I live and work in Gurgaon. These days the commute to office has become absolutely horrible due to the throngs of Kanwars travelling through NH8 and other arterial roads of Gurgaon.
While the traffic police has allocated them stretches of the road to avoid traffic accidents, many of the Kanwar groups riding in jeeps, cars and bikes act very rowdily and misbehave with other users of the road. Yesterday evening I saw a moving kanwar jeep with one person sitting on the bonnet waving a hockey stick in the air as if to signal some victory celebration. This was right at the Iffco chowk with traffic police as mere onlookers. The open trucks carry huge music systems that blare through at high volume. I also saw another group of kanwars on bikes abusing and pushing a rickshaw puller who 'dared' to come close to their bike on a turn. One shudders to imagine that this continues for 2-3 weeks every year.
All this energy of youth looks misspent in such behaviour. If only these young men could be guided to help in some social causes rather than create ruckus on the road in the name of religious activities.
