Whats happening in Australia?

The relationship between ethinicaly diverse students was never Symbiotic...it was always co-existense.

now in these troubled times, that relative calm can be easily perturbed as there is one thing which many Indian students do easily relative to their Western (or eastern) counterparts...that is to slog their a**es off and work hard for those ever disappearing jobs and even accept lesser money for a similar job profile

so in a way these goraas get irritated and insecure and this is what happens to vent that frustration.....this is the case in most of the pure racial motive beatings

sometimes, however, the motive might be more complex than apparent to an outsider--for instance it might a mugging gone wrong or a drug knee jerk reaction from some street hobo...

ozzies need a few pepped up surdies at the right place at the wrong time and for the clock to strike 12 at that instant :D (just kidding ofcourse)

tum teesmarkhannon ne yeh baat nahee batyayee ki inn gore logoon ko kaun hae Indian, pakistani, bangladeshi, srilankan, nepali iss ka pata kaise chalta hae?
vikasji ki aur sumit ke manne sikhoon par attack ho rahee haen.
kaheen aisa too nahe ki australia mein harbhajan singh ki wajay see sikhoon par attack ho rahe haen? iss bhajji ne aussies ko jayada hae tanne maree haen.:tamatar

aur yeh bhi ho sakta hae ki amerika mein gore log sardaroon ki pagdiaan dekh kar unko osama laden ke langotiya yaar samajne ki galte kareen see?
baatein kuch ajeb see haen par kya pata aisa hae ho raha ho?
ab saab log to akshay kumar, dharmender aur dara singh too ho nahee sakte jab yeh gundee unn par toot padeen jaise tareka vikasji bata rahae haen inn gore gundoon see sar bhidanee ka. kyon bhi?

as to why we are everyday hearing such cases every now nd then...one more reported today ?
is it b.cos the media has highlighted the issue so much tht even a small, trivial incidence is also being reported ?
or has it something to do with the real picture tht exists/existed but was never reported hitherto...
for what-so-ever reasons ?

i've heard frm many tht australians are arrogant nd racist. one of my friend even surrendered his PR well before all these incidences came into highlight.

thanks ! wud appreciate yr further views on the matter.

Dear Brahm

I will go with the second view expressed by you!
Although, i wouldn't call a physical attack as small and trivial but believe that it wouldn't get the kind of attention it is getting now. There are almost 47000 Indian students in Melbourne and a large % of them have some late night work, at least one or two nights a week! thus exposed to certain degree of risk while returning home from work. Degree of resistance also very low in face of any attack or situation of unhealthy behavior as they always avoid involving them in any kind of controversy that can lead to police case. A simple police case can not only delay their PR or TR application but can ruin their chances permanently.
If we talk of recent attacks, there is nothing racist about that.
These natives who attack Indian students are chronic offenders.Majority of them remain in and out of jail. so police , court and jail doesn't scare them. most of them are addicted to liquor or drugs.

it's a naked fact tht racism exists in most parts of the world nd the gori chamdi always have an edge over blacks nd browns. lets put it in samar's word "countries are not racist, but the people are". catch yr ears any way you can by putting it in any words, the fact however, REMAINS. the law may be same for all communities of ppl living in a particular country, but i strongly doubt the fairness in its execution by the law enforcers. even here, in south africa, racism exists in all its possible forms... but in a 'hush hush' (obscured) way nd the outcome, more often then not is mostly determined by the law enforcers, which in majority are still whites.
kuch baatien abhi taak samaj na aayeen.
pehle baat yeh australia ke goree loggon ko kaise pata hae ki woh sirf hindustani par waar karnee ja raheen haeen? kya unko pata hae ki unka victim sirf hindustani hae na ki pakistani, srilankan, nepali, bengaldeshi hae?

dusri baat aap south africa rahate ho wahaan hindustani bhi rahate the, gandhiji bhi thee.
ek baat bataana waah ki jo kaale habshi loog haee unke saath waahan ki hindustani kaise pesh aate haeen? kyan wahaan ki kaale hanbshi logoon mein aur hindustaniyoon mein bahut pyar mohbbat hae? aur pehle bhi thee?
u need to come out of the maze nd haze where you are revolving round nd round nd round nd stop this spinning effect. if you are not color blind, just see in my post what is painted red. brown color includes all ppl in yr list of countries.

the last line of my post clearly defines the way the matters are sorted out, here in SA... chashma laga ke phir se padh (now specially painted green for you) aur rahi south african racism ki baat, hade racism ulta sai... hade kaalaan (locals) ki saudd bhar di jaati hai, agar hathe chadh gyaa to.

you only know tht gandhiji was in s.africa nd totally unaware of the sort of racism tht exists/existed here ever since the apartheid times... wch is more predominant btwn goras nd blacks. indians mingled very well among the local blacks nd there was hardly any enmity btwn them (off course, they too came here as laborers). in high political hierarchy, the respect nd awe for indians is still very much apparent nd thts the reason tht we all indians are waived off frm any visa fee for visiting SA + so many other benefits. all due to the good work carried out by gandhiji for the locals during the apartheid era.

