Alright people…it has been another great day on Jatland with silly, sexist, and even racial banters and god knows how many kinds of ‘education’ on living, speaking, writing, conversing and laughing…
...Top that off with more depressing news of our good ol’ Indian Team being thoroughly and completely THRASHED by England in the first one day cricket international and thy cup of woe is complete!!!…

Alright, alright…so I am not starting another thread on Cricket (I know- it is a boring game, bad for the nation, bad for other sports blah blah blah…) but how about (and in keeping completely in track with the recent spate of women-centric threads) how about we start looking at some of the more comical, quizzically interesting (and entirely REAL) sub-issues that our great Nation manages to throw into the wheel (with a spanner) of life every now and then……???

SO, Let me start with an interesting article I recently came across-

Women To SERVE or NOT TO Serve Alcohol in public Places in DELHI!!!

Okay, a lil’ history first: It started first when sometime last year the High Court in Delhi, overturned a law that banned women from serving alcohol in it’s public places. It was apparently two judges that subsequently ruled that this ancient 1914 legislation was totally unconstitutional, and violated a woman's fundamental right to equality and to choose her own profession (this ruling came as a response to a petition filed by the Hotel Association of India and two women hotel employees), who said the law was damaging their career prospects.
“Since alcohol was served not only in bars but also in restaurants, at banquets and even in hotel rooms, a woman's right to advance her career in the hospitality industry would be severely jeopardized, their ruling said.”

They went on to say (I love this part) in their ruling statement that ‘the feminine touch indeed lends grace and elegance to the hospitality industry, which grace and elegance is not inherently suited to the male disposition,’

Anyways (read with a roll of the eyes), apparently the ruling was welcomed by several aspiring female bartenders as well as India's Hotel Association. Cool…
Alright, fine…everything okay till this point; sure, a silly dinosaur of a law that did not make any sense in these modern times etc…is laudably moved to be revoked/removed.
But then hold on- lo and behold the Indian government then does a quick turn around (and get this) saying that a ban on women serving alcohol should continue because of the negative attitude and behaviour of men!!!… Geezomighty, ‘behaviour’!!?!!

So great!… earlier it was clearly a law prejudiced against women and their rights and now it is very simply also starts infringing onto the Male rights and prejudices against them! Perfect, trust our those 'powers-to-be' to always get it right…

The government argued that Delhi can actually be termed as a ‘Rouge City’ and that the city's men cannot hold their drink, are not mature enough to have pubs and bars with women bartenders and that is why it is unsafe to allow women bartenders in pubs and restaurants!!!…
(And they of course cite for example of the more recent killing of the model Jessica Lal, in 1999 as a case in point. As everyone who follwed that case knows that she was shot dead by a group of men at a restaurant after she allegedly refused to serve them drinks)

THAT in short is the whole story…a story that of course still needs an ending (as the govt is still supposed to do a final ruling on it, eitherways) But now the question really to you dear members is:

Do you think that is a fair statement by a Government to uphold a highly prejudiced law (any which way you look at it) that has been around for 93 long years by quoting some crime statistics…? (which of course the Govt itself should be responsible for in the first place) I mean come to think of it the men in Delhi are probably as good or bad as men anywhere else in the world!…and there are pretty much female bartenders everywhere in the world (unless you are talking about the middle east etc. or the Taliban pubs) and so don’t these government's arguments and justifications seem unjustified and infact highly comical to you???

Now as I understood from the article, experts too believe that this sort of argument is silly and defeats all logic and intelligence – and that this is a government which actually can't basically enforce law and order and wants to create a gender division by saying that Delhi men can't hold their drinks…

YOUR THOUGHTS???

Wow that such a law still exists tells you what long ways we still have to go as a society. How about we stop separating jobs based on gender and actually start considering someone's ability to do the job.

Let's crack it one-by-one.

it has been another great day on Jatland with silly, sexist, and even racial banters and god knows how many kinds of ‘education’ on living, speaking, writing, conversing and laughing…

Section 19A of constitution allows everybody "the freedom of thought" ...any kind, at any scale untill it leads 2 sum uproar. Being 'silly' is gud sumtimes (u shud alwyz give sum time 2 d kid inside). being 'sexy' is nt bad either (it leads 2 recreation of human race. ha ha ha). being 'racist' is still an intergral aspect of every human being thou pretending nt 2 b. as long as shiv sena, RSS, fanatic mohammadans and catholics and pagans will b here, it's gonna thrive everywhere. y surds create a ruckas if they r asked 2 get off their turbans? if race or religion is nt an issue, they shud take it easy. wat's d harm in doing in rome wat romans do? mayb u r gonna marry a jat gal only...and education of any sort is nt bad either.

the feminine touch indeed lends grace and elegance to the hospitality industry, which grace and elegance is not inherently suited to the male disposition,’

