Alright people…it has been another great day on Jatland with silly, sexist, and even racial banters and god knows how many kinds of ‘education’ on living, speaking, writing, conversing and laughing…
...Top that off with more depressing news of our good ol’ Indian Team being thoroughly and completely THRASHED by England in the first one day cricket international and thy cup of woe is complete!!!…
Alright, alright…so I am not starting another thread on Cricket (I know- it is a boring game, bad for the nation, bad for other sports blah blah blah…) but how about (and in keeping completely in track with the recent spate of women-centric threads) how about we start looking at some of the more comical, quizzically interesting (and entirely REAL) sub-issues that our great Nation manages to throw into the wheel (with a spanner) of life every now and then……???
SO, Let me start with an interesting article I recently came across-
Women To SERVE or NOT TO Serve Alcohol in public Places in DELHI!!!
Okay, a lil’ history first: It started first when sometime last year the High Court in Delhi, overturned a law that banned women from serving alcohol in it’s public places. It was apparently two judges that subsequently ruled that this ancient 1914 legislation was totally unconstitutional, and violated a woman's fundamental right to equality and to choose her own profession (this ruling came as a response to a petition filed by the Hotel Association of India and two women hotel employees), who said the law was damaging their career prospects.
“Since alcohol was served not only in bars but also in restaurants, at banquets and even in hotel rooms, a woman's right to advance her career in the hospitality industry would be severely jeopardized, their ruling said.”
They went on to say (I love this part) in their ruling statement that ‘the feminine touch indeed lends grace and elegance to the hospitality industry, which grace and elegance is not inherently suited to the male disposition,’
Anyways (read with a roll of the eyes), apparently the ruling was welcomed by several aspiring female bartenders as well as India's Hotel Association. Cool…
Alright, fine…everything okay till this point; sure, a silly dinosaur of a law that did not make any sense in these modern times etc…is laudably moved to be revoked/removed.
But then hold on- lo and behold the Indian government then does a quick turn around (and get this) saying that a ban on women serving alcohol should continue because of the negative attitude and behaviour of men!!!… Geezomighty, ‘behaviour’!!?!!
So great!… earlier it was clearly a law prejudiced against women and their rights and now it is very simply also starts infringing onto the Male rights and prejudices against them! Perfect, trust our those 'powers-to-be' to always get it right…
The government argued that Delhi can actually be termed as a ‘Rouge City’ and that the city's men cannot hold their drink, are not mature enough to have pubs and bars with women bartenders and that is why it is unsafe to allow women bartenders in pubs and restaurants!!!…
(And they of course cite for example of the more recent killing of the model Jessica Lal, in 1999 as a case in point. As everyone who follwed that case knows that she was shot dead by a group of men at a restaurant after she allegedly refused to serve them drinks)
THAT in short is the whole story…a story that of course still needs an ending (as the govt is still supposed to do a final ruling on it, eitherways) But now the question really to you dear members is:
Do you think that is a fair statement by a Government to uphold a highly prejudiced law (any which way you look at it) that has been around for 93 long years by quoting some crime statistics…? (which of course the Govt itself should be responsible for in the first place) I mean come to think of it the men in Delhi are probably as good or bad as men anywhere else in the world!…and there are pretty much female bartenders everywhere in the world (unless you are talking about the middle east etc. or the Taliban pubs) and so don’t these government's arguments and justifications seem unjustified and infact highly comical to you???
Now as I understood from the article, experts too believe that this sort of argument is silly and defeats all logic and intelligence – and that this is a government which actually can't basically enforce law and order and wants to create a gender division by saying that Delhi men can't hold their drinks…
YOUR THOUGHTS???
