It requires lion's heart to go through all the posts running into six pages; and hence I would apologize to those whose posts I did not read before getting on to posting my views. Having read some posts here; I have come to the conclusion that the discussion is on "Two approaches" that people take:
1. Some people back home think; that NRI's are not doing enough for the nation; and actually betraying the nation by getting education in India and then working abroad.
2. Some people living abroad (NRI's) think, that people who think as above (mentioned in 1) are those who wanted to go abroad, but could not go for whatever reasons, and their views are as a result of frustration.
To justify, our views we are giving all kind of examples, from driving Taxis and cleaining Toilets in foreign land, to the physical discomforts due to polution, outrageous traffice, law and order problems, and so on, the list goes on.
There are different reasons, that people leave their villages, and countries. Historically, people have migrated from one place to another for better opportunities. As they saying goes that the "Grass looks green on otherside of the hill". Every thing that shines is not a gold we all know that.
Now to the subject. If I got the question right; my answer in simplest form is that; (to thinking mentioned in 1 & 2 above) it shows lack of understanding of the issues and shallowness of ideas/views. More than any thing else it is the self ego, or frustration that results in bashing of any community, religion, nation or culture. We tend to pass judgement without hearing the case. I think some of you had posted "Nathuram Godse's" argument/statement at his trial; when he described Gandhi is judge of his own case; the irony is that Nathuram did the same. He became his own judge and thus assassinated Gandhi.
1. Those who feel, driving Taxis and cleaning toilets is a bad thing to do to make a living. To them, I would say that it is better than robbing people on street, occupying position of power and making money out of it and taking bribe to do one's own duty for which you get a salary that you agreed to get. These taxi drivers and Janitors have worked hard to put their children in best of schools. Not only that, there are convenience store owners, who come to their store, rain or shine, and keep the coffee ready at 5 AM in the morning in sub zero tempratures, why? because they want to ensure that their children can have a good education and better life. Essentially, what they are doing? They are helping people (their children) become better and meaningful member of the society. Now compare it to the son of a landlord in your own village (if still some people have enough land to meet the definition) who gets up at whatever time and wastes his time and his father's money for whatever he does.
2. Why a good thing should be linked to a particular nation, culture, religion or caste. You have good and bad people across the spectrum of society in every country. You talk about NRI's treated badly abroad. I have seen, Indians treated badly in India. Chamar, Chudhe whom you don't allow to drink water from your well and whom you don't allow to sit on your charpoy, are they not Indians? We so called intellectuals (as we all think that we are) have created so many bounds and breakers to divide the community all across the world, we know the ill effects of it but the effort continues relentlessly. All that we believe in NRI Vs RI's, Hindu Vs Muslim, Indian Vs Foreigners, White vs Black, Jat vs a Non Jat.
I wonder when would be the time, when we will look at another human being as a human being and treat him/her absolutely based on his/her contribution to the society and the skills that person has. Read my line below: Never judge people what they do, judge them how they do.
World is not perfect, and that is why it is called World, remember the sentence "Ye Duniya Hai Yaar". A taxi driver and a Janitor contribute as much to the society as any one else. Imagine if a Janitor does not come and clean your toilet one day? (I am talking about the time when you did not have flush system in villages); your house would have stinked more than your mind. Someone talked about people having four girl friends in foreign countries. Well, we don't know someone in India may be having even more. But why that should be an issue in first place. Have as many girl friend as you can afford. If you think that it is immoral; then don't have one. What do you mean by Girl friend? Does that mean that the person sleeps with all of them? Can't one have any other relationship with a woman? And if that be just a moral issue, then why do you like Raja Dashrath; he had three wives. King Bhimbhsar had three wives. Ajatshatru married his maternal uncles daughter effectively cousin. We don't mind that, but we always bash Islam for similar traditions. Why do we have double standards?
It is painful to read some of the comments people have made on this thread specially so because most of us are educated. Kindly think outside the box. Approach the issue in its entirity. Positive thinking may be more helpful. And remeber; money really does not make any one permanently happy or unhappy.
If one gets two full meals in a day; Happiness is just the state of mind thereafter.