ICC twenty20 nd IPL T20 na dekhan aaya hade... naa tae bera paat jyaata.

thanks a lot sir, for the explanation.

Did I say that if there had been a Jan Sangh government we would have been better off - maybe, maybe not.
But there is a direct correlation between lack of quality and quantity of higher education and the education policy since independence. That education policy was planned and executed by the Congress Party.

Here is an informative link to drive the point home.

http://www.deeshaa.org/2009/05/18/arun-shourie-on-the-indian-education-system/

Read this carefully .... Here's your sign ..... If we had good education in India - we would only have a fraction of people spending large sums of money to go to Australia - less people less attacks. The ones going to Australia would be better off and would go there for specific reason of education only. They would not turn up en masse in Australia for Perm Residency like they do now. They would also not work graveyard shifts and travel through bad neighborhoods.... where they are attacked ... the initial intent maybe mugging ... with racial epithets thrown in. I don't hear of Japanese students in Australia (if there are any) being attacked with regular frequency.

I did not know that Aussies were beating up Indians for - mass-pre-mature-ejaculation --- whatever the hell that means!

I am done with the jhikjhik baji regarding this ... if you dont get it .. thats fine .... I am not your teacher ... go read up.

Ha ha ha ha...

Bhai logon...meh tae nuh kahoon sun ki yoh saara kasoor Ganga ka sae!!
Na ganga behntee, na mahari dharti upjaoo hontee, na wahan "ugta

Tae bhaaye logon [dramatic pause] yo saara kasoor [dramatic pause] ganga ka sae.

Aur yeh baat janta jaanti bhi hai. Jibe toh saari haan it shits and pisses and dumps its dead into it! Err pher sawaad len tahin calls it "holy ganga"... :D

Err Samar bhai yo mass pre-ejac...ke ho ae..yoh tae bera na...lekin sounds

It doesnt take too long Deshwal bhisaab. Roughly 1 month nd u appear in the court nd its easy to change the dates if witnesses r not available or something. Well everything is better than ending up in Emergency isnt it?

If there is :

Intent
Ability
Means
Opportunity

U can use a reasonable force to stop that person in self defence. If they have knife which is life threatening , u can use maximum force nd law will help u with tat. Self defence is not a crime ! Everyone knows it. and if u still dont defend urself then u r a coward and no body should help u.

Nothing to worry about police records u r saving ur life .

There is another aspect to retaliate in self defence!
Most of the students here are not for gaining a better degree but Australian Residency. Even, if you beat somebody in self defence, it would take months and years to get one's name cleared!

Unlucky yes, but I guess a little stupid too

It says in the news that he was walking back home, alone at about 1:40 at night. (in an area where there have been many attacks recently)

I know sometimes you can't help it, but in the present scenario, he was foolish to walk alone at these odd hours

One beating breeds contempt :p
I guess now he will remain on his gurard!

Lightening does strike twice. This guy is really unlucky.

India Asks Why Its Students Must Study Abroad

Violent attacks on Indians in Australia raise widespread alarms. Yet many still view India's universities as inadequate

You know India-Australia relations have reached a nadir when Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bacchan, who has ruled over India's film industry since the 1970s, turns down an honorary degree from an Australian university. "My conscience is profoundly unsettled at the moment," he wrote to Queensland University of Technology in a letter he posted to his blog on May 30. The action superstar has good reason to be upset. For weeks, Indian and Australian media have focused on an alarming number of Indian students in Australia who have been robbed, beaten, and left for dead <http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/blog/eyeonasia/archives/2009/06/in_australia_in.html> . On May 24, a 25-year-old student from India was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver during a mugging in Melbourne, leaving him comatose. On June 2, an Indian student was robbed by a gang of five men, who slashed his chest with a box cutter after demanding money and cigarettes. In Melbourne's western suburbs, one-third of all violent attacks target Indians. According to a report by Australian police authorities, the state of Victoria (of which Melbourne is the capital) reported 1,440 attacks against Indians in the 12 months ended June 2008, up from about 1,000 attacks in the previous 12 months. About 50,000 Indians live in Melbourne, a city of 4 million, according to government estimates, In India and elsewhere, the reaction was immediate: On May 31, close to 1,000 Indians took to the streets in Melbourne and about 300 protesters ringed the Australian Embassy in New Delhi. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd called Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the day before the protests and condemned the attacks, but said they were criminal, not racist in nature. Indian newspapers and television channels leaped on the story, accusing Australians of racism and the Australian government of doing little to protect its guests. Typical of the reaction in the Indian media was a story in The Economic Times, India's largest business paper, with the headline, "Australia, Land of Racists."

