A story in Times of India dated 27 April 2008

LUCKNOW/NEW DELHI: "Muslims must refrain from cow slaughter, beef eating or trading in cow hide," Islamic seminary Darul-Uloom, Deoband, issued an edict on Friday.

"Meat eaters can opt for buffaloes, goats, chicken and fish. Shariat doesn’t allow beef-eating if it’s prohibited under law," Deoband’s fatwa department head Mufti Habibur Rehman said.

Rehman, fatwa department’s head for more than two decades, issued the fatwa in response to a query by a Muzaffarnagar resident, Haji Mohammad Israr. A small time farmer, Israr, had asked whether Islam permits cow slaughter, trading in cows, bulls and calves and use of its skin for business.

Israr wrote there are many beef eaters in UP and butchers are doing a thriving business despite state government banning cow slaughter.

After a three-member committee looked into the issue, Mufti Rehman said Shariat disallowed anything against law. "Cow slaughter, therefore, was "najayaz" even though Islam allows beef-eating," the fatwa said. It said any act which brings bad name to the community or evokes possibility of imprisonment is "haram" should be avoided.

The fatwa is expected to have wide repercussions as it comes from Saharanpur, the town where the Darul-Uloom is situated. The area has maximum number of Muslim-owned slaughter houses and tanneries.

The Centre banned cow slaughter in 1955. UP issued an ordinance in December 2001 declaring cow slaughter illegal. This was followed by Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act 2002, making the offence punishable by imprisonment from seven to 10 years or a fine upto Rs 10,000.

The community leaders have welcomed the fatwa calling it an important development for the Hindu-Muslim amity. Noted activist Javed Anand said: "Muslims should respect Hindu sentiments and avoid cow slaughter. Influential seminary’s fatwa would go a long way in ensuring this."

Anand said there was nothing new about the fatwa as Muslim leaders have repeatedly sought compliance to the anti-cow slaughter law. "The fatwa should have come earlier, but better late than never. It’s a welcome move," he said.

"The Indian Constitution has given us equal rights including the freedom to religion and it’s important for us to respect it and abide by its cow slaughter prohibition. Muslims around the country should ensure that they abide by the law prohibiting cow slaughter," Rajya Sabha member and Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind general secretary Maulana Mahmood Madani said.

Too many brain washed people on this thread...its almost scary!!!

All animals are part of the food chain. Cow worshippers and other
animal lovers should not try to force their limited, shortsighted viewpoints
on others.

Being a vegetarian is a very nice thing, and if one is a vegetarian, then it is very difficult for him or her to find people rushing towards being non vegetarian and describing its taste as being exquisite ! I m also a pure vegetarian & that is why I also feel a bit uncomfortable when it comes to such appreciation by people.

Vegetarians make me cringe...but I deal with it.
So deal with it. ;)

A little off-topic - I have always wondered that even buffaloes give milk to us but they are never called as Mother as we do for cows..why? Is it just coz they are black and we only want White maa ;)

Also, why buffaloes are rarely seen on the roads while cows can be found anywhere eating the polythenes. Where do they go after there first level of /
Oh right. Just got reminded of the distinction between cow and buffalo.
I never seem to remember that.

Aaaah...so the "white" cow is sacred...but all's fair when it
comes to the kaali gau maata...:D

I don't know yaar i am not a good speaker like all you people even not a good analyzer but still yaar i m saying loudlyyyyyyy i proud being a vegetarian. No one should kill anyone(animal or something) and not alteast for eating yaar.
And after being a jat or hindu you are eating beaf **** yaar i don't have words to say anything.

Mere pyare bhai, yeh Jat ya Hindu hone ka taaz kyun pehnate ho.

Anybody who truly understands and appreciates Hinduism will realise
that we are all part of the same God. We are God! All this creation
and things you see are merely energy flows from one source to another.
Nothing dies and nothing is created.

By eating a cow, you are merely moving energy from one place to another.
In a way, in more human terms, you are paying your respect to the
cow by doing that.

Mere bhole Jat bhaiyon...don't be taken in by the games that
the Bhramins have been playing with us. All this cow worship
and other practices have been conjured by them.

A true Hindu knows better.
Hum logon ko apana hi dharam nahin samanj mein aaya!!! Dukh ki baat toh yeh
hai!

bhai sahab ki FOOD CHAIN pe chutkula yaad aa gaya

duniya gol hai
chuha billi se darta hai
billi kutte se darti hai
kutta aadmi se darta hai
aadmi biwi se darta hai:D

aur biwi chuhe se darti hai....:rock:rock

One of my rajput friend also gives the same excuses...

But if this food chain has been created by god, who are we to alter it...