It's a modern and innovative way of exploiting women. i don't mind getting served by any male/female till it's orderly and pleasing. and i guess many of males also dont mind. it's only an illusion as it has bcum a ritual 2 present woman please males since ages. woman had been serving wine since d times of emperors in their courts. or mayb there is sum inherent notion tht serving is better a job of women as they do at home.

city's men cannot hold their drink, are not mature enough to have pubs and bars with women bartenders and that is why it is unsafe to allow women bartenders in pubs and restaurants!!!…

now d moot question--if women shud b allowed to serve wine or nt? wat bullshit hypocrisy it is? if men cant hold their drinks and are nt mature enuf 2 behave while drinking or drunk, y dsnt govt stop selling alcohol at all? after all who is gonna tell thm 2 behave whn they go home and misbehave wid their wives, if d females r spared 2 serve in bars? either way it's a nature of males. keeping away females frm bars is nt gonna save d problem. and hw abut mumbai bar girls dancing? r men fatherly there? bullshit. such a debate on law is trivial. there is more 2 emancipate woman. HELL, EMPOWER THM. DONT DISCOURAGE THT MEN WILL MISBEHAVE AN AUTO-DRIVER GIRL OR A FEMALE BARTENDER. JUST GIVE THEM TEETH TO BITE BY AMENDING WOMEN PERTAINING LAWS WHICH HOLD SUM WEIGHT. nt all d states hav law to confer girls with equal share in paternal property. still if a divorce/harassment case in pending in court, a woman get 500 bucks as monthly compensation and 1000 if has kids. F... such laws. a woman cant hav share in husband's self-eraner property against his wish, Y? bloody she is called "better half" and despite serving him whole life, she cnt hav sumthing 2 survive on and upbring her kids? all she can claim is ancestrol property...HELL, who inherits empire dese dys?

let girls decide wat profession they wanna choose. dnt dictate us. to hell wid such laws. if they cn bear a drunkard at home, they cn bear thm out as well. infact out, it's gonna b lil safer, at least there they hav guards to protect. F... such laws

Super Shail nice one there to discuss about. Well, the problem is not with females serving alcohol its problem with the men misbehaving at those pubs, bars and restaurants. Some not only misbehave there but at their own homes too. Shame on those gutless bastards. Pubs and Bars have put age restrictions (usually 18) because they consider above 18 a man is thoughtful and considerate enough to behave sensibly and stay in control even after having a couple of shots. Havent heard even a single case like Jessica Lal here, not even misbehaviour. Another point is that if you cant stay in control then you should be drinking at home or in some hole where you cant create any trouble of any sort for anybody but definitely not in public. Why and how can law prohibit women from doing that just because of the negative attitude and behaviour of men!!!… :o

It is the question of the dignity of a damn person.Women had been at recieving ends since ages, partly because of men chauvinism and partly because women could not unite and kick the oppressors. Both are equally to be blamed. However in modern times a part of female fraternity is taking the lead in getting exploited; may be for quick bucks or thrills inspite of the fact that today they are not as helpless.Women has to unite and stand up for the under privileged section of their counterparts themselves and should stop looking at MEN to solve their problems and stop exploiting them because MEN are MEN...they are from MARS and Women from VENUS.

above 18...mature. definitely. bt lemme fragment it mor. i find below 18 and 18+ far mor better thn those 40+ who claim 2 b mature witnessing their grey hair. education and global thoughfulness have changed a lot in youth. i dnt face much trouble from youth but d pre-senior citizen slot. thou ppl say tht youth is stray. i say i m proud of youth--gen y. we r mor responsible and thoughful, excluding few sparse happenings here and there. cheers "RANG DE BASANTI" gang

kaku dis mars and venus rift only is d root of all bias. noooooooooo. just scrap it. we gotta understand that both men and women come in2 being through same biliogical phenomenon. and we have 2 workout here on dis planet only. infact apart frm biological difference (which god made only 2 make it beautiful, there gotta b sum variety), we all have a common being "human". just a small transformation that both are just "human" will solve d centuries-old tassle. differnces r 2 b enjoyed since we complement each other. PLZ LEARN TO COMPLEMENT, NT SUPPLEMENT THAT WOMEN R NUTHING WITHUT US OR MEN R NUTHING WITHUT US. JUST SAY TOGETHER WE ROCK

:)
Section 19A of constitution allows everybody "the freedom of thought" ...being 'sexy' is nt bad either (it leads 2 recreation of human race. ha ha ha)...

Actually the word I used up there was 'sexist'... which as I understand generally means when you are one gender and make jokes/comments/statements about the other gender... ;)
Having said that I am all for being 'sexy' ...Hell! I should know!!!;):D

It's a modern and innovative way of exploiting women...or mayb there is sum inherent notion tht serving is better a job of women as they do at home.