Better Protection Needed
Fresh from their humiliating defeat in national elections, opposition parties have seized the opportunity to score some points by criticizing what they called the failure of Singh's government to do something concrete to stop these attacks. "The dreams of Indian middle-class parents who mortgage their lifetime savings and obtain education loans to send their children have fallen astray to racist manifestations," the Communist Party of India wrote to Prime Minister Singh. Indians aren't the only ones concerned about the safety of young Asian students Down Under. Australia has about 415,000 foreign students, according to government estimates, of which Indians make up 90,000. That's second only to the 130,000 Chinese. Beijing has taken note of the uproar. A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Canberra told the Sydney Morning Herald on June 2 that "it is hoped that the Australian government will provide better protection to international students from China and other countries." For India, this news has also generated a time for introspection. Why, some in the Indian media are asking, are so many young Indian students going to Australian universities anyway? India, with world-class IT services outsourcers <http://bx.businessweek.com/india-offshore-outsourcing/> like Infosys (INFY <http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/snapshot/snapshot.asp?symbol=INFY> ) and Wipro (WIT <http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/snapshot/snapshot.asp?symbol=WIT> ), is supposed to be a new knowledge superpower, besting more developed economies with an endless supply of educated young workers. However, most Indian universities are inadequate. Few have the staff they need to operate at full capacity, computer labs are mostly nonexistent, and syllabi are out of date. By 2011, according to one estimate by the All India Council of Technical Education, Indian universities will have 231,000 fewer teachers than they need, and 90% of that teacher gap is in engineering, one of the sectors that has propelled India's economy forward in the last decade. In India, a few elite universities make global lists of excellence, but the vast majority are decaying, state-run institutions that can barely hire enough teachers and buy new computers. Nearly one-third of them are operating with 20% fewer teachers than they need, and none have as many PhDs as needed, according to a survey by India's accreditation council done in May 2008. The investment needed to catch up? At just the 1,500 engineering colleges, at least $5 billion.

Deep Educational Deficiencies
That money is not likely to come from a government hobbled by an economic slowdown and a high deficit. In the recent elections, higher education barely featured in the campaigns. India still has less than half its young children in primary schools, so college education is low on the priority list. On June 4, Indian President Pratibha Patil released the list of goals for India's new government, the Congress-led UPA coalition, and while primary education and free food for the poor made the list, higher education did not. Fewer than 1 in 4 of India's engineers are immediately employable, estimates the National Association of Software & Service Companies (NASSCOM), the lobbying group for India's IT sector. Others barely speak English or graduate from universities where nearly 65% of the students fail, as in Tamil Nadu state's 150 engineering colleges, according to a study by the accreditation council of India. "This is a serious problem for the entire country," says the human resources head of Infosys, Mohandas Pai. Infosys typically hires tens of thousands of engineers every year, only to have to train them for 16 weeks at a cost of $5,000 per student before they are ready to work. "We could add two or three [percentage points] to our growth figures," he says, "if the government just invested intelligently in our largest resource, which has always been manpower." Wealthy Indians have always migrated for opportunities, both for education and employment. In 2008, about 95,000 Indian students left for the U.S. to study, with Britain and Australia close favorites. Australian universities recruit aggressively in India and China, with education fairs packed with university officials and eager students. In 2008, foreign students added more than $12 billion to the Australian economy, the second-largest earner of foreign exchange after exports of minerals like iron ore and coal. The revenue from international students has increased about tenfold since 1997 as visa restrictions after the September 11 terrorist attacks made studying in the U.S. more complicated. As India's economy continues to grow, some Indian students return after graduation, but at least two different studies indicate that many engineers and doctors will stay on because they possess skills that are in great demand in the West.

The Driving force behind dragging our brown tooshie to developed countries is to get job and PR in these nations...which is easier to get by doing their education.
Yes, engineers produced by our colleges are not industry ready however that is more because of theoretical curriculum rather then less no. of teachers.

Perhaps i read somewhere that an Australian(probably racist) is stabbed last night by some indians..

Amit, you are absolutely right!!!......there are so many universities to apply to as well....another easy way is by getting married- to a citizen or a permanent resident!!!
