Is “Tuition” Necessary for Junior Classes?

It is not an issue so far as school education is concerned. Poverty did exist even during the Mughal period when 95% of Indian population was literate. "Poverty" is a concept given by Western economics. There is no definition of poverty - even a millionaire is "poor" compared to billionaires !
.

95% literacy during, WOW! I guess Akbar was amongst the rest of five percent, manne to lage se 100% literate the Akbar ne chhod ke.

All these dialects without script (now don't tell me there were scripts but brahman and banie took it out of system) around us suggest clearly that the literacy was minimal in India ever since. Even Gurmukh script was manufactured by the second guru.

problem is not tutoring ..

Problem in getting kids in good school is not a problem just in India, its just about all over world, private or public. The world is so competitive now that you have to get extra time for your kids by a professional and I don't see any harm in doing that compared to half baked/educated moms trying their hands on the kids' home work or worse, kids have nobody to help them at home because parents are busy due to all the good reasons.

Let me ask you all, how many of you really don't beleive in tuition thing to the level that you yourself don't allow tuition to your kids?

i do not support this method .... dont know about the rest of world but in india the major problem is quality education and the theoritical education system is quite good ... we as a nation have allready done quite well on this front ... with whatever little resources we had ..

but on front of morales, civic sense and many many such social platforms the larger part of our community fails substantially ... educated / un educated - dosent matter ...

if given a chance i would choose to make kids more sensible , would try and develop their common sense instead of feeding the the NCERT syllabus in their unreciptive brains and i do belive in this as you dont need to hold all possible degrres just to do good in life ....

and like you mentioned in your post --- half baked moms - in this classic exapmle if these so called moms decide to "EDUCATE" their kids in the right way ... it can do wonders for future india

Friends, I think initially tution was only meant for those whose parents could not help them for various reasons. But these days it has become a fashion to send students to tution classes. Even those who have enough time also send their wards to tution classes to fight the cutthroat competition. Its only because of their herd mentality which makes this dhandha flourish in each and every town. Even it has penetrated to the village level. People who themselve can not clear any competitive exam start coaching others, it has become a trend - Graduation/PG karo aur naukri nahi lagi to start giving tutions. Aur to kuch nahi is herd mentality ke chalte garib aadmi ki kamar toot rahi hai jo sochta hai ki sayad tution bhejne se uske bacchhee bhi kamyaab ho jayenge.

But I think that this tution culture kills creativity and innovations.

Those government teachers who give tutions also dont focus on teaching at school and encourage students to attend their tution classes and threaten them to fail if they dont do the same.

Pata nahi is gorakhdhandhe ka kya hoga.

Without going into details, I may mention that I have spent several years of my career in USA and many years in Europe too – and I have noticed that a 12th-class student of USA or Canada proves to be a more responsible citizen than his Indian counterpart. He may not be as brilliant at mathematics compared to an Indian who was forced to learn complex maths, trignometry and advanced algebra at his tender age, despite his taste and interest. In the West, such subjects are taught at Higher classes, rather than at middle classes as is the case in India. A school student in the US or Canada has more knowledge about his own country, its road-maps, locations and geography, system of government, basic facts about its armed forces and so on. He is also not forced to read English poetry of William Wordsworth or Shakespearean plays in his school syllabus which gives more stress on basic sciences and general knowledge. On the other hand, immediately on passing 12th grade, the Indian student suddenly finds his feet in deep water and a dark future ahead – he feels ashamed even after attaining 90% marks. Where is our young generation heading for?

The fact remains that in the West, primary school kids do not need tuition after school hours.

These included the suggestion that just over one in four (27%) children were being privately tutored. E-mails to the BBC's news website suggested people were paying between £15 and £25 a session.
FOR ONE HOUR RS 2000..............

Extracts from Lord Macaulay's speech in British Parliament on 2nd February 1835 are quoted below

“I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such calibre that I do not think that we would ever conquer this country unless we break the very backbone of this nation which is her spiritual and cultural heritage. Therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture. For, if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native culture – and they will become what we want them – a truly dominated nation.”

Macaulay said this in 19th Century - how prosperious was India, both financially and literacy-wise, can be gauged from this statement of a Britisher.

Though Mughal period lasted till 1857, the peak period of this dynasty could be just 200 years, till the death of Auranzeb in 1707. "Literate" is he who knows how to read and write, we are not talking of advanced learning. In today's context, our government counts a person as "literate" who can write his name - that's it.

"Wonder that was India" - the book written by A.L. Basham (who was a Reader in the History Department of the University of London) mentions the status of literary in India to the tune of 90-95% even during Mughal period. This book was published in 1954 by Macmillan Co., New York, and is available in most libraries.

Sorry - it may not be 100% true but it is not 100% false either. BBC Link is not working and the youtube video is portraying weak GK of stupid grown-up Americans. This thread is about forced tuition for young kids, not for grown-up university students who must get extra tuitions. In Indian context, the process is in reverse-gear - young kids are overburdened with fat syllabus and tuition after school hours - whereas the university guys hesitate even to attend their regular classes !

Education and Literacy

Sometimes we combine the definitions of Education and Literacy and use tham in place of each other.

Definition of Education "Over all personality Development of an Individual" which has a great elaborated meaning.

Literacy mean " An individual recognise words and knows how to write"

There is a compiled data of literate individuals in India but there is no statistics of Educated people and no measure for level of Education.

A child learns from the surrounding as well as school environment, School has a broad meaning. Tution is for boosting certain knowledge aspects with the help of a person in a closed environment. There the mind of student doesn't develop.

But now a days as the teacher don't know the meaning of education and under the process of performance, in private school they adopt only craming techiques and even force the students to cram in the recess period and in the morning session and no time for Play class. So the learning capacity always goes down for a student in these circumstance and parents only adopt the techniques for hiring a private tutor.

Also now a days when both parents are working they take the help of tutor just to engage there child for a while.

Some do it for fashion. But the true fact is that give your child the proper environment at home and at school and they will develop of there own. just be a bit vigilant to guide him properly to put him on track and to focus.
