal for me completely! ;)

Into The Wild!!

Hi All

Watched 'Into The Wild' recently and I must say its a Class Act; Directed by Sean Penn & Soundtrack given by Great Eddie Vedor (Pearl Jam)!!

Direction by Sean Penn and Music by Eddie are splendid and certainly makes you Feel, if you remember both got together in Dead Man Walking as well.. :)

The engrossing true-life drama of an idealistic young man who yearns to live alone in the Alaskan wilderness and to reap the soulful benefits of solitude in the spirit of Thoreau.

Synopsis: Jon Krakauer's bestselling nonfiction book about the life of Chris McCandless is finally brought to the big screen in INTO THE WILD. Directed by Sean Penn, the film opens in 1992, when Chris (Emile Hirsh) is a promising college graduate. Shortly after graduation, Chris gives his life savings to charity, burns all of his identification, and begins hitchhiking across America, his ultimate goal being Alaska. Citing passages from his heroes, Thoreau and Jack London, he is determined to escape society and get back to nature. He blows from town to town like a tumbleweed, hopping trains, camping with aging hippies (Catherine Keener and Brian Dierker), working briefly with a farmer (Vince Vaughan), and befriending a widowed leather worker (Hal Holbrook). He revels in his newfound freedom, but meanwhile, his parents (Marcia Gay Harden and William Hurt) have no idea where he is, and are sick with worry. While their relationship with Chris was already troubled, they are nonetheless devastated by his disappearance. Chris's sister, Carine (Jane Malone), narrates much of the film, offering her reflections on the effect Chris's absence has on his family. Chris finally makes it to Alaska, where he hikes out to a remote campsite and discovers an abandoned bus. He manages to survive there for a few months living off the land, but he eventually runs out of supplies and becomes trapped, leading to his tragic end. INTO THE WILD bounces around chronologically, jumping back and forth from the start of Chris's journey to his final few weeks living aboard the bus. This works to great effect as the storylines begin to merge and the tension and dread mount, and we see the fate that will eventually befall Chris. Penn obviously had great admiration for his subject, and while the film appears to differ from the book in places, it nevertheless paints a heartbreaking portrait of this young man's short but fascinating life!

A Must Watch, I say.

Rock on

There will be blood

Hey

Never really enjoyed westerns, never figured out whats the big deal about guns, horses and sheriffs! now tis maybe a call for you to explain why so many guys love westerns, what is so good about them??

I watched there will be blood sometime back, its not the usual cinemagoer fare. Few dialogues but good ones. Would recommend it only to people who who like to watch something different especially ones who are interested in the extractive sector. With a single guy, it shows what gold rush, oil rush, minerals rush is all about - passion and madness. What resources can do to an community but not in as straightforward a way as I'm putting it. The guy is obviously brilliant in his acting, I'm told he's usually brilliant in whatever few commercial movies he does (is more of a theatre person).

Some of movies that i ignored but want to watch now because of the oscar hype are Juno and No country for old men. Anyone seen these? Would be good to have some views on these...

Hey

Never really enjoyed westerns, never figured out whats the big deal about guns, horses and sheriffs! now tis maybe a call for you to explain why so many guys love westerns, what is so good about them???...

Alright… let me see if I can decipher this any way tangibly!

Westerns are quite usually called as very slow, dusty, violent, backcountry and even racist and sexist… BUT then, mostly by women (now look who's being a sexist!) Ha! Ha!
But never... mind you, never-ever by the dudes… (at least not the ‘real’ dudes; these days there are many who, and to say it just like our Jit does- "Bahaut hain jo westerns ka bare mein es baat ko mane-gay nahee!") ;)…

so Why, you say?

Because where else would you find out and out the total macho-swagger, a sleepy moment now turning into sudden gun-fight action the next, Horses (that were the old version of a guy's bike or car... never mess with a guys bike or car!) that are the faithful companions that you ride off on into the sun with and even to the end of the inhospitable desert with....
The whole ensemble? The leather chaps, boots, gun belt slung low on the waist, the western cowboy hat!?! I mean come-on, do I need to even say more?...
The perpetual dangerous Red-Indians, the savages that attack like banshees onto those wagon trains that are trudging to unknown, unchartered, and un-civilized frontiers just like some Indiana Jones adventure....

It's the whole thing together that makes it so palatable...

As one would point out that Clint Eastwood became a cult figure because of this, and even before him John Wayne did something that makes him stand next to the likes of the modern one-man armies like Sylvester 'Rambo' Stallone in silver screen history!

These western action heroes did not have some modern, self-repeating rifles and machine guns to carry them thru a bad corner, but just a six-gun shooter and the skill to reach, draw and shoot all in one blur of a moment, the fraction that separated life and death! Men walked around armed and ready at all times! Imagine!!!... (the romance with guns that has unfortunately still not bated for the regular American male!)... the whole tension in the air that is only broken by the swirling dust and high-noon street shoot-out!

These cowboys, shootists, and gunslingers were rugged, suave and laconic all at the same time, turning on the imagination even of the likes of all Marlboro men!....

... I mean, I can go on and on.... but for now,
Does that help??? ;):D;)

Two relatively new movies I liked...
American Gangster
Michael Clayton

Check out this Billy Bob Thornton classic......Sling Blade

Also saw Taare Zameen par......... good movie.

1. The Others
2. The Matrix (1st one only)
3. Munna Bhai MBBS
4. Lord of the Rings
5. Schindler's List
6. Jurassic Park
7. Dilwale Dhulaniya Le Jayenge

I am sure i am forgetting some but i guess these movie I can watch over and over and never get tired of them

I just happened to see 10,000 BC which was nuthing but another special effect stint.....one time watch..don know why it has grossed such a amount on box office on the opening weekend (~35.9 Million)

but another one "No country for old men" was real blaster.....NO doubt it bagged the best Movie and director at academy nite....keeps you gelled to your seat till the end
Josh Brolin....after American Gangster (which is another acclaimed flick of 07)

Vantage point is another top grosser of the week.....but its a diff kinds thriller...where clips keep on repeating from diff perspectives.....media, agents(security), president, terrorists......basically a thriller about assassins trying for American President....the concluding part is not convincing to me..........I mean they cud have done better....

I liked In the wild as much as another all time fav.....a must have DVD

more later.....:)

Shaurya

Was almost getting sick of the recent Bollywood crap like Krazzy 4 n U Me blah blah, when “Shaurya” came as a whiff of fresh air. Pretty good movie I would say!

Rahul Bose was excellent and so are others whatever little performances their role demanded. Nice to see Javed Jaafri in a serious role and Kay Kay Menon too did total justice to the role. Manisha Lamba had a limited role, a short one but she was ok.

Cinematography is beautiful, Kashmir being the backdrop for the movie. Direction is ok, could have been better. Music of the movie disappointed me though. But then, how many perfect movies do we have these days.

Keeping aside few lil flaws the movie is pretty good though I heard the storyline is an “inspired” one from a Hollywood flick…but wait a min...are you surprised on that?!!:D

So, in a nutshell, it’s a good movie to go for. I would rate it 7/10.

I liked the movie too. However, it could have been a lot better. The court
scenes needed to be handled a lot better. The scene where the Brig was in
the stand was poorly done. The Brig pretty much couldn't stop himself
from talking even without much prodding.

Rahul Bose and KK Menon are fine actors and they were a treat to watch.

Should also watch the Holloywood one that this is inspired from...A few
Good Men....Jack Nicholson is pretty impressive...

Check out this scene:
