Violence against Women - Wake up call

Dear All,

This is a very apt topic and needs serious discussion. Violence against the weaker sex is a reality and happens across the board in urban and rural societies. Who can forget the public bashing of the then cine star Zeenat Aman by Sanjay Khan and that too in the lobby of Hotel TAJ in Mumbai!

Let us leave out the criminal part of violence against women because that is a worldwide phenomenon and not limited to this caste or that. We must focus only on domestic violence in JAT households. It is not a question of merely balancing between the views of women belonging to two generations in a household but a combination of factors; cultural mindset, perceived dominance of the male species, socio-economic conditions, proving that one is not henpecked, breaking up of joint family structure, perceived economic control or exploitation by the elders, taunts by the relatives, feeling of suffocation by some in a joint family and alcoholism.

JATS by nature are respectful towards women but find it difficult to portray the same in our daily chores. Some of the factors for domestic violence are:

1. The woman in a JAT household works harder than her male counter part, at least in Haryana, where they also work in the farmland. The ‘Man’ may only play cards and drink too, but he would dominate her like in all aspects. If there is resistance, violence is guaranteed.
2. Even in a city where both wife and husband work, a lady is expected to be perfect in household work too.
3. We give too much importance to relatives. We will declare curfew in the house the minute a ‘Bataeu’, ‘Mamma’ or ‘Phoopha’ arrives. We go overboard and try to put on an act in which the women suffer. It has been seen that the relatives who arrive from the lady’s house don’t get the same respect. Well, if the lady has come with hefty dowry the story is entirely different!
4. God save the wife who is more educated than the husband in a joint family. His ego would manifest and find release, one day or the other, in domestic violence.
5. Women hardly have a say when it comes to deciding the future of ancestral property or such like financial matters.
6. In households where there is a common kitchen, differences are automatic and violence a derivative. Punjabis will have two rooms and three kitchens!
7. There is a growing trend of families shifting to cities for education and other facilities. However, it is often seen that the areas in which they settle are worse than the village they had left (lack of basic amenities because of non existence municipal facilities) behind. The Ghetto type of living invites competing social pressures on these rural folk and it leads to dissatisfaction and violence.
8. The neglect of the ‘Girl Child’ continues despite the various schemes of the government.

I am sure members will come out with remedies to these ills.

Best regards,

JS Malik

PS: Thanks to all members for wishing me Happy Birthday earlier. Sorry, I couldn't reply immediately. God Speed to you all...

Taking social responsibility

Sheoran Sahab,

Family is a core unit of society and hence civilization so females are an important part of it. Nature has made man with more aggressive hormones than females. Hence we witnessed numerous wars in the history. A female by nature is not equally aggressive as male. These are natural traits which has both advantage and disadvantage. Title of your thread once in all put men in questionable and blaming position without questiong the *reasons* of violence. Infact ^What^ causes the violence in family must be an important issue. Further , sadly, as you asked, I would like to answer, in the emanicipation/liberation of women, it is not men who are hurdles rather it is her own gender i.e women herself are one of biggest hurdles. Secondaly, in a family violence , men's aggression is usually subtly manipulated by another female which could be mother, sister etc.

Fictional serial which scared you shows matriarchial system in that family which is rarest among jats or whole of north India. Don't buy it, simple, it is stupid. Television is the TRP sea-saw so they have to stirr the emotion of populace to keep it going. Further switch on your television set to realise modern reality through an another programme Emotional Atyachaar. No disclaimer helps actually.

Violence is purely human because it is an important part of expression your feelings and emotions. You can not over rule it with mushy-mushy words.

Like you mentioned in another link of western societies , kindly also notice their percentage of single mothers, divorce rates and teenage abortions. Tagging our system as backward purely in their context is not only foolish but also completely immature. Increasing divorce rates would be an interesting point to discuss in whole North India. What has instigated it?

God doesnt care all these shyts. He has better things to look after.

Dear Samar,

Reason for posting was to raise awareness about this senseless act which takes many forms and can result from number of factors, e.g. greed, anger, revenge etc.Every one is entitled to their opinion and definitions of right and wrong can change with time and place. What can not change is cause and effect.

In my opinion right knowledge and attitude is key to solution. People get angry for various reasons for example see following thread;
http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?4625-What-makes-you-angry

With education, person is expected to learn social skills, however that is not always true hence these acts take place in all societies. Some people try to justify their anger and find justification for it. In rural life style there was openness and peer pressure to moderate one's behaviour. If husband got angry there were others in the family or neighbourhood who intervened. However in urban scenario and nuclear families that control is absent, hence greater chances of this crime which is still a taboo and not discussed openly.

It is upto all of us to keep an open mind and not ignore it. History is witness to atrocities and injustices commited against women. Question is will we continue to ignore it or take some social responsibility?

Bhai,
Kuch haad tak kam kiya ja sakta he to do teem bindu he :-
1.Education.
2.Maturity.
3.Equal opportunity.

Bhai Rakesh...
These factors are not enough to avoid all that.

People who are well educated, well mature are also involved in all that..

If you will talk of corporate world, to yahan to achhey achhey padhey likhey and samajhdaar JANVAR (Not all, but a majority of them)miltey hai who are well aware to take advantage of women in every terms and knowingly or unknowingly women also tries to avoid all that crap happening there with them...
To make a strong society, women need to be more strong and bold..there is no other option to stop violence against women.

Dear Fauji,

Thanks for your contribution. What appears from some of the posts is denial, acceptance or apathy. Understandably it is not every one's cup of tea to discuss about such taboo topics.

This thread is targeted for action by men to raise awareness of this criminal activity which goes on unchecked. Women are ofcourse welcome to contribute in raising awareness. No doubt there are legal venues which may not be practical for victims and they rather suffer in silence hoping the situation improves, which may happen or may not. What community in general can help is by raising awareness about it and have courage to act on it. Socially it is a difficult subject to get some one to talk about their domestic issues. There is guidance available on how can this problem be tackled at macro level. International white ribbonday is on 25th Naovember and those who would like to do some thing about it can click on the links below and take the oath never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.

http://bellbajao.org/
http://www.whiteribbonday.org.au

Even if some one is reluctant to take such an oath, atleast reading the contents on these websites will raise awareness about it. After all JAT stands for Justice, Action, Truth which is all that is needed in these situations.

Take care

To-day is white ribbon day. Let us see how serious are Jats about this criminal behaviour about which we seldom talk, often deny and at best acknowledge, but do little. This is a test of character, do we have the courage to face the truth and stand up for the justice within our community. If you are serious about it, here is your opportunity, otherwise enjoy your life and ignore the injustice part. However you can not ignore the fact that, without justice there can be no peace and without peace there is no happiness. It is that simple. We all have choice to make decisions in life, some may be right and some may be wrong. Sooner or later the results of our decisions stare us in the face. Let us hope some of us have courage to do the right thing and practice what we preach. Here you go; Click on this link if you like, otherwise go to next posting on this fabulous community virtual home.

this topic does not need any discussion. Gone are days when women used to be a silent spectator for her ill-treatment. Now this so called dominated sex is tormented and torn apart by women here and there. These kind of topics are just over hyped and far from the truth. I don't understand what people want to earn by writing on these frivolous topic. People should just stop the "sneak-peek" in life of others. Why these people do not write about those countless men who are booked in forged dowry or harassment cases. Be a man don't try to be a 'devta"

IMHO (in my humble opinion) the original post is a relevant topic. Domestic violence against women exists. This is also true that some women may take advantage of flawed legal system to book husbands and in-laws in fake anti-dowry cases. The cases of former are several times more than later.

I am amazed at tendency to hide the ugly truths and only portray clean 'Veer Jat' image to the world. Why is it a taboo to discuss ugliness of some of our customs, be it violence against women or even corporal punishment. Honor killings continue while khaps not only act as mute spectator but also ncourage it discretely.

Another worrying trend, I see so much fake bravado about being Jat (daru peena shaan ki baat, daru pee ke drive karna aur bi shaan ki baat, gunda gardi is asli jat) among some youngsters. Take pride in one's heritage is different from being casteist.

What kind of jats do we want to be - civilized productive progressive society or medivial talibani jats?

What do we wanna do - allow our daughters to wear bikini while she competes in Olympics to bring a gold medal or do we kill her for marrying a non-jat?

A society that can not look at itself, discuss its own shortcomings, will never be able to overcome them.

Ch Chottu Ram, Ch Chhaju Ram, Swami Agnivesh, Swami Indravesh: Why do we respect them? They all raised the awareness of Jat social taboos, fought against them, brought about many social reforms including then-unthinkable now-desirable-norm of female education, etc.

Let Die Die, fake caste bravado.
Jago India, Jago.
Jago Jat, Jago.

Intolerant moddey bhad me jao.
Dhillon sahab!!...........Domestic violence against women exist but there is a sharp decline in such cases. Intolerance among women is creeping up . Moreover, don't you smell a spree of segregation? Why all the topics start portraying women "mahanta ki devi" ,'bechari", "abla"? I have never seen a topic on jatland discussing about harassment of men by women but you can search out so many threads crying foul on part of men. Why the people don't write about men at the same time whose life have become a hell?

Bhai prashant, First of all, its just Vishal (or Dhillon, no shaab). Thanks for the feedback.

Secondly, you assume too much, and jumping to unwarranted conclusions about my statement. I do not wish to make it battle of sexes thread and no where I implied it. I am all for raising awareness of issues, be it male or female or unisex issues. if you wish to create an awareness about male issues, I am happy to contribute to the discussion. just because some male suffer, then we must not close eyes to all female issues, and vice versa. I am a lover i.e. I love people, male or female, young or old. I am happy to discuss issues, gender based or not, but wont like to dragged in futile gender bashing, etc. Thanks.

I agree, uski bhi areness ho ... latest reseach says that stats prove that women hit more and they initiate hitting more frequently than man but man cause more damage. it is a taboo subject (female domestic violence against man) rarely discussed in all cultures including western, not sure though if it is the right thread or you wish to start a new thread for that one