You are forgetting apparently no one was trying to 'exploit' women thru this law....in fact the whole comedy of errors is that the initial misguided idea of the govt was obviously to 'protect' them...(of course we can all see that's quite debatable now!)...and secondly, the move to upturn that ancient law was actually coming from the women groups in the first place; so unless they are now trying to exploit themselves...your guess is as good as mine!
Oh gosh!!! (with a sharp intake of breath), are you (a modern 21st Century woman yourself) trying to say that women 'serve' at home???

now d moot question--if women shud b allowed to serve wine or nt? wat bullshit hypocrisy it is? if men cant hold their drinks and are nt mature enuf 2 behave while drinking or drunk, y dsnt govt stop selling alcohol at all??

Now you are talking...I mean; actually focussing on the initial question for a change!
I agree...It is a hypocrsy any which ever way you look at it!
As to the banning of alcohol, we all know what results when that happens (refer, 'Ban of Liquor in Hayana')...and then girl, really now; the more intriguing question is- why would a government be prejudiced against a certain gender's right to earn a living by 'quoting' crime figures that they (govt) apparently have been unable to quell and are responsible for???

let girls decide wat profession they wanna choose. dnt dictate us. to hell wid such laws... F... such laws

Tsk, tsk....tsk, such language! You need to go refer to the thread on 'Art of Language' as soon as possible...apparently reading some newspapers in the meantime would greatly help too! ;)

Why 'Delhi' in particular?

Wow that such a law still exists tells you what long ways we still have to go as a society. How about we stop separating jobs based on gender and actually start considering someone's ability to do the job.

I personally thought that it was a positive step to try and upturn that ancient law...but the fact that it is now running into heavy weather means exactly like you said; "we have a long way to go as a society!"....The problem is that why Delhi??? I mean Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore etc. etc. seem to be coping with such issues ok....then why the capital is still under such a rut?
Does this call for an entirely new discussion about the society in general in the North regions as versus the rest???.... Who knows....

That's right....Let's crack it one-by-one!!!
:)
ha ha. i m in jiffy, cnt take on all d issues at d moment. gotta sit (****. lol) on dis sum other time 4 d bait-debate. and as far as 'need 2 refer to the thread on art of language' is concerned, i write newspaper and ppl read. and no taboos on f-laden language...section 19A. lol. Rupert Murdoch started dis trend of yellow jouranlism and generality (following general lingo) always helps coz ppl cn relate 2 it. ha ha. circulation ka lafda hai bidu...or u cn think of demana and supply lass...

oops hell i screwed my mind in2 spitting all dis bullshit. lemme b just myself...GIMME A BREAK. DARN!!! I GOTTA GASP FOR SUM RESPITE FROM THT LITERARY ENGLISH HERE AT LEAST. I M HERE 4 FUN, NT 4 SUM EDIT PAGE OPINION. I JUST CHURN MY HEAD IN2 THT EDITORIAL THINGS WHOLE DAY. KITKAT

Vivek, that is a good point (about 'Behaviour') but you know what?... doesn't matter where you are situated or located, how educated you are, or how posh the society is....it has also a lot to do with the local governance, implementation....and restrictions! And to then be able to ENFORCE that effectively!...
The law and order situation would be the SAME anywhere at any given time, if a person was allowed to not only do whatever they wanted but to then get away scott free!

I mean where would we be as a society (anywhere in the world) if there was never the fear of retribution???...

Are the men in Delhi any different to the rest of the parts of India? or the UK or US etc. etc.??? the answer is no...I agree the society plays a big role, but more so does the enforcement of staying in line...
The so called affects of alcohol (of being able to keep it under control or not), behaviour inside the house (marital problems, wife beating and dredges of the society), the age factor (18 or 40; which behaves better) are really the second tier that only then follow that first big 'enforcement' issue, to my mind....

oji affects of alcohol nahi hota hai. it's effects of alcohol. affect is verb (wat effects do consequebtly) and effect is noun. Bt dis u wont make out thru newspapers, plz get urself burried in sum linguistic books of elementary help. good night ji

Okay, so Dahiyaji after reading your response the question really begs asking what is the bigger evil here and whether Women: Are they being exploited by NOT being allowed to pursue a career in the alcoholic beverages service industry, OR they are being exploited by being cajoled into becoming 'servers' in a male dominated bastion!!???!!

Sad State!! Never-ending Debate!

Women should be allowed (no question about that, should be free to choose whatever career they want…) BUT …pay heed, I would make karate classes mandatory in careers like this one for them in case they need to get “amicable” with those inebriated boozed up guests…;) hahaha..:D

Toast to women power....Cheers!..

(Just an afterthought: Gender bias is not something plaguing back home or even, lets say, middle east but actually, sorry to say, its global, in different forms though...well anyway..thats life then. One has to be strong enough to survive, women though have an additional burden (which posItive ones transform onto power?) no matter which part of globe you are from..)
