Sant Garib Das (संत गरीब दास) (1717-1778)

Sant Garib Das (संत गरीब दास) (1717-1778) was noted for his piety and poetry. He was a deeply religious person concerned about the welfare of ignorant people. He started Gribdasi sect and composed 'Garib Das ki granth Sahib'.

Early life

According to Glossary of the Tribes and Castes of the Punjab and North West Frontier Province By H. A. Rose, Garib Das was from a well known family of Dhankar Jats, now resident in Chhudani (छुडाणी), a village of tahsil Jhajjar, which had migrated shortly before his birth Karauntha in Rohtak tahsil. He was born in samvat 1774 (1717 AD) and was noted for his piety and poetry. [1]

Founder Garibdasi Sect

H. A. Rose writes that H. A. Rose himself, illiterate, he dictated, when 23 years old, a book now known as 'Baba Garib Dasji ki Pustak', or 'Garib Das ki granth Sahib', which consists of some 7000 verses of the celebrated Kabir, followed by 17000 of his own. He died in samvat 1835 (1778 AD), and over his remains a samadhi was erected. [2]

It is a tenet of the sect that Kabir and Ram are identical-Ram men kabir men kuchh antar nahin. Garibdasis are found in Punjab as well in Rohtak, there are branch institutions in a number of villages in Rohtak district. [3]

Great Guru Shri Satguru Garib Dass Ji took birth at Chhudani, Distt. Jhajjar in Haryana (India) on 1717 A.D. Acharya Garib Dass felt, from his childhood, a passionate yearning for the vision of God. In various ways he tasted the bliss of communion with God, sometimes merging himself totally with creator. Jagat Guru Garib Dass Maharaj adopted Maharaj Kabir Ji as his Guru and thus religious lineage of Garib Dassi Sect is connected with Kabir Ji through Acharya Ramanuj. Acharya Garib Dass Ji had extra ordinary vision right from the birth and people could feel that this boy will lead the world from utter darkness to spiritual enlightenment. He was a deeply religious person concerned about the welfare of ignorant people. He preached that God has many names. So has he numerous qualities and attributes. He did not give up the rich heritage of Indian Philosophy. He gave a fine and hog order Gurbani which laid stress on rightful living, compiled as Guru Granth which has become a beacon of light for the direction less society today. [4]

Sri Garib Das : Haryana's Saint of Humanity

K.C. Gupta has written a book on Garib Das under the title - Sri Garib Das : Haryana's Saint of Humanity. [5] We are producing some content from this book in this section. Garib Das of Rohtak District founder of the Garib Dasi sect, writes Dr. Mohan Singh,

"May be considered as the last of the Hindu Raj Yogis and Bhakta poets who had as great a mastery of popular poetic language and style as Ghulam Farid had, but whose knowledge of other Indian languages was greater than that of any other poet of medieval India, the only poet who comes near to him being Shah Qayam Din Chisti of Kari Goan in Bombay".

His padas, according to Dr. Ram Kumar Verma, exceed 17,000. According to Swami Chetan Das the total number of his padas is about 18,500. No other saint poet of medieval India has written in such abundance and on so many facets of spiritual life.

Shri Garib Das was a true saint in he sense that the never tried to win favour of kings and rulers. He never sought the patronage of any court. During his life time, many invasions and upheavals took place. One king after another was toppled. But we do not find a single reference to events to which he was almost an eye witness.

This is the first authentic and critical work, ever published, on the life and works of Sri Garib Das. The author, Dr. K.C. Gupta, was attracted towards Garib Das when he attended some satsangas in the company of his father who was a great devotee of the Saint. His literary interest in the writings of Garib Das was aroused after he had passed his M.A. in Punjabi from the Punjab University in the year 1951.

This book discusses in depth and detail not only the mysticism and philosophy of Garib Das but also his language and poetry in all their richness and range. Chapters on the broad stream of the Bhakti movement and the social and political conditions of Garib Das' life-time, place the saint in a proper spiritual as well as historical context.

The sadh sect

The sadh sect was founded by one Birbhan some 200 years ago. The Sadh do not smoke, and effect great personal cleanliness, and their religious ceremony consist in eating together. It is a sect rather than an order, and Jats of a large village in Karnal are sadhs by sect, though Jats by caste. [6] According to Maclagan the sect was founded by one Udo Das, one of the pupils of Rai Das. Sir James Douie's account of sect runs: They own the whole of one village Zainpur Sadhan, and half of another in paragana Indri, and a few families are to be found in tahsil Piplli of Ambala. They are said to be found also in Rohtak, to own two villages in Saharanpur and to...[7]

Bigga Ji Jakhar (1301 - 1336)

Bigga Ji Jakhar (1301 - 1336) is a folk-deity of Jangladesh area of Rajasthan. He was a Jat ruler of Jakhar gotra. He was born in year 1301 AD at place called Riri, which was capital of Jakhars. His father was Rao Mahun ji and mother was Sultani of Godara clan. He was a great warrior and killed in protecting cows in the year 1336.

