The cup of life.....World Cup poll

Yesterday watched Argentina & dutch fighting to score a goal. Dutch palyed very good but never seemed to threaten argentina. But there were many goal shots from Argentina and sometimes they were just unlucky. My vote is with Argentina...they have strong players, good strikers like Devez, Messi, Rodriguez..I think they can win Argentina this world cup..

giyooo :(

poor czechs r out.. n so r the poland and US.. Ghana has made awesome entry into the sec round..
ivory coast were unlucky to have been in a tough pool...

n tomm i guess france too will bid adieu.. no zidane no france!

People were waiting when will Ronaldo score his first goal and lo he got 2 agaist japan... and became top scorer of all time in brazil... i guess 1 more to go for top scorer of all time... he remains kinda lazy during game though, ronaldinho made nice moves... keep fingers crossed for clash with ghana...

Brazil 4 - Japan 1

wooooooohoooooooooo!!! What a game.............

I don't care what anyone feels about them (Brazil) being the cup holders and also that maybe it is time someone beat them finally (there is a part of me that loves a super shocker too!)......but man, if they are playing the way they did against Japan......Damn!!! God save their opponents! This is nothing about being prejudiced (I personally lean towards Argentina, England and Germany in that order as my own prejudiced favorites, if anything) but really guys, give these Brazilians their due, they are simply some kinda killing machines who know their football that is hard to ignore, try as you might!!!....

Wicked, wicked......and simply just not fair (to the other teams, I mean)!!!... That artistry and samba dance like soft touch moves and deadly pin-point superb passes were just simply oh so breathtaking,
You see, I had somehow luckily recorded that game too and later rewound some (maybe like 20 of them) key moments and watched them again and again......with the same wonder like stupid look on my face,.....you know I personally feel that if they still somehow go on to lose to someone at some stage (highly unlikely I must tell ya), it still wouldn't matter at all, that last game against Japan alone made my world cup of all kinda 'soccer-sorcery', full to the brim! To my mind they are and continue to be THE big guys in football, no discussion and no prisoners taken!!! :D

And then this guy Ronaldo defies all the critics calling him too fat and slow!?! You gotta see him turn and hit in one fluid motion in that game last night, and of course those two goals in that game (that tie him to the highest goal scorer in world cup history) alone proves what I am talking about! this guy and that black pony tail wonder Ronaldhino were all over the place and must have created like a zillion chances feeding the others (the final scoreline does not hold a match to the most amazing goal mouth saves by the poor Japanese goalie, tested to almost the edge of his soccer life! It could have easily been 10-1 if not for him!)....

I gotta go drink some coffee and let the adrenalin settle down here...........

now its getting better, the clash of titans -

Oh man... in Aus vs ITL, Aussies were playing better than Italy, dominating the game but in last 15 sec a foul in penalty area gave Italy a penalty... which they converted to goal... In my view Aussies are better team than Italy, I dont think that foul was genuine... it was so unexpected, thats what makes soccer so interesting... I wish that Italy looses next game..
In England vs Ecuador game, Eng didn't play very good but "bend in Beckham's kick" saved England... becoming interesting, anything can happen... but looking as Brasil vs Japan and Argentina vs Mexico... Argentina doesn't seem to stand much chance against Brasil... the way their strikers play is pure beauty with 1-2-1 passes and dribbling...

But there is catch... Brasil and Argentina don't get to play until final...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2006/schedule/default.stm

If they keep winning, they will meet in final.... and then it will be mega interesting...

And so far, 23 reds and 291 yellows cards already exceeded total no. of cards given in any world cup... boys are playing rough game...

...Tannae jad theek he kahee thee Vinod, ude to koi pony-tail dekkhe konya! ;)

Nahee yaar, while at this stage (last 16) all teams are supposed to perform well and give the other team a run for their money (and defend well, by putting almost two defenders or more on the oppositions main strikers, for example), it shall always be a close game no matter how big the opposition is on paper!
In this case you talk about; remember Italy was down to 10 men!... Also if you look at the stats and the strikes on the goal by either team in that game, you will get your answer on which was the better team............
So really, while Italy was getting frustrated by the Aussies, no doubt (hence the red card too) they were playing the better football!...
You see, those low scoring last minute goals shall always the case at this close contested final 16 matches (see with Netherland-Portugal, England-Ecuador, Germany-Sweden too)....also quite a lot depends on what the under-dog teams strategy is and how good they play (and hence be the deserving winners,....or NOT!).....

Don't get me wrong, while I too like big upsets and a dark horse comming out winner, I HATE it when under-dogs teams slip thru with just some lucky goal! I would rather see 90 minutes of great football, with great goal scoring chances rather that unlucky 'self-goal' by a great team or the lucky default tap in by an under-dog!.... Survival of the fittest, this is no place for sympathy for the weak!