Pehle aadmi jaanwar khata tha.... par baad me use akal aayi...n he became veggie....ye akal bhi use usi BHAGWAN ne di thi jisne ye FOOD CHAIN banayi....aur wo is food chain cycle se nikal gaya

food chain ka principal yeh ki sabhi species balance rahein...nature me balance rahe...

simply means...ki jyada abaadi wale jaanwar food chain me sabse pehle aate hain...like fish, insects etc...so that inki population jarurat se jyada na ho jae...

uske baad ye chain progress karti hai...lion etc tak jo abaadi me kam hain...

isi ki wajeh se nature me balance rehta hai....:o

isliye aapki FOOD Chain wali baat ka me samarthan karta hu...but me INSAAN ko is food chain ka hissa nahi samajhta...:(

came across this interesting article on internet...

Food expert Francis Moore Lappe, author of the best-selling Diet for a Small Planet, said in a recent television interview that we should look at a piece of steak as a Cadillac. "What I mean", she explained, "...is that we in America are hooked on gas-guzzling automobiles because of the illusion of cheap petroloeum. Likewise, we got hooked on a grain-fed, meat-centred diet because of the illusion of cheap grain."
According to information compliled by the United States Department of Agriculture, over ninety percent of all grain produced in America is used for feeding live stock - cows, pigs, lambs and chickens - that wind up on dinner tables. Yet the process of using grain to produce meat is increadibly wasteful. For example, information from the USDA's Economic Research Service shows that we get back only one pound of beef for every sixteen pounds of grain.

In his book Proteins: Their Chemistry and Politics, Dr. Aaron Altshul notes that in terms of calorie units per acre, a diet of grains, vegetables, and beans will support twenty times more people than a diet of meat. As it stands now, about half the harvested acreage in America is used to feed animals. If the earth's arable land were used primarily for the production of vegetarian foods, the planet could easily support a human population of twenty billion and more.

Facts such as these have led food experts to point out that the world hunger problem is largely illusory. the myth of "overpopulation" should not be used by advocates of abortion to justify the killing of more than fifty million unborn children worldwide each year. Even now, we are already producing enough food for everyone on the planet, but unfortunately it is being allocated inefficiently. In a report submitted to the United Nations World Food Conference (Rome, 1974) Rene Dumont, an agricultural economist at France's National Agricultural Institute, made this judgement,: "The overconsumption of meat by the rich means hunger for the poor. This wasteful agriculture must be changed - by the suppression of feedlots where beef are fattened on grains, and even a massive reduction of beef cattle."

some more interesting facts:-
* A person switching from a typical meat based diet to a purely vegetarian diet would save 5.3 million liters of water yearly.
* Forty percent of the antibiotics used in the US are fed to livestock. No wonder these drugs are becoming ineffective in human disease.

Living Cows Are an Economic Asset

It is quite clear that a living cow yields society more food than a dead one - in the form of a continuing supply of milk, cheese, butter, yogurt and other high-protein foods. In 1971, Stewart Odend'hal of the University of Missouri conducted a detailed study of cows in Bengal and found that far from depriving humans of food, they ate only inedible remains of harvested crops (rice hulls, tops of sugarcane, etc.) and grass. "Basically," he said, "the cattle convert items of little direct human value into products of immediate utility." This should put to rest the myth that people are starving in India because they will not kill their cows. Interestingly enough, India recently seems to have surmounted its food problems, which have always had more to do with occasional severe drought or political upheaval than with sacred cows. A panel of experts at the Agency for International Development, in a statement cited in the Congressional Record for December 2, 1980, concluded, "India produces enough to feed all its people."

If allowed to live, cows produce high quality, protein rich foods in amounts that stagger the imagination. In America, there is a deliberate attempt to limit dairy production; nevertheless, Representative Sam Gibbons of Florida recently reported to Congress that the U.S. government was being forced to stockpile "mountains of butter, cheese, and nonfat dried milk." He told his colleagues, "We currently own about 440 million pounds of butter, 545 million pounds of cheese, and about 765 million pounds of nonfat dried milk." The supply grows by about 45 million pounds each week. In fact, the 10 million cows in American provide so much milk that the government periodically releases millions of pounds of dairy products for free distribution to the poor and hungry. It's abundantly clear that cows (living ones) are one of mankind's most valuable food resources.

Movements to save seals, dolphins, and whales from slaughter are flourishing - so why shouldn't there be a movement to save the cow? From the economic standpoint alone, it would seem to be a sound idea - unless you happen to be a part of the meat industry, which is increasingly worried about the growth of vegetarianism. In June 1977, a major trade magazine, Farm Journal, printed and editorial entitled, "Who Will Defend the Good Name of Beef?" The magazine urged the nation's beef-cattle raisers to chip in $40 million to finance publicity to keep beef consumption and prices sky high.

