So sir, it can probably be said that soft skills are ALSO meant as a 'cover up' so things don't look as bad as they may be between people i.e., prevents an all out mud slinging as some like to call it.

There are situations in life when our so called soft skills seem to become redundant. One such situation is when you get ignored by the very people who apparently were very close to you. I have faced this personally. Trust me, its extremely painful situation and all our soft skills are put to ultimate test.

soft skils are not limited to Thank you and sorry; once again, it is the cluster of personality traits, social graces, communication, language, personal habits, friendliness, and optimism that characterize relationships with other people.

I would agree to most of what you have said. However, applications have to be tailored as per situation. Too much or too little of anything will vary from situation to situation. Friendliness can be good in one situation, but misunderstood in another. Social grace is definitely a very good trait which comes very handy in some of very difficult situations. Once again, different situation require different levels of social grace. Social grace requires lot of inner strength and understanding and does not come early in life. Moreover, social grace is a matter of perception and therefore a very subjective parameter. Its manifestation also needs to tailored as per occasion. Right or wrong, most of relations are need based. Utility of relations is the deciding factor to large extent more than anything else. Soft skills become more of added value to the utility of relationship.

There appears to be adrift in the importance/application of soft skills, Basically they are more important for a job rather in personal and social life life.

Soft skills complement hard skills which are the occupational requirements of a job and many other activities. BLS31
 
I f you are using the limited number of usable soft skills in social interaction you would be known as a good mannered, sociable, likeable and pleasant person.
On the other hand in the Corporate sector where candidates, with the mandatory hard skill and additionally with soft skills are being preferred and being sought for.
