Kya Naam Diya Jaye?

My dear Mukesh, meri samajh mei nahin aa raha ki iss policy shift ke barre mei kya kahoon...kuchh samajh nahin aa raha? Isse MAUKAPRESTHI kahun ya PRINCIPLES KE SAATH SAMJHOTA ya phir CHADHHTE SURAJ KO SALAAM KARNE WALI DUNIYADARI wali kahani? Chalo jo bhi hei theek hei.Wishing India all the best!

India did the right thing. What would India gain in supporting Iran except hitting herself. Let us not forget that Iran supported Pakistan during all major wars. Iran and India came somewhat closer only on Afghanistan's issue. Only thing India has with Iran is the oil and gas interest. If one has to chose just because of financial reasons, then we need US and Europe more than Iran. Thank God at last India is learning to go by her intersts and not just for the sake of opposing USA. Let us not forget that even Russia and China did not support Iran. Abstaining from voting can not be called support. Well done India.

Rajendra ji,

Results of these kinda decisions will take lots of time to come out as the net output will depend on the consequences in long run and hence taking a pre-determined, absolute position [as to whether India did right or wrong] may not be a correct judgement in all possible humility at one's disposal. If we start discussing Indian relations of past with Iran vis-a-vis USA, so many wise caps may have to apply quick fix. Not withstanding the forgoings, If we want to progress without dignity and certain fundamental principles [as a largest democracy] of JUST EXISTENCE then you and INDIA both are right. Go India Go!

Dahiya Ji,

During 50s India adopted the high moral non alignment policy and we all know how we were used like a ball by both the groups. Pakistan used very sucessfully both USA and China and the Muslim world to its advantage at all the international fora. Though India has supported Palestine cause all along, but most muslim nations sided always with pakistan when the final moment came. If past is any indicator, our foreign policy has failed totally. Countries like China have been really smart to milk both USA and Russia and use Pakistan. India has never acted in its national interests and rather took high sounding moralistic approach. The very Africal nations whom we always supported have almost stood against India's UNSC seat. Sacrificing one's immediate interests in favour of illusive long term interests is nothing but stupidity. In world politics there is nothing like long term. Things change there like stock market on an hourly basis. Fact of the matter is that one can not take for granted any country in long term. Its only our strength which matters in long term and nothing else. There are no friends and foes in international diplomacy. As of now and in foreseable future it pays to be with USA and Europe. Once we become strong, may be we can play more assertive role. Ground realty is that no muslim nation will stand by India in hour of need, be it Bngladesh or even Afghanistan. At best we have only tradew relations with them..or may be some sort of divide and rule..

Rajendra ji,

While i agree with most of what you brought out here, pardon my reservation about your stance regarding long term VS Short term policy decisions. If that was so then US could not have been there, where it is today. Long term view called foresight is very important ingredient of any policy decision, specially when one frames foriegn policy of a sovereign state.

Thats right. this is why India should play her shots in every side of field because playing straight forward shot everytime may not be good. We must need to define our foriegn policy according to our interests.

But I think left parties are not able to digest this step :-

My dear Mukesh,I find nothing wrong in Left"s opposition to the blatent and abrupt shift in the stand India had been taking on the issue. It may backfire on India in long run and This Ghost may haunt us for long-2 time.It is indeed a short-sighted attitude on the part of INDIA.Whatever one might say, Iran and India enjoyed excellent relations since ages and as such we needed to respect that too, even if we found it more beneficial in changing the court in search of a fair weather.Kindly participate in the discussion with your logic if any to substantiate the facts and figures you put across, instead of just agreeing and disagreeing, which only helps in making blocs. I expect more inputs from you in future, more so when you happen to be the originator of the very THREAD in question. Hope you don't feel bad?

I really dont know what to say on this one. I have mixed emotions. Being a Libertarian, I think that the best foreign policy is to not to have one. Trade with whoever gives you the best payoff. I think India should have abstained. By voting against Iran, India looks like brown-nosing Washington, which doesnt look too neat to me. Just like China and Russia, we should have abstained.

US is hell bent on toppling Tehran, not for its own gains but for Israel. Whatever their reasons, I dont think they have nay nobel intentions for now. But one thing is for sure, US cannot afford one more war now. So, I do not know if this would result in military actions.

The western countries set up all these organizations like UN, NATO, IAEA to enhance their own personal nad selfish agendas and propoganda. This gives their agressive action against weaker rivals, a stamp of international approval.

My opinion: India shouldnt even be part of any of these world mafias like UN, WB, and IAEA. We do not need to kiss-ass other countries to make something of ourselves. Be something of our own.

I can see that most of you seem to be supporting the action, becuase Iran is a muslim nation. One more reason I threw my religion in the trashcan, becuase it fills me with bias and prejudice, as I end up hating others who are different from me.

Hi all,
well i see it as a positive sign in indian diplomacy. Now we can
take strong decisions. What i see is as the govts in centre being
multyparty...they avoid taking strong decisions. To keep mum & let
it go as it is ...being their mantra.
We should back this decision fully so that our Govt can take
some more bold & clear decisions.
I consider Parvez Musharraf as a very good decision maker.
As he's steering his countries diplomacy is worth appreciating.
We need such diplomats in our system who only keep national intrest
over each & every other thing.
Nittin

How Is It A Strong/bold Decision And ?????prez

Nitin bhai, what is so strong about this decision by so called strong and bold govt & bhai how could MUSHARRAF be called a wonderful leader in any sense of things? What you think has he achieved worth mentioning for Pakistan? I would like to hear from you in details....Will you please? Thanx.