You're Paying More than You Think for Meat

The meat industry is a powerful economic and political force, and besides spending millions of its own dollars to promote meat-eating, it has also managed to grab an unfair share of our tax dollars. Practically speaking, the meat production process is so wasteful and costly that the industry needs subsidies in order to survive. Most people are unaware of how heavily national governments support the meat industry by outright grants, favorable loan guarantees, and so forth. In 1977, for example, the USDA bought an extra $100 million of surplus beef for school lunch programs. That same year, the governments of Western Europe spent almost a half-billion dollars purchasing the farmers' overproduction of meat and spent additional millions for the cost of storing it.

More tax dollars go down the drain in the form of the millions of dollars the U.S. government spends each year to maintain a nationwide network of inspectors to monitor the little-publicized problem of animal diseases. When diseased animals are destroyed, the government pays the owners an indemnity, For instance, in 1978 the American government paid out $50 million of its citizens' tax money in indemnities for the control of burcellosis, a flulike disease that afflicts cattle and other animals. Under another program, the U.S. government guarantees loans up to $350,000 for meat producers. Other farmers receive guarantees only up to $20,000. A New York Times editorial called this subsidy bill "outrageous," characterizing it as "a scandalous steal out of the public treasury." Also, despite much evidence from government health agencies showing the link between meat-eating and cancer and heart disease, the USDA continues to spend millions promoting meat consumption through its publications and school lunch programs.

Saving Money with a Vegetarian Diet

Although not widely known, grains, beans, and milk products are an excellent source of high-quality protein.

Pound for pound many vegetarian foods are better sources of this essential nutrient than meat. A 100-gram portion of meat contains only 20 grams of protein.(Another fact to consider: meat is more than 50% water by weight.) In comparison, a 100-gram portion of cheese or lentils yields 25 grams of protein, while 100 grams of soybeans yields 34 grams of protein. But although meat provides less protein, it costs much more. A spot check of supermarkets in Los Angeles in August 1983 showed sirloin steak costing $3.89 a pound, while staple ingredients for delicious vegetarian meals averaged less than 50 cents a pound. An eight-ounce container of cottage cheese costing 59 cents provides 60% of the minimum daily requirement of protein. Becoming a vegetarian could potentially save an individual shopper at least several hundred dollars each year, thousands of dollars over the course of a lifetime. The savings to America's consumers as a whole would amount to billions of dollars annually. Considering all this, it's hard to see how anyone could afford not to become a vegetarian.

Try Filet Mignon - its quite good.

Killing of animals is wrong but..

Chahe wo cow ho ya aur koi animal katna, marna to galat hi hai…. Wesye meat khane walo ki population badati ja ri hai to itna koi sochta bi nai hai ki marna chaiye ki nai..aur yeh cow hai ki goat.. aur agar gaay ko nai marna chaiye to pher bakri maie ke bichari maie jaan nai hai ke.. usne bi kyo maro…

Ek bar maine dadaji se poocha ki dadaji cow ko mata kyo kehte hoo… to bole beta pehle kheti karne ke liye baldo ki jarurat hoti thi aur isi se uska roti pani ka jugad hota tha.... pehle jiske jitni jyada gaay hoti na wo hi gaam maie sabse jyada ameer samja jata tha.. isliye gaay ko mata kehne lag gaye…

Aur ab bhai baat gai badal isliye cow ka itna dhyan rakhte nai… aur aaj ghar maie koi bi cow nai rakhna chahta..isliye sab ne jhewde khol diye aur bechari cow ab phire hai galiya maie bhooki tisaai..

Aaj kal cattels log doodh aur chaach ke point of view se hi palte hai…. Ab yeha par bhains ki importance jyada badh gai kyoki bhainsh kam se kam din maie 7-8 kg doodh to de hi deti hai..jabki cow itna na de chahe kitna hi chara lo.. aur cow ke doodh maie bhainsh ke doodh se kam hi ghee niklta hai to yeha bi nuksaan … aur pher ek baat aur bhains saal maie 6-7 mahine doodh to de hi deti hai jabki ek cow 4-5 mahine doodh deke laat maar ke side maie ho le hai…

To bhai ab aise batawo ki koi kyu rakhega ghar maie cow jab use bhainsh mil rehi hai to… kyoki aaj mahangai ka time hai aur logo ki income bi itni ghani na hai.. khal choori ke bi paise lagte hai … ab aisi situation maie koi na sochta ki religion maie cow ko konsa sthan mila hai aur konsa nai…

Aur jab awara phirti gaay bichari bhook se marti kisi ke khet maie ghoos ja hai us time bi ghane hi lath pade hai uske.. us time bi koi na deke hai ki yaa maa hai ki aur kuch..