A good and well performing team (for the crowd), doesn't matter which one it is, is the only one that should advance (that is why I hate seeing the game going to the lucky-unlucky penalty shoot-outs too!)....so if an under-dog team plays awesome football and dominates the game with zillion goal scoring opportunities (even if they don't convert any) and then still get elimiminated at the eleventh hour, then I would be sad....but really from my point of view there has been no such thing yet; be it the Aussies, Sweden (againt Germany) or even Ecuador! For me none deserving team that played better football has exited yet!!!...........
Also talking about the dark horses and under-dogs, I think only one such deserving winners out outperformed the opposition and that were definitely Portugal (againt the Dutch giants!)
...but that infamous match (with it's yellow and red cards) is a discussion for some other time!

Brazil 3- Ghana 0

...That's what I mean by a good display by an under-dog team (no, not the scoreline of course, but if you watched the match and saw the great performance of the African nation against the Brazilian giants!)....but then in the end as one can see; still not good enough; they (Ghana) definitely showed their understandable inexperience and more importantly the faulty off-side traps (that were completely exposed by Brazil in all the three goals!)....
But let me tell you, if not for some amazing saves by the Brazilian goal-keeper the scorline could be a little different (not just a zero), if not exactly match winning for the Ghana team!....

You are right but Brasil also missed some target shots... Ghana controlled the game but Brasil didn't need possession for long to score (e.g. 2nd goal)... Ronaldo rocks... now media is all praising him but the fact remains that he is not Ronaldo of 2002... Ghana wanted to become first African team to score against Brasil in world cup but their dream was shattered... Argentina vs Germany clash will be interesting... but before that don't forget spain vs france

....ooooh yeah, that game later today should be very-very interesting! (plus now we have that Nostradamus prediction to follow too, don't we!?! Ha! Ha! ;) )
I sure wish that France fires this time....for Zidane this should be now or never!

You are right, Ronaldo sure looked super cool even after becoming the undisputed highest scorer of goals in world cups (I mean, have you seen him after scoring any of his goals, he just grins that toothy smile and waits for getting mobbed by teammates.....) I guess he has been there, done that!!!

ya vinod
though i am not a great fan of soccer but ,,i think that day australians played better than the Italians....but the mistake by falling in Italy panelty area was one mistake for which they had to pay for,,,,,and tht too the raffery seemed to be too biased ,,,

France Won

It was a good game .Excitement right from the kick off. Zidane fired back onto his critics with a classic goal. Finally Ribery got a goal.He had put a lot of effort in the field and has been criticised by some people as well.
As it was predicted that France is a slow starter (except 2002 where they didnt even start:rolleyes: ). So it would be now FRA-BRA and hopefully Zidane will comeback to his 1998 WC finals form.MY predictions for that match
2-0 in favour of France.

I think it will be 2-0 in favor of Brasil... bet laga le chahe to, ok if I loose I wont visit jatland for 2 days and if you loose you do the same ha ha ha... in the beginning I was cheering for Argentina but looks like Brazil will steal the show anyway...

Vinod
BTW see the vidoes of brazilian soccer skill. click on the link and watch all the videos... they show trademark skills of most of the players..

Ok Binod.......deal done. Being a French fan I dont want them to loose. Couple of factors which make me feel it for France are:
Zidane- being his last WC, what could be better for him than a WC title under his captaincy;
Vikash Dhorasso- a player from Indian origin,so far has been kept out of starting 11 but I am sure he will make his mark on the field one day.

.....Man! Friday is THE game of the tournament!!!....
The clinical star filled (with five great strikers to pick from) Argentina go up against the free flowing but maurading Germans headed by the super playmaker Ballack!...

In the other games: Italy and then Brazil should come thru...(sorry Pannu, somehow I personally tend to agree with Vinod on this one! Still in any case, I will just wait on the sidelines and watch which one of you goes on the sabbatical for a couple of days! ;) )

The other interesting match should be England vs. Portugal....(Portugal have been the surprise team in last eight to my mind)....I still wanna see Rooney fire and Lampard, Beckham and Crouch right behind! Let's see how that goes!

hi folks ! what will be the possible result, If Brazil fights against Argentina in final ?.......I think this time Argentina is going to the Champion................... Argentina Superb with Juan Roman, Crespo...................

Hi guys,

I don't know if anyone else noticed this or not but one team from each of the eight original groups made it to the quaterfinals. Quite a coincidence.

I am also interested in finding out what your thoughts are on which team has impressed you the and which team has disappointed the most so far.