Ha Dahiya Ji,
You Just Sit & compare pakistan before 9/11 sept & now.
At that time pakistan was very weak economically....law & order
was at worst....then on americas call musharraf went with him
without caring for religious sentiments there. He got a lot of money
& praise frm world & cut indias role in all that reconstruction.
now economy there is quiet better....system functionnung well..
key ally in war of terror(being a source of terror for india & afgan)
looking in eyes of india.
Recently in a report of an international body....pakistan was
lot more safer & favourable place for investor than india.even
bhutan stands over india......how ironical.
India considered Tibbetts problem its own & lost a lot in 1962
to china....now you want to favour Iran.
Diplomacy is quite different of politics...& our leaders are
good politicians but not good diplomats.
I sometime think Democracy without moral values is a failure.
IF MAJORITY GOES FOR A WRONG DECISION THEN WHAT????
Which country can b considered friend to india?? name a single one
Nepal???Bangladesh????Sri Lanka?????Russia(Keeping in mind
recent KGB files)
so whats wrong with America....at least he doesnt do backbiting.
Regarding Musharraf he has done miracles for pakistan.
Look at size & potential of pakistan & then ours.....then
who's to blame.....only our leadership & diplomacy.
This conversation through postings is slower....so fix a time
& all intrested can meet up in chopal....

Nothing has changed in pakistan

Dear Nitin, There is hardly any change in pakistan since 9/11. If you see the statistics of favourite investment destinations, you will be surprised to see India in the top most list of world's largest economies and Pakistan stands no where and there is hardly any qualatative internal changes in pakistan in last few years.Irrespective of drawbacks and deficiencies, India is any day a much respected country of the world and comparing India with the likes of Bhutan and Nepal is not fair. Have a look at the today's statement of Musaraf.......Which speaks volumes of what has Pakistan gained from world community. I am not at all against INdia's close relations with US.....why not the relations with US have to be top class but what we started discussing was not INDO-US relations but a particular decision of India where we saw a clear shift in the stand India had been taking in last 58 years or so. Any way thank you for your inputs dear.It was nice knowing your thought process. God speed!

My regards

Fully agree that long term vision is very important. I wonder if India ever had any long term vision at all during last 1000 years. Had she had a vision, we would not have been enslved by every possible race on the Earth. If British ruled us in the past, Iranians were no better. Nadir Saha and many of his cousins invaded us and looted us. If one fails in short term, he/ she will never see long term...Moral of the story is that let India succeed in short term first to think of long term..In short term India should come out of ICU and only then in long term she can talk of winning medals in race..There are no long term friends in international politics or trade..

What would have India gained by abstaining? Kicks from both sides ? May be China and Russia are strong enough to abstain, not India. India must play active roles for 20-30 years and only then she can think of becoming a strong nation. Those who walk in the middle of road, are hit from both sides.. We are not supporting India's action just because Iran is a Muslim nation. We are supporting it because its in India's interest. In diplomacy there is no final action. One has to review actions on hourly basis. Is 1000 years slavery not enough to learn for India? Did any nation come to our rescue ever when the time came?

Rajendra ji, who says that we should move in the middle of the road....let us move in our lane [as per our destination]. These days lanes are clearly de-markated and if still one commits mistakes then Accidents will happen. Rahi baat standing ki...to India ko assert karna hei to apne bal-boote par hi karna padega. I wonder when will we start recognising our worth?Unless we find ourselves worth our salt, no other nation is going to treat us well.......Khoodi ko kar buland................................[You heard that for sure]. While we discuss this topic, importance of good Indo-US relations is known to us.

Is this we call idependent policy??

It is evident That India's vote to refer Iran's issue to UN security council is under US pressure. It may not be so but it appears to be.Has India's so called non-proliferation concerns been so strong, it would have it self signed the NPT at least after exploading the nuclear devices in 1998. Such an action might have prevented pakistan from following us and further distributing the nuclear know-how to countrieslike iran and noth korea. India had the objection at that time that NPT was discriminatory, that objection remains valid even today.
India, who herself gate crashed into the exclusive nuclear club after pokhran 2 and was shunned with lot of sanctions and atmost treated as outcaste, today advices Iran to stop its PEACEFUL nuclear programme.what a irony?
one thing is sure out come of all this. India's dream of gas pipeline through iran and pakistan has been shattered. I am sure the foreign policy makers will explain to rest of the country in more diplomatic way so that it can be digested well.is this we call INDEPENDENT foreign policy?
In my viewsit would have been better for india to abstained from voting as done by china and russia as suggested by many members rather then singing the song on US tunes.

1. First of all, the pipeline has never been an Indioan dream. This has been rather Iranian dream and Pakistani dream. Pakistan ears millions of dollars in royality and Iran earns money from gas which otherwise goes into air as waste. Selling gas is not as easy as oil. Just wait and watch..Iran will still sell gas to India as it has no other big buyer. Pakistanis will do their best to see the piple line, else they too loose millions.

2. Whom had we impressed by abstaining? Who would have cared ? India has been voting against USA for 50 years. Has that made India strong or independednt in foeign policy? High time we wake up to world reality. Hope being a man from army you know how Iran supported Pakistan during most of the Indo-Pak wars.