Gathering at Chandigarh

With a large number of defence officers having put up in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, social get-togethers of retired officers of various regiments and corps are a common feature here. This is an occasion when veterans reminisce about their heydays of soldiering. Women also don’t lag in recalling the emotional moments when, during the days of war, they lived together as one family in cantonments. One such get-together of the Jat Regiment was held over lunch at the Shivalik Officers Institute in Chandi Mandir on 7 September 2002. That a veteran of 86 years, Lt-Col Akhe Ram ( a soldier-turned-business tycoon) came all the way from Panipat to attend this regimental function shows his zeal for camaraderie. Col Akhe Ram joined the Army in 1936 and was commissioned into 3 Jat in May 1941. He commanded two famous battalions i.e. 1 Jat (LI) and 2 Jat (Mooltan), and was awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) as a captain. [3]

He was also Mentioned in Despatches twice. Besides, he is a recipient of "Rattna Shiromani" award for earning substantial foreign exchange for the country. He has also been given "Vijay Shree" award for his service to mankind. [4]

Akhir kaise banega in bahadur jaton ka Itihas ?

http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26144

If anyone fought for the british by joining their armed forces, served under them, fought their wars when India was under the rule of British, how can they be great in that sense only? British had equated Indians with dogs. Remember the signs saying "dogs and Indians are not allowed" and other signs when India was a british colony? people like chandrasekhar Azad, bhagat singh were the ones who were great. That is my opinion.

Col Akhe Ram

Dear Aman

Col. Ram's was a very significant achievement. To rise from being a simple village kid to full Colonel was not a joke.

Due to people like him, future generations of Jats from the villages got a new outlook, education for their children, and new opportunities.

He served as a role model, an example to follow.

Azad, Bhagat Singh, Subash Chandra Bose had their role, so did people like Col. Ram.

Because of people like him, the Indian Army emerged from WWII, as one the finest and strongest armies in the world.

Having fought for freedom of England from Europe to Burma, they would settle for nothing less than the freedom of motherland- Bharat.

The British did not leave because of Gandhi and Nehru, they left because they did not want to face people like Col Akhe Ram, and his battle hardened troops.

Let us not belittle their memories.

Let us honour them!

Dear Amanji,

Col Akhe Ram fought for the British was his duty and he did it bravely. It is now our duty to honour such heroes.

Can some body provide info about his Village, Gotra, Childhood and other information about his success ?

Regards,

Nothing personal, but an Indian serving his colonial master, fighting his master's wars is nothing to be proud of. It is strange reasoning that British were afraid to face "battle hardened Indian troops working for them." As if that would have happened. Didn't Indian troops under General Reginald Dyer fired at unarmed Indains, their own brethern demonstrators in Jallianwalah bagh? British used Indian troops to fight their foreign wars, serve their interests and control and put down revolts by the Indians in India. What a clever strategy! It were the 2 World wars, specially the second World war that took wind out of British sails for they found it almost impossible to hold on to their colonies. Perhaps we can thank Hitler for playing an indirect part in getting India independent for it was he who broke the back of the British.

Dear Aman

The background is that the British were ruling India, and had been doing so for over 200 years prior. They were the world superpower.

The entire population was subservient to them, and the majority was active collaborators.

The British Second World War effort was supported by the majority of the world, to protect freedom and democracy form the tyranny and dictatorship of the Nazi philosophy, and the Japanese dictatorship which allied itself with the Nazis

Jats who fought alongside the British did not do so, to support the British in
The dreams of a Colonial Empire, they did so to gain freedom for their motherland.

If Hitler and the Japanese had won, they would simply have enslaved the Indians, and exploited them for their own ends as they did, any of the people they conquered.

The British at the time were the lesser evil.

Like it or not, this was a peaceful transition to Independence.

The violence that occurred was doer to the mischief created by the British. supporting the Muslim league and the creation of Pakistan.

One then wonders what exactly is the need to single out one Jat of humble beginnings, a simple farmer’s son, as the culprit for all the misdeeds of all the Indians, who ran the civil service became Judges, enforced British law, became teachers, engineers who built the railways, dams, and canals, prison, where Indians, were jailed, or who collaborated with the British to exploit and push further into poverty those Indians who simply were looking for a way out etc etc.

People like Sit Chotu Ram, Col Akhe Ram, and other showed the path the freedom, and guided the community to a better future.

Because of people like them many of us are where we are today.

Let us honour what they did

Could I suggest with some humility that we should all read up a bit more on the historical background, and not rush to form opinions?

Dear Ravi Chaudhary STOP. you have a roundabout way of nonsensical reasoning to justify servitude of the British colonial masters. If every Indian male or female instead of serving the master British and enforcing their rule by keeping other Indians in line became like Bhagat singh, Azad, British would have been long gone before 1947. Are you happy now that I am not singling out 1 person. Are you satified that there is no conspiracy? Indian army is great? Get a grip on reality, It took 3 days for the so called mighty Indian army to eliminate a couple of terrorists armed only with small firearms in mumbai. Indian military imports most of it weaponary from russia and israel. Is that sign of greatness?

You want me to make up sweet lies glorifying the world wide exploits of Indian army? Would that soothe you? India has to seek permission from USA and Britain on how to deal with Pakistan! What does that say about Indian army or Indian military capability? While Israel can go about doing what is right for them unopposed. India and Pakistan cannot even fight a war for more than 2 weeks. While so called battle hardened Iraqi army which fought Iran for 8 years, the world's 4 or 5th largest army at that time crumbled in face of high tech assault by US and allies in a matter of weeks..
Should it take 3 days to flush out a couple of terrorists? Bungled in front of the whole world..commandoes without proper equipment? defective flak jackets for cops? world war 1 enfield rifles for mumbai cops? Incompetence and corruption...

commenting on something is the easiest job, r u a media manager of US Army, what should have been the reaction if Israel and US commandos were asked to handle the case. and how can u compare India with US and others, we have our own capabilities, problems. siting in US and asking these funny question can not solve the problems.