Isliye ajkal sab kuch insaan ke swarth par hi chalta hai, chahe kitna hi kuch kar lo insaan wehi kam karega jisme uska self interest pura ho reha hoo… politicians aur dharma ke tekedhar gaay ko bachawo bachawo isliye chilate hai ki unko vote chaiye aur kuch na unme kisi ke ghar maie bi gaay na milegi..
Wesye ek interesting baat maine gaam maie note kari hai ki aise to har koi cow ke jab ghar maie awe to laath marenge lakin kai bar uski kadar bi badh ja hai… ek to us time jab koi barhman kabi kuch bata deta hai na ki … 5 din gaay ne ghee maie chupdedi roti diyo thara sankat door hojaga…ya phir tab jab koi tyohaar huwe hai yaa phir lugaiyan koi vrat rakhti hai .. tab to lugaiyan gaam maie doondti phire hai gaay ne… ab yeh hota hai dharm ka darr..

Its plain common sense

So many members have given enough sensible reasons why meat eating is less beneficial to individual and society (nature) as compared to vegetatian diet.
These facts would have been known to our scientifically inclined ancestors since the times of Aryans (7000 BC). Like everything else, thise too were forgotten and what remained was the Brahmins explanation - 'paap lagega'.

Also, for eating meat one has to kill an animal, a more voilent activity than chopping trees. Hence vegetarianism prevents man from imbibing cruel tendencies. One only has to see the slaughtering of 'bakras' through the slow and delibnerately savage process of 'halaal' to realise this aspect.

Therefore, slaughtering of cows for food etc should be discouraged and prohibited, if required. There is nothing religious about it.

if required. There is nothing religious about it.

Nothing is religious.. dharam waram ki sari bate bakwas hai.. phakand hai yeh sab..ppl worship God only to fulfill their selfish wish..koi sharda se yaa bhagwan ko yaad karne ke liye nai karta... Mandiro maie ja ke khade ho jate hath jhod jhod kar aur man hi man saru ho jate hai.. bhagwan mera yeh kardena, bhagwan mera wo kar dena...

religion maie believe ajkal sirf dar ke mare karte hai ...

Let me share an interesting happening here

Ek baar maie gaam ja reha tha to stand par bus maie baita huwa tha.. raste maie ek Ghooshala hai jeha par gaay rakhi jati hai, uske liye ek jana chanda ugha reha tha..buso maie ja ja ke..

Itne maie ek mara huwa sa 4 saal ka ladka bus maie aya ..bhot hi bhooka lag reha tha.. halat aise ho rehi thi ki abi ek aadh ghante maie marne wala hai..agar isko khane ko kuch na mila to.. usne sare passengers se eke k karke bolta reha ki mujhe kuch paise de dhoo khane ke liye lakin paise dene to dhoor usko daant peet ke bus ke niche utar diya.. wo bechara shant sa sab ki taraf dekhta reha… maine phir ek ko pakad ke keha ki are bhai tere ko kuch nai dena to mat de bechare ke maar bi kyo reha hai...and phir use thode kele kharid kar diye ek reddi se…

Itne maie hi wo ghooshala wala bus maie aya aur bolne lag gayaa... baishaak ka mahina hai Gau mata ke naam par apni icha anusaar 10 ka, 20 ka ya 50 ka jitna bi ho sake daan kare.. apni yatra safal banana ke liye… uske itna sa kehane par hi sare passengers ne .. phataphat jaib se 10-10 rupiye nikal kar us kasam ko dene lag gaye… maie dekhta hi reh gaya ki kya soch hai in logo ki … kitne religious ban rehe hai ab to aur abi abi us ek chote se bache ke liye ek rupiya nai nikla inki jaib se… .. sochne lag gaya ki kya mast hindu dharma hai aur iske followers to aur bi mahan hai…

I second ur point Sid Bhai word by word! Very well explained indeed! :)

I am not speaking for OR against beef porduction and consumption. All i want to say is that prohibition by government never works. If you ban beef, the muslims, christians, sikhs and other people who eat beef will find other ways to get to it - it will cost more and will be another cash cow (sic) for the police and other enforcement agencies - which will also lead to harassment of citizens by these agencies.

Ban on liquor never worked in the past.

I also donot understand why you would impose your religious commitment on people of other religions. Unless these people are slaughtering cattle in front of your eyes or on your personal property or place of worship - I don't think you have the right to curtail their eating habits. What if the Muslims started a movement in India to ban pork?? to ban alcohol?? to ban interest being charged by banks (any bank employees here care to comment??) or you getting interest from the bank (I think everybody here would be pis*ed)?? What if they said that all women should wear burqas (would jatnis here oblige?)

All this would be unfair - would it not be?

Fairness is in short supply in the Indian psyche - whether it be Hindu, Muslim, Christian or otherwise ................ everybody wants to jump the line, jump the gun and everything else they can jump and get around - just because they donot like it. I wish they would jump the BS.
